13 bandsが、「alternative rock」はmainstreamがlabelを発見する10年前から存在したと説明する
Michael AzerradのOur Band Could Be Your Lifeは、一見modestなpremiseから始まり、その下に巨大なinfrastructureを露出させる。1981から1991の間に活動した13の象徴的American underground bands、Black Flag、Mission of Burma、Minutemen、Hüsker Dü、the Replacements、Butthole Surfers、Minor Threat、Fugazi、Big Black、Dinosaur Jr.、Mudhoney、Sonic Youth、Beat Happeningを追う。これは同じsoundを13通りにしたものではない。彼らをつなぐのは、大部分で自分たちを無視したcorporate systemの外側でmusicを作りcirculateさせるpractical problemである。
titleを提供するMinutemen lyricは、そのworldのdemocratic scaleをよく表す。bandはfloorで寝て、途方もないdistanceをvanで走り、小さなlabelでrecordをpressし、fanzinesとcollege radioに頼り、小さなroomで演奏し、moneyを失い、それでもnational audienceがcentral institutionにrecogniseされる前から存在し得たので続けた。本書は1991年、Nirvanaのbreakthroughでcultureがmainstreamへ突然visibleになる直前で止まる。そのtimingによってdecade全体がalternative-rock explosionの下で長く燃えていたfuseになる。
Black Flagはtouring infrastructureそのものをmusic historyの一部にする
Black Flagがfoundationalなのはrecordだけではない。彼らが作る助けをしたroadも同じくらい重要である。SST Records、self-booked touring、小venue、local promoters、phone calls、letters、word of mouth、authoritiesとの繰り返されるconflictが、underground musicがisolated cityから別のcityへ移動するpractical networkを形成した。email、social media、online ticketing以前、そのnetworkそのものをmanualで作らなければならなかった。
Azerradのchapterが最も強いのはlogisticsがhistorical agencyになるときだ。Black Flagはexisting national underground circuitを発見して旅しただけではない。そのpersistenceが、そもそもそんなcircuitが存在し得るとdemonstrateし、他bandがlater tourを想像しやすくした。music sceneはaddress、couch、van、電話に出てくれる人から成るphysical systemになる。apparently unromanticなmachineryが、national media supportなしにnational cultureが生まれた最大の理由の一つである。
Minutemenはpunk soundをlawとして扱うことを拒み、punkを拡張する
Minutemenはtitleのpromiseを異例にconcreteにするため、本書のemotional centreかもしれない。D. Boon、Mike Watt、George Hurleyはfunk、jazz、politics、working-class experienceを引き込み、grandioseにならずintellectually adventurousなshort songsを書いた。"Jam econo"はeconomic necessityであると同時にmethodを表した。使えるものを使い、costを低く保ち、workを作ってmoveする。
このphilosophyはgenre shorthandが失いやすいdistinctionを示す。punkのdo-it-yourself permissionは、すべてのbandへhardcore musical formulaの再現を要求しなかった。Minutemenはcuriosityやcomplexityをrejectせずrock-star scaleをrejectできた。1985年のD. Boonの死はbandをabruptlyに終わらせchapterへdevastating emotional forceを与えるが、larger ideaは残る。ordinary peopleはinstitutionがqualifiedだと宣言するのを待たずserious cultureを作れる。
Mission of Burmaはundergroundがcommercially legibleでなくてもformally adventurousになれることを示す
Mission of BurmaはAmerican indie undergroundがhardcoreからalternative rockへ一方向に進んだというideaを複雑にする。angular guitar、unusual structures、tape manipulationを使い、abrasiveでconceptually ambitiousでありながらsmall-scale independent sceneへrootedしたformを作った。original careerは短く、hearing damageが終了に寄与したため、later critical influenceはinitial commercial footprintよりはるかに大きくなった。
このpatternは本書全体で繰り返される。historical importanceとcontemporary scaleはpredictablyには動かない。自分たちのactive periodにはcomparable recognitionを得なくても、later far more famous musicianへ影響できる。Azerradのcase-study structureは、こうしたgroupへ「誰に影響したか」一文に縮められないだけのspaceを与え、自分たちのtermsで存在させる。
Minor ThreatとDischordはDIYをethical argumentへ変える
Washington, D.C.はMinor ThreatとIan MacKaye / Jeff NelsonによるDischord Records設立を通じ別modelを生む。drugs / alcoholを避けることと結び付くsongsがstraight edgeのdevelopmentへ寄与し、一つのbandのintention / controlをすぐ越えるidentityへ成長した。labelもpricing、local community、independenceをめぐるpracticeを発展させ、DIYをcheap release methodだけでなくethical systemのように見せる。
complicationはidealと同じくらい重要だ。cultural movementはruleを獲得し、ruleはpolicingを生み、人々はsloganをauthorが嫌う方法でreinterpretedする。songは、それを中心に作られたmovementのfuture meaningをdictateできない。Azerradのhistoryはこのunintended consequenceをvisibleにするとき特に有用だ。independenceはfreedomを生むと同時に別のresponsibilityも作る。
Fugaziは、independent structureを守ったままscaleできるかを問う
FugaziはD.C. modelのよりdevelopedなstageを代表する。low ticket prices、all-ages shows、Dischord、careful business control、明白なmajor-label opportunitiesへのresistanceが、principleをpracticeとして見せるprofessional organisationを作った。bandは「independence=obscurity / amateurism」でなくてもよいことを証明するだけsuccessfulになった。
これは本書でも最もtransferableなlessonの一つだ。DIY historyはfailureをauthenticityの証拠としてromanticiseしがちだが、Fugaziはindependent structureが、moneyの存在を否定するふりをせずdurable、international、financially functionalになり得ることを示す。problemはprojectがgrowするかではない。growth mechanismがparticipantが守ろうとするものとcompatibleかどうかだ。independent creative enterpriseは結局そのquestionに出会う。
Hüsker Düはmajor-label boundaryをmorally complicatedにする
Hüsker Düはhardcoreのemotional / melodic rangeを拡張し、最終的にWarner Bros.と契約した。これによりundergroundが繰り返す「independenceは何を意味すべきか」というargumentの一つが生まれた。simple morality playならmajor label signingはselling outに等しい。しかしAzerradのhistoryではactual decisionはもっと難しい。underground musiciansはpoorな場合が多く、touringはexhaustingで、larger companyはindependent systemでは得られないresourceを提示できた。
riskも同じくらいrealだった。major labelはartistをmisunderstandし、expectationをimposeし、そのscaleから期待されるsupportすら提供しない場合がある。したがってuseful questionはmajor labelがinherently corruptかではなく、larger structureの中でcreative autonomyがsurviveできるかだ。1991以降、industryがNirvanaに続けるactをundergroundからaggressively探し始めた時、このproblemはcentralになる。
The Replacementsはself-sabotageをromanticに見せる。しかしconsequenceは積み上がる
Paul WesterbergのsongwritingはThe Replacementsをundergroundでもobviously talentedなbandの一つにした。一方chaotic performancesとprofessional momentumへのallergyはlegendの一部になった。storyはfunnyだが、Azerradのlong chronologyはdysfunctionをartistic authenticityへ変える危険を露出する。bandはcareerismへ抵抗しすぎ、real opportunityそのものが消えることもある。
これはindie cultureの最もseductiveなmythの一つを複雑にする。すべてのrefusalがprincipled resistanceなのではない。fear、alcohol、instabilityがrefuseしている場合もある。undergroundにもmainstreamと同じhuman weaknessがあり、later fansがdamageを「bandがpureであり続けた証拠」へ変えても変わらない。Azerradの価値はDIY cultureをそこに住む人々よりmorally cleanerにしないところにある。
Big Blackはunderground ethicsをlater recording practiceへ直接つなぐ
Steve AlbiniのBig Black chapterはindie historyをRetroForgeのproduction shelfへ自然につなぐ。drum machines、abrasive guitar、confrontation、意図的なanti-star presentationがband identityに属し、Albiniのlater career as recording engineerはundergroundで形成されたethical assumptionsから分離できなくなる。recording fee、artist control、professional relationshipへのattitudeはabstract audio philosophyだけから生まれたのではなく、conventional music-business powerへsuspiciousなsceneへ参加した経験からも形成された。
だからscene historyとstudio historyは同じ棚に置ける。engineerのbusiness modelがcultural inheritanceになり得る。gear choiceとproduction practiceはその周囲のideologyがvisibleになると理解しやすい。本書は繰り返しbroader principleを示す。infrastructureはaestheticsへ影響する。人はorganisational experienceをlater roleへ持ち込むからだ。
Sonic Youthは1991をpossibleにするbridgeの一つを作る
Sonic YouthはNew Yorkのno-wave / experimental environmentから現れ、alternate tunings、prepared guitars、noise、art-world connectionsを発展させながらgradually larger audienceへ届いた。major-label involvementはexperimental identityを即座に消さず、Nirvanaを含むyounger groupsとのrelationshipによってunderground credibilityとalternative rockへのcommercial interest拡大をつなぐ重要なbridgeになった。
1980s終盤までにindependent musicのcultural capitalはmainstreamが無視できないものになっていた。record industryは1991年にalternative musicを突然createしたわけではない。何年ものtouring、labels、college radio、fanzines、local scenesがすでにaudience / aestheticsを作っていたと発見したのである。Sonic Youthのpathはgroupがexperimental / professional worldsへ同時に存在できたため、そのtransitionを特にvisibleにする。
Beat HappeningはDIYが一つのmasculine hardcore soundを要求しなかったことを証明して本を閉じる
Calvin JohnsonとBeat Happeningをlate chapterに置くのはinspired choiceである。minimal playing、indie-pop sensibility、K Recordsとのrelationshipが、underground independenceとはどんなsoundでもあり得るかを広げる。Olympiaは別のlocal ecosystemを提供し、participationへのemphasisはDIYがAmerican hardcoreと最も結び付くaggressionとは大きく異なるmusicも可能にすることを示す。
このendingが重要だ。Black Flagにunderground全体をdefineさせればhistoryはactual infrastructureよりはるかにnarrowになる。Beat Happeningはmethodがsurviveしながらaestheticがcompletely変わることを見せる。punkのlessonが繰り返される。最もpowerfulなinheritanceはpermissionである。scene-building practiceがhistorically significantになるのは、different peopleがdifferent cultureを作るため使える時だ。
13 chaptersはAmerican independenceのcensusではなくrepresentative case studies
book structureは必然的にexclusionを作る。Bad Brains、Meat Puppets、Descendents、数多くのregional scenes、college-rock traditions、experimental artists、大部分のindependent popはchosen thirteenの外にある。canonはnotably male-heavyでguitar-band-heavyでもある。book自体がinfluentialになり、そのselectionが「undergroundとは何だったか」というlater ideaを形成し始めるほど、そのabsenceは重要になる。
Azerradのstrengthとlimitationは同じだ。selectionによってdepthを得る。各bandはmemorableになれるだけのspaceを持つが、出来上がったmapをterritoryそのものと取り違えてはいけない。subtitleはScenes from the American Indie Undergroundであって、Every Scene That Matteredではない。RetroForgeもbroader indie / alternative history pageからlinkする際、このhumilityを維持すべきだ。
Current paperbackがobvious defaultで、audiobookはstructureを巧みにmirrorする
original Little, Brown hardcoverは2001年に出て、catalogueはおよそ522–528 pagesでslight variationを持つ。Hachetteのcurrent trade-paperback recordは2 July 2002 editionを528 pages、ISBN 9780316787536としており、最もsimpleなphysical recommendationになる。2019年にはunabridged audiobookも存在し、individual chapterに異なるnarratorを配した構造は複数のdistinct band historiesから成るbookに異様によく合う。
Reading Roomではtrade paperbackがdefaultのままでよい。identifyしやすく、collector complicationなしにestablished textを代表するからだ。format-specific detailsは一つのworkをduplicate entityへ変えず別途surfaceできる。
特に優れている点
infrastructureが本書最大のsubjectである。touring、labels、economics、fanzines、local networks、practical independenceへ十分なattentionを与え、mainstream recognitionなしにnational cultureがどう存在できたかを説明する。13-band structureはhuman scaleを与え、Azerradのinterviews / researchは各sceneをdistinctに保ち、DIYをdecade全体で一つのsloganへ縮めない。
最も重要なのは、Nirvana breakthroughがoutsiderにはsuddenに見えながら、実際には何年もroadを作ってきたcultureのcommercial eruptionだったことを説明する点だ。explosionではなくlong fuseがreal storyである。
注意点
selected canonはmale-heavyでguitar bandsがdominantし、important movements / communitiesが13 chaptersの外にある。1991 endpointはstructurally elegantだが、mainstream alternative rockのconsequenceはlater historiesへ残す。DIYもromanticiseされ得る。described lifestyleの多くがどれほどexhaustingでeconomically precariousだったかを忘れればなおさらだ。independenceはcontrolを意味することが多かったが、poverty、damaged health、relentless workを意味することもあった。
こうしたlimitはvisibleに残すべきだ。bookが十分influentialで、そのmap自体がcanonになり得るからである。useful Reading Room pageならstrongly recommendしつつAmerican underground historyが13 bandsより大きいことを明確にできる。
