Michael Azerrad의 Our Band Could Be Your Life는 겉보기에는 modest한 premise에서 시작하지만, 그 아래에는 enormous한 infrastructure가 드러난다. Black Flag, Mission of Burma, Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, Replacements, Butthole Surfers, Minor Threat, Fugazi, Big Black, Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, Beat Happening.

SST Records, self-booked touring, small venue, local promoter, 전화, letter, word of mouth, authority와의 반복적인 conflict가 underground music이 한 isolated city에서 다른 city로 이동할 수 있는 practical network를 만들었다.

Washington, D.C.

Low ticket price, all-ages show, Dischord, careful business control, obvious major-label opportunity에 대한 resistance가 principle을 practice로 보여 주는 professional organisation을 만든다.

Simple morality play라면 major label 계약은 selling out이다.

Drum machine, abrasive guitar, confrontation, intentionally anti-star presentation은 band identity 일부였고, Albini의 later recording-engineer work는 underground 안에서 형성된 ethical assumption과 분리할 수 없게 되었다.

Sonic Youth는 New York no-wave와 experimental environment에서 나와 alternate tuning, prepared guitar, noise, art-world connection을 발전시키면서 점차 larger audience에 도달했다.

Years of touring, label, college radio, fanzine, local scene이 이미 audience와 aesthetic을 만들었음을 뒤늦게 발견한 것이다. Sonic Youth의 path는 experimental world와 professional world를 동시에 점유할 수 있었기 때문에 이 transition을 유난히 잘 보여 준다.

Scenes from the American Indie Underground이지 Every Scene That Mattered가 아니다.

Explosion이 아니라 long fuse가 real story다.
