Trevor Pinch와 Frank Trocco의 Analog Days: The Invention and Impact of the Moog Synthesizer는 이 assumption을 해체한다.

Pinch와 Trocco는 이 발전을 invention as negotiation으로 보여 준다. musician이 engineering decision에 영향을 주고, 완성된 product는 다시 user에게 new musical idea를 돌려준다.

Buchla는 radically new electronic instrument에 그런 interface를 붙이면 musician이 old habit으로 다시 끌려갈 수 있다고 우려했다.

Paul Beaver와 Bernie Krause는 new technology에 translator가 필요한 이유를 보여 준다

Keith Emerson은 large Moog system을 progressive-rock performance로 가져오면서 또 한 번 의미를 dramatically 바꾼다. laboratory-like electronic work와 연결되던 modular synthesizer가 rock stage의 spectacular object가 되어 virtuosity, volume, visible technological ambition과 결합할 수 있었다. instrument는 futuristic하고 imposing하게 보였지만 live use는 size, tuning, reliability, transport 같은 practical problem도 가져왔다.

이 public image는 Buchla의 experimental ideal이나 Carlos의 multitracked studio precision과 크게 다르다. voltage-controlled synthesis라는 same underlying idea도 user에 따라 Bach machine, psychedelic effect generator, avant-garde laboratory, progressive-rock monster, commercial demonstration tool이 될 수 있었다.

Trevor Pinch의 science and technology studies background는 책의 가장 깊은 conceptual layer를 형성한다.

conceptual clarity가 큰 장점이다. technical material은 human story를 압도하지 않고 뒷받침하며, Moog와 Buchla는 simplistic opposite가 되지 않을 만큼 충분한 context를 얻는다. modular system에서 Minimoog로 가는 transition은 experimental technology가 mass music에 들어오는 방식을 설명하고, Carlos, Beaver and Krause, Emerson 등 user에 관한 discussion은 adoption을 sales graph가 아니라 social process로 보여 준다.
