Pete Townshend

Who Are You, Tommy, Quadrophenia, 그래서 2012 memoir Who I Am이라는 제목은 유난히 적절하다. "My Generation"을 쓴 guitarist가 승리의 회고를 펼치는 대신, Townshend는 fictional character와 audience에게 적용했던 질문을 자기 삶에도 돌린다. childhood, art school, The Who의 형성, guitar destruction, rock opera, synthesizer, Keith Moon, addiction, relationship, spiritual searching이 모두 작품 뒤의 사람을 이해하려는 긴 시도의 일부로 다뤄진다.

The Who가 guitar를 부수는 장면은 너무 완벽한 rock image가 되어 그 뒤의 intellectual context가 photograph에 가려질 수 있다. 이 contradiction은 memoir와 The Who history 전체를 관통한다. rebellion이 entertainment가 되고, performer는 예정된 rebellion이 다시 dangerous하게 느껴지도록 해야 한다.

Mod culture, feedback, physical band language

early The Who는 Mod culture와 밀접하게 연결되어 있었다. clothing, scooter, club, urban intensity는 당시 일부 동시대인의 blues purism과는 다른 social setting을 band에 제공했다. Townshend의 guitar는 점점 power chord, feedback, sheer amplified force에 의존했고, "My Generation"은 그 곡을 녹음한 young musician보다 훨씬 큰 slogan이 되었다. memoir는 youth와 permanently 연결된 lyric 옆에서 늙어가는 absurdity를 Townshend가 알고 있다는 점에서 더 깊어진다. song은 author와 같은 방식으로 나이를 먹지 않는다. youthful declaration과 later reflection 사이의 거리는 Who I Am을 단순한 early triumph account보다 더 흥미롭게 만든다.

너무 familiar해져서 original risk를 느끼기 어려운 work다. double rock album 전체에 narrative를 유지하는 것은 obvious commercial formula가 아니었고, project는 The Who에게 conventional song sequencing보다 큰 scale에서 생각하게 했다. 그래서 Who I Am은 RetroForge의 rock opera, concept album, extended form page와 특히 잘 연결된다.

따라서 "Baba O'Riley"와 "Won't Get Fooled Again"의 synthesizer sequence는 fashionable keyboard texture가 아니라 더 넓은 conceptual experiment에 속한다.

The Who의 internal structure는 결코 평화롭지 않았다. 이런 tension이 Thanks a Lot Mr KibblewhiteFull Moon을 companion book으로 중요한 이유다. narrator가 songwriter에서 singer, personal assistant로 이동하면 같은 band가 radically 다르게 보이며, 어느 하나의 account도 neutral verdict로 promotion되어서는 안 된다.

spirituality와 Meher Baba는 creative history의 일부다

Townshend의 Meher Baba에 대한 devotion은 personal philosophy와 artistic work에 깊게 영향을 주었기 때문에 eccentric celebrity garnish로 치부할 수 없다. spiritual idea는 Tommy, Lifehouse와 다른 project에 반복적으로 등장한다. Townshend는 life를 song, tour, private belief로 깔끔하게 나누지 않고 interacting system으로 제시한다.

tidy redemption arc 없는 addiction, relationship, self-examination

Who I Am은 더 messy하다. recovery, relapse, family, guilt, work가 계속 얽혀 있고, Townshend가 늘 satisfying final answer에 도달하지 않기 때문에 self-analysis는 불편할 수 있다.

Townshend는 왜 자신이 그런 work를 만들고 그런 behaviour를 했는지 알고 싶어 하며, 그래서 Tommy, Lifehouse, Quadrophenia discussion은 ordinary band history에서 보기 어려운 depth를 갖는다. art-school background, technology에 대한 interest, spiritual commitment도 The Who의 experiment가 random clever idea의 연속이 아니라 연결된 것으로 보이게 한다.

Daltrey, other bandmate, Townshend private life의 사람들은 같은 event를 다르게 기억할 수 있고, published book은 훨씬 긴 manuscript에서 상당히 줄어들었다.

The Who, songwriting, rock opera, late-1960s·1970s rock의 conceptual ambition에 serious하게 관심 있는 사람은 Townshend perspective를 위해 여기서 시작해야 한다. ordinary album보다 큰 project를 왜 반복해서 상상했는지, technology, spirituality, performance가 왜 그의 work에서 계속 충돌하는지 알고 싶은 reader에게 특히 rewarding하다. Daltrey의 frontman perspective를 위해 Thanks a Lot Mr Kibblewhite, Keith Moon world의 close-range reality를 위해 Full Moon을 함께 읽으면 좋다.
