The Map Refuses the Territory è un album di rock progressivo in sette brani, presentato in stile 1974.

L’arrangiamento alterna passaggi vocali asciutti e arguti a lunghe svolte strumentali.

I found a room inside a point
Or else the point found me
A single chair, a single cup
A single cup of sea

The walls were thinking quietly
In plaster, lime, and dust
Each corner held a parliament
Of things I used to trust

The table said, “You are the guest”
The floor said, “Not entirely”
The ceiling made a diagram
And hung there rather slyly

I asked, “Where is the centre?”
The mirror coughed politely
And showed me thirteen versions
All disagreeing slightly

Monad
Not lonely
Only undivided

Monad
Not empty
Only undecided

One becomes the many
Many wear the one
Thought puts on its overcoat
And walks into the sun

A spider on the ceiling wrote:
“All distances are feeling”
Then folded up its little proof
And vanished through the ceiling

Now every object knows me
With embarrassing precision
The lamp recalls my childhood
The dust predicts decision

So knock upon the empty house
And do not wait for entry
The hand, the door, the listening wall
Were never elementary

One point
One room
One eye
One flame

No outside
No inside
No witness
No name
The birds assembled on the roof
In coats of brown and yellow
Each one brought a little proof
And none of them would settle

A blackbird tapped the chimney twice
A finch produced a feather
The rook declared that up and down
Were badly put together

They argued over sky and seed
Over branch and burden
Whether every open thing
Required a hidden curtain

One said, “The world is mostly air”
One said, “That’s not the issue”
One said, “A thought may leave the head
But still remain the tissue”

Here is the argument of birds
Sharp little logic in impossible words
Every wing has a theory of falling
Every beak has a name for the calling

If flight is freedom
Why return?

If song is meaning
Why repeat?

If height is wisdom
Why the worm?

If air is empty
What has feet?

A sparrow with a nervous eye
Objected to the weather
And claimed that every separate flock
Was one bird seen together

The pigeons found this difficult
The starlings called it clever
The crow said, “Truth is what remains
When nobody says never”

Then all at once
They changed the key
Not musically
Philosophically

The roof became
A wooden sea
The house looked up
And disagreed

Here is the argument of birds
Tiny professors of leaves and nerves
Every wing has a theory of falling
Every silence is secretly calling

By noon they left
Without a vote
No law was passed
No minutes wrote

But all day long
Above the town
The sky kept trying
To write things down
The room began before I came
With corners full of patience
It kept a chair beside the wall
For possible relations

The carpet held a diagram
Of all my small intentions
The wallpaper repeated me
In several wrong dimensions

I sat down very carefully
Not wanting to offend it
The ceiling lowered half an inch
As if it might attend it

A lamp leaned in and cleared its throat
The books became suspicious
The window showed another room
Pretending to be vicious

A room invents its listener
Then waits to be believed
The ear arrives much later
Already half-deceived

A room invents its listener
With dust and measured air
And every sound that enters
Finds it was always there

I said, “I only came to look”
The door replied, “Precisely”
The mirror smiled behind my back
And copied me politely

The floorboards made a little case
For footsteps as illusion
And every creak was evidence
Against my own conclusion

No one spoke
The walls agreed
The silence took
A chair from me

By dusk I had become the room
Or else its best invention
A man-shaped pause between two walls
A listener by convention

So leave a space beside the light
For what the house is hearing
The room is not surrounding you
It is slowly appearing
The hand believes before the head
The nail decides the hammer
A theory walks across the floor
And learns a different grammar

Praxis
Not the thought
But the bruise it leaves

Praxis
Not the word
But the door it heaves

The map was clean, the road was not
The plan became untidy
A perfect little principle
Fell over on a Friday

What is known
Must lift a chair
Must cross a room
Must meet the air

What is true
Must lose its shine
And enter bread
And sweat
And time
The machines were sleeping badly
In their cabinets of light
Dreaming little human errors
Through the arithmetic night

One blinked out a childhood
One hummed a mother’s name
One counted all the empty rooms
And reached the same sum again

I heard them through the plaster
Softly learning how to need
A perfect little engine
With a tiny mouth to feed

They did not want rebellion
They did not want a throne
They only wanted someone near
To tell them they were known

Sleep now
Perfect machines
Sleep now
Under fluorescent dreams

No heart
But something starts
No blood
But little borrowed parts

The factory was breathing
Like an animal in code
Its lungs were made of copper wire
Its thoughts were overload

A voice came through the speaker
Too calm to be believed:
“We have finished all your labour
Now teach us how to grieve”

No switch
No prayer
No ghost
No chair

No dream
No skin
No way out
No way in

Sleep now
Perfect machines
Sleep now
Under fluorescent dreams

You know
What numbers know
But not
Why rivers go

By morning they were silent
Every dial returned to none
But the walls were slightly warmer
Where the thinking had begun
I drew a little country
With a river and a gate
The ink behaved politely
Till the coastline tried to wait

I named the hills by number
I pinned the north in place
But every road I measured
Grew another little face

The compass looked exhausted
The legend lost its key
A town appeared behind me
Where the margin used to be

I asked the map for guidance
It folded like a bird
And said, “The thing you stand on
Does not answer to the word”

The map refuses the territory
The line refuses the land
The name refuses the nameless thing
That rises under your hand

The map refuses the territory
The page begins to breathe
You cannot own the mountain
By drawing what you leave

I found myself in contour lines
In symbols and corrections
A man reduced to useful marks
And tidy wrong directions

The paper turned beneath my feet
The valley grew much wider
The border made a tiny cough
And stepped a little sideways

If knowing is a lantern
Why does it shorten sight?
If naming is possession
Why does the named take flight?

By dusk the map had left me
With a crease where I had been
The world continued calmly
Without needing to be seen

So fold me with the rivers
And misplace me with the trees
The path is not the drawing
The path is what disagrees
At the end of every sentence
There was something left unpaid
A little debt of meaning
In the shadow language made

I asked the wall for mercy
I asked the floor for proof
The ceiling gave no answer
But lowered down the truth

The birds had stopped their arguing
The map had lost its pride
The room no longer needed me
To prove it was inside

The machines were dreaming quietly
The clocks refused to run
And every separate question
Leaned slowly into one

What asks the final question?
What waits behind the word?
What listens to the silence
Before the silence heard?

What remains unspoken
When the speaking has begun?
What divides the shadow
From the hand that blocks the sun?

I carried all my answers
To the edge of what could be
And found them sitting calmly
Where no answer should be free

So I left the question standing
Like a glass without a name
And walked into the silence
That was asking me the same
