Synthesizerは一度発明されたのではない。何になるのかを人々が交渉した
modern synthesizerはあまりに見慣れているため、そのdesignが必然だったように思える。oscillators、filter、envelopes、keyboard、knobs、そして後にはpresets、MIDI、software emulationsまでが、一つのinstrument familyへ自然に属しているように見える。Trevor PinchとFrank TroccoのAnalog Days: The Invention and Impact of the Moog Synthesizerは、そのassumptionを解体する。Harvard University Pressが2002年に刊行した本書は、Robert MoogとDon Buchlaの競合するapproach、そしてelectronic instrumentが何になるのかを決める助けになったmusicians、demonstrators、marketsを通じて、synthesisのearly social historyを復元する。
ここで"social"という言葉が決定的である。circuit designは非常に重要だが、新しいtechnologyが一つのfinal cultural meaningを抱えて登場するわけではない。designerがinterfaceを提案し、userが変更を求め、performerが想定外のtechniqueを見つけ、companyがmarketを探し、audienceがobjectは何をするものなのかを学ぶ。synthesizerには複数のdevelopment pathがあり得た。そのうちいくつかがdominantになり、後からcommon senseに見えるようになった。Analog Daysはそのhistorical decisionを再び可視化する。
Bob Moogはmusicianの声を聞きながらsystemを発展させた
Robert Moogのsynthesisへのrouteは、laboratoryでcomplete instrumentを一人で発明したengineerの物語ではない。theremin-related electronicsのearlier workとmusiciansとの密接なinteractionから育った。composer Herb Deutschはearly collaborationで重要な役割を果たし、electronic musicianが実際にplayable systemへ何を求めていたかを言語化する助けになった。そのためmodular Moogは、voltage-controlled oscillators、filters、amplifiers、envelope control、patchable modulesをめぐるdialogueから生まれた。
このmodularityは根本的である。early Moogはpredetermined workflowを持つ一枚のclosed keyboardではなかった。musicianはmodule同士を物理的にconnectしながらsignal flowを組み立て、sound design、performance、technical understandingを一つのprocessとして扱った。patch cableはinterfaceであると同時に説明でもある。どのfunctionがどこへ届くかを見せるからだ。PinchとTroccoはこのdevelopmentを、inventionがnegotiationであることの例として使う。musicianはengineering decisionへ影響し、出来上がったproductは新しいmusical ideaを再びuserへ返していく。
Don Buchlaは危険な問いを投げる。「なぜsynthesizerはpianoのように見えなければならないのか」
American West Coastでは、Don BuchlaがSan Francisco Tape Music Centerやexperimental artと結び付いた別のcultural environmentの中でelectronic instrumentsを開発した。本書で最も重要なphilosophical differenceの一つがconventional black-and-white keyboardをめぐる問題である。piano keyboardには、pitch、technique、musical controlの見た目について何世紀ものassumptionが組み込まれている。Buchlaは、radically new electronic instrumentへそのinterfaceを付けると、musicianをold habitへ引き戻すのではないかと考えた。
そのため彼のsystemsはalternative controllersを探った。Moog自身も当初conventional keyboardへreservationを持っていたが、practical collaborationとmarket forceが彼のinstrumentをそこへ向かわせた。本書の最も記憶に残るinsightの一つがこのdebateである。interface designがideologyになるからだ。controlはneutral sound engineを操作するだけではない。userが「このinstrumentは何のためのものか」と想像する範囲にも影響する。一つのinterfaceがdominantになると、後世は別のfutureが可能だったことを忘れる。
"East Coast"と"West Coast"は、もっとmessyだったhistoryの後から描かれた便利なmap
modern synthesizer cultureはMoog-style designを"East Coast"、Buchla-style designを"West Coast"と呼ぶことが多い。このdistinctionは便利である。Moog systemsはsubtractive synthesis、filters、keyboard-oriented performanceと強く結び付けられ、Buchla systemsはalternative controllers、sequencing、よりexperimentalなsound generation approachと結び付けられることが多い。しかしactual historical peopleとproductsは、二つのopposing design teamほど単純ではない。
ideaは移動し、userはcategoryをまたいでexperimentし、manufacturerは変化するmarketへ対応した。PinchとTroccoの価値は、later synthesizer marketingが二者をclean schoolへ変える前のactual individualsを戻すことにある。labelはdesign tendencyを説明するshort handとしては有用だが、最初からすべてのinstrumentやmusicianが一方のphilosophical campへきれいに属していた証拠ではない。
Wendy Carlosはexperimental machineをrecord-buying eventへ変える
1968年のWendy CarlosによるSwitched-On Bachは、本書のpivotal eventの一つになる。Moog synthesizerがmass audienceへpreciseでrecognisableなmusicを生み出せることを示したからだ。 painstakingなmultitracked performancesによって、まだexperimental electronicsと結び付けられていたmachineが、record buyerにもすぐ理解できるものへ変わった。commercial successはinstrumentのcultural positionを変えた。
radically unfamiliar soundを出せるtechnologyをnormaliseするためBachを使うことにはproductive ironyがある。repertoireはmachineのpossibilityに比べればconservativeだったが、familiarityがaudienceにunfamiliar mediumを受け入れさせた。synthesizerが既にrespectされるmusicを作れることを証明すると、later musiciansは同じtechnologyをまったく別aestheticへ押し進める自由を増やした。innovationはfamiliar doorwayを通って広がることがある。
Paul BeaverとBernie Krauseは、新technologyにはtranslatorが必要だと示す
Paul BeaverとBernie Krauseは重要なsynthesizer practitioner / evangelistになり、electronic soundをLos Angeles studio cultureへ持ち込み、modular systemを理解できないmusicianへmachineryをdemonstrateした。彼らのroleがhistorically importantなのは、新technologyにはsocial translationが必要だからだ。guitaristやproducerが、patching、control voltage、unfamiliar electronic instrumentへ何を尋ねるべきかを自動的に理解するわけではない。
specialistsがgapを埋める。equipmentを十分理解し、artistの曖昧なrequestをpatchへ変えられる。一度successful sessionが生まれるたび、次のmusicianにとってnew instrumentは少しalienではなくなる。PinchとTroccoは、designerとcelebrity performerだけを越えてinvention storyを広げる。adoptionは、existing professional cultureの中でtechnologyをusableにするintermediariesへ依存する。
Keith Emersonはmodular synthesisをstage architectureへ変える
Keith Emersonはlarge Moog systemsをprogressive-rock performanceへ持ち込み、意味を劇的に変える。laboratory-like electronic workと結び付けられていたmodular synthesizerが、rock stage上のspectacular objectとなり、virtuosity、volume、visible technological ambitionとつながる。instrumentはfuturisticでimposingに見えたが、live useにはsize、tuning、reliability、transportなどpractical problemも伴った。
このpublic imageはBuchlaのexperimental idealやCarlosのmultitracked studio precisionとは大きく違う。同じvoltage-controlled synthesisのideaでも、誰が使うかによってBach machine、psychedelic effect generator、avant-garde laboratory、progressive-rock monster、commercial demonstration toolになり得た。本書のcentral argumentがここに縮図として現れる。instrumentには一つのdestinyが内蔵されていない。userが絶えず再定義する。
Minimoogは自由を減らすことで成功する
early modular synthesizersはlarge、expensive、complexだった。Minimoogはcore synthesis componentsをportable instrumentへ統合し、fixed signal pathとconventional keyboardを与えることでcommercial landscapeを変えた。一方から見ればmodular freedomを犠牲にしたdesignで、別の見方をすればsynthesizerがeveryday touring instrumentになるのを妨げていたpractical problemを解決した。
そのcompromiseはrevolutionaryだった。keyboard playerはwallを運ぶ代わりにsynthesizerをcarryでき、oscillators、mixer、filter、envelopes、keyboard、performance controlsというarchitectureはlater analogue instrumentsが何度も継承するtemplateの一つになった。"normal synthesizer"がnormalに見え始めるのはここだ。Analog Daysはそのnormalityがlaw of natureではなくhistorical design achievementだったことを見せる点で特に優れている。
Psychedelia、advertising、popular cultureが、engineerの完全controlを越えてelectronic soundへ意味を与える
PinchとTroccoはsynthesizerをspecialist electronic compositionの中だけへ閉じ込めない。instrumentはpsychedelic culture、rock、advertising、film、product demonstrationへ旅し、electronic timbre自体がsymbolic meaningを獲得する。listenerがoscillatorを何も知らなくても、synthesizerはspace、science、modernity、technological anxiety、playful weirdnessを示唆できる。
marketもmusicianと同じくinstrument identityへ寄与する。一部soundが"the future"のshorthandになるとuserは繰り返し使い、audienceは認識を学び、clichéが形成される。同じhardwareでもprogressive rock、kosmische music、funk、advertisingでは、cultural contextが解釈を変えるため意味も違う。RetroForgeのgenre pagesでは、このsocial layerがsoundのtechnical generation explanationと同じくらい重要である。
Interview baseがproduct historyをnegotiated historyへ変える
本書はMoog、Buchla、important usersを含むinventors / musiciansへのextensive interviewsを利用し、finished productの背後に隠れたargumentとcompromiseへaccessする。Harvardのframingもこのfirsthand reconstructionを強調し、そのmethodがAnalog Daysをrelease datesやpatentsのcatalogueから区別する。
中心になるのはhuman questionだ。musicianは何を求めたか。engineerはinstrumentが何をすべきだと考えたか。systemをcommercially viableにしたのは何か。なぜ一つのinterfaceがdominantになったか。あるuserが特定momentに必要としたため存在するfeatureはどれか。このtechnology historyではinventionはcollectiveである。Bob Moogはcentralであり続けるが、すべてのlater synthesizerが一人のlone geniusから降りてきたという話にはならない。
Music historyの中にscience-and-technology-studiesのargumentが隠れている
Trevor Pinchのscience and technology studies backgroundが本書の最もdeepなconceptual layerを形作る。technologyは単に現れ、その後societyをdetermineするのではない。designer、user、market、cultural expectationが「technologyとは何か」「どう理解されるべきか」をnegotiatedする。synthesizerはそのほぼperfectなexampleだ。early electronic sound generatorは複数のinterfaceやprofessional identityの下でorganisedされ得たからである。
keyboardが最も明快なcaseだ。audienceとmanufacturerがsynthesizerを主にkeyboard instrumentと理解するようになると、later designerはそのexpectationをinheritした。historical decisionがcommon senseになり、common senseは見えなくなる。Analog Daysはdecisionを再びvisibleにし、そのinsightはsynthesisを越えて広がる。どんなmusical instrumentにもinterface、commercial history、userが受け継ぐhabitの中にassumptionが埋め込まれている。
特に優れている点
最大の強みはconceptual clarityである。technical materialはhuman storyをsupportし、圧倒しない。MoogとBuchlaにはsimplistic oppositesにならないだけのcontextが与えられる。modular systemsからMinimoogへのtransitionはexperimental technologyがmass musicへ入る方法を説明し、Carlos、Beaver and Krause、Emersonほかuserについてのdiscussionはadoptionをsales graphではなくsocial processとして示す。
何より、本書はinstrumentをsocial technologiesとして考える方法を教える。このideaを知ると、その後control panelを見る目が変わり得る。RetroForgeにとってAnalog DaysはMoog history以上であり、synthesizer / electronic-instrument section全体のconceptual foundationになる。
注意点
American Moog/Buchla storyがcenterなので、European electronic instrumentsやlater manufacturersの扱いは少ない。ARP、EMS、Oberheim、Roland、Yamaha、Sequential Circuitsには別historyが必要で、vintage instrumentの幅広いillustrated catalogueを求めるreaderは次にMark VailのVintage Synthesizersへ進むべきだ。
chronologyも1960年代とearly 1970sへ強く集中し、technology-history frameworkはconventional rock biographyよりacademicに感じられるかもしれない。instrumentがなぜ特定formを持つのかに関心があるreaderにはstrengthだが、有名keyboard anecdoteが高速で続く本を期待する人にはあらかじめ伝えるべきである。
こんな人におすすめ
synthesizerを使ったことがあり、「なぜこのinstrumentにはkeyboardがあるのか」をいつの間にか考えなくなった人なら読む価値がある。Moog enthusiastとelectronic-music historianには明白な理由があるが、progressive-rock、kosmische、studio readerにも有用で、experimental machineがpractical musical toolへどう変わったかを説明する。
最も長く残る成果はproduct chronologyの暗記ではない。なぜinterfaceが"normal"に見えるのか、そのnormalityで誰がbenefitを得たのか、一つのdesignがculturally dominantになった時にどのalternative formが消えたのかを問えるようになることである。

Harvard University Pressは2002年にhardcoverを刊行し、一般に384 pagesとしてcatalogued、ISBN 9780674008892。
2004年にpaperbackが続き、ISBN 9780674016170。
後年のHarvard printingsもあるが、基本的edition recommendationは変わらない。
text自体がstandard workであり、collector-first editionを必要としない。

standard Harvard paperbackが合理的な選択。大半のreaderにとってfirst hardbackを追う理由はない。
