anecdote가 더 이상 harmless하지 않게 되는 Keith Moon의 orbit 안에서 보낸 10년
Keith Moon은 rock에서 가장 성공적으로 mythologised된 comic figure일지도 모른다. exploding toilet, wrecked room, car, costume, practical joke가 반복되는 이유는 anecdote 길이로 압축하면 여전히 웃기기 때문이다. Full Moon은 anecdote가 수년간 이어지면 어떤 일이 생기는지 보여 준다. Peter "Dougal" Butler는 1967년 roadie로 The Who 주변에 들어와 Moon의 personal assistant, driver, 거의 constant companion이 되었고, 그 role은 rock의 가장 chaotic한 personality 중 하나를 계속 움직이게 하기 위해 필요한 daily machinery 안에 그를 놓았다. Chris Trengove와 Peter Lawrence와 함께 만들어지고 1981년에 처음 출간된 memoir는 1978년 drummer의 death 직전까지 Moon 옆의 life를 따라간다. Faber의 2012 reissue는 훨씬 쉽게 구할 수 있게 했다. 곳곳에서 여전히 hilarious하지만 real value는 웃음이 얼마나 빨리 labour, enabling, grief로 변하는지 보여 주는 데 있다.

conventional musician biography는 record, tour, relationship을 따라갈 수 있지만 Moon의 public identity는 ordinary life를 반복해서 침범했다. friend, hotel staff, assistant, stranger, other musician 모두 boundary를 찾기 어려운 ongoing performance의 participant가 될 수 있었다. Butler perspective가 중요한 이유는 이 모든 것이 주변 사람에게 얼마나 많은 work를 요구하는지 볼 만큼 가까웠기 때문이다. 누군가는 drive하고, negotiate하고, clean up하고, missing drummer를 찾아야 하며, situation을 진정시키고 next obligation이 여전히 일어나도록 해야 했다. rock mythology는 star의 behaviour가 재미있는 부분이기 때문에 이런 사람을 photograph 바깥으로 crop하는 경우가 많다. Full Moon은 entourage를 friend이면서 worker로 복원하고, glamorous 1970s excess 아래의 class·labour dimension을 드러낸다.
destruction 뒤에서도 musician은 보여야 한다
Moon에 대해 쓸 때 가장 큰 위험은 famous lifestyle이 drummer를 지워 버리는 것이다. 그의 playing은 busy하고 explosive했으며 Townshend composition에 놀랄 만큼 responsive했고, 다른 drummer가 비워 둘 space를 채우는 경우가 많아 conventional metronomic foundation과 다르게 움직였다. John Entwistle의 powerful bass playing은 이런 freedom을 가능하게 하는 데 도움을 주며, rhythm section은 많은 rock group과 sharply 다른 internal balance를 만들었다. Butler는 technical drumming study를 쓰지 않으므로 precision이 필요한 musical analysis는 다른 source에서 가져와야 한다. 그러나 memoir의 lifestyle material은 한 사실을 계속 보이게 둘 때 더 잘 이해된다. Moon의 The Who 내 value는 outrageous story를 만든 데 있지 않다. 그는 contribution을 대체하기 어려운 extraordinary musician이었고, 이것이 아니었다면 훨씬 일찍 professionally impossible해졌을 정도의 chaos를 사람들이 참은 이유를 일부 설명한다.
stardom은 ordinary consequence로부터 insulation을 만든다
이 책은 successful musician이 destructive behaviour의 normal consequence에서 unusually 보호받을 수 있었던 touring culture를 기록한다. entourage는 practical damage를 흡수하고, hotel은 trouble을 예상하는 법을 배우며, alcohol과 drug는 rock economy 일부에서 normalised되고, money는 damage를 또 하나의 business expense로 만들 수 있었다. Moon은 이 system을 absurdity까지 밀어붙였다. Butler의 position이 특히 revealing한 이유는 fan도, equal-status band member도 아니었기 때문이다. staff이자 companion으로 exhilaration을 함께 즐기면서 consequence를 반복해서 처리해야 했다. 그래서 Full Moon은 Who shelf 이상에 속한다. celebrity organisation에 관한 period document이기도 하며, industry와 entourage가 extreme behaviour를 ordinary life보다 훨씬 오랫동안 sustainable하게 만들 수 있음을 보여 준다.
friendship과 employment가 하나의 dangerous role로 녹아든다
modern personal-assistant job description으로는 Butler와 Moon 관계를 거의 설명할 수 없다. 그는 chauffeur, friend, minder, conspirator, witness, crisis manager가 되었고, employment와 affection 사이 boundary는 거의 정의할 수 없었다. 이 ambiguity가 memoir의 uncomfortable depth 상당 부분을 만든다. addicted celebrity 주변의 사람은 자신이 그 person을 보호한다고 믿으면서 addiction이 계속될 condition을 보존할 수도 있다. Butler book은 Moon을 성공적으로 “handle”하는 handbook으로 읽어서는 안 된다. fame 속 addiction과 mental distress를 다룰 tool이 놀랄 만큼 약했던 culture의 evidence다. memoir의 honesty는 affection과 enabling이 moral formula 하나로 줄어들지 않고 공존할 수 있을 때 가장 유용하다.
famous story는 sequence 안에 되돌려 놓으면 더 어두워진다
그렇다. memoir에는 hotel destruction, drinking, celebrity, car, party, book을 notorious하게 만든 incident가 있다. 그 story는 evidence 일부이고 reader가 계속 돌아오는 이유 일부이기도 하다. mistake는 punchline에서 멈추는 것이다. event를 sequence로 읽으면 novelty가 닳는다. Moon의 health는 deteriorate하고 relationship은 strain되며 persona를 sustain하는 데 더 많은 energy가 필요해지면서 delight는 줄어든다. 한 paragraph에서 outrageous하고 funny하게 들리는 behaviour가 수년에 걸쳐 반복되면 frightening해진다. tone의 이 변화가 book의 real emotional arc다. Full Moon이 단순한 rock-star excess archive로 기능하는 것을 막고 mythology 안에서 살아야 했던 사람에게 그것이 어떻게 보였는지 기록하는 document로 바꾼다.
stage가 아니라 아래에서 본 The Who
Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle는 계속 중요한 presence지만 Butler는 다른 organisational level에서 그들을 본다. Townshend는 Moon을 collaborator이자 creative problem으로 설명할 수 있고, Daltrey는 bandmate이자 friend로 기억할 수 있으며, Butler는 daily life가 반복해서 자신의 practical responsibility가 된 사람을 경험한다. 이 perspective는 완전히 agree할 필요가 없다. 서로 다른 relationship을 설명하기 때문이다. contrast는 historically useful하며 하나의 synthetic Keith Moon으로 flatten하기보다 explicit하게 유지해야 한다. band는 member, crew, entourage가 동일하게 경험하지 않으며, Full Moon은 narrator의 social position이 무엇을 보이게 만드는지 보여 주는 RetroForge의 가장 분명한 example 중 하나다.
2012 Faber reissue가 practical choice인 이유
original book은 Moon death 3년 뒤인 1981년에 나왔다. Open Library는 William Morrow의 first US edition을 269 pages로 기록한다. Faber는 2012년에 Faber Finds programme 일부로 memoir를 재출간했고, Butler와 함께 Chris Trengove, Peter Lawrence credit를 유지하면서 format에 따라 약 256~264 pages로 catalogued된다. ordinary reader에게 Faber version이 sensible recommendation인 이유는 collector pricing 없이 같은 historically important memoir에 접근할 수 있기 때문이다. original 1981 copy는 immediate post-Moon period의 artefact로 value가 있지만, age alone이 editorial superiority를 만들지는 않는다.
특히 뛰어난 점
proximity가 defining strength다. Moon book 중 Butler의 day-to-day position을 그대로 재현할 수 있는 것은 거의 없고, fast anecdotal style은 subject의 manic energy와 잘 맞다가 점차 그 speed의 cost를 드러낸다. memoir는 rock history가 anonymous background로 취급하는 entourage도 humanise한다. 무엇보다 Butler의 Moon에 대한 affection이 narrative가 sad해지는 것을 막지 않는다. 이 tension은 destruction을 simple entertainment로 바꾸지 않게 하고, outrageous story를 약속한다는 이유보다 훨씬 강한 modern reason으로 book을 다시 읽게 한다.
한계
이것은 Moon death 직후 쓰인 insider memoir이므로 memory, loyalty, grief, period culture가 narrative를 형성한다. Moon story는 수십 년 동안 repeat·embellish돼 왔기 때문에 특히 spectacular anecdote는 elsewhere에서 hard fact로 재사용하기 전에 independent cross-check가 중요하다. 이 책은 detailed musicianship보다 lifestyle에 크게 focus하고, humour는 reader에게 여전히 described environment를 romanticise하도록 유혹할 수 있다. 그 temptation에는 저항해야 한다. Butler는 살아남아 이야기를 했고 Moon은 그러지 못했으며, ending 자체가 evidence의 일부다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
Moon의 musical importance를 이미 이해하고 legend 주변의 human cost를 보고 싶은 Who fan이라면 Townshend와 Daltrey 이후 이 책을 읽는 것이 좋다. Butler angle은 충분히 달라 세 book이 같은 biography를 반복하지 않고 서로 illuminate한다. drumming technique만 원하는 reader는 다른 곳으로 가야 한다. rock excess가 functioning institution이 되는 방식에 관심 있는 reader는 Full Moon을 exceptionally revealing한 period document로 볼 수 있다.
