Led Zeppelin mythology의 일부가 되어 버린 Led Zeppelin biography
어떤 전기는 mythology가 형성된 뒤 그것을 기록한다. Stephen Davis의 Hammer of the Gods는 기록한다고 주장한 mythology 자체를 만드는 데 기여했다. Led Zeppelin이 끝난 지 불과 5년 뒤인 1985년에 출간됐고, group은 더 이상 활동하지 않았으며 mystique는 엄청났고 젊은 listener는 classic-rock radio와 video를 통해 catalogue를 새롭게 발견하던 시기였다. Davis는 band의 perceived scale에 맞는 story를 제공했다. Private jet, hotel, drugs, sex, violence, occult fascination, touring power, tragedy가 모두 등장한다. 이 책이 enormous한 영향력을 얻은 이유는 너무 생생해서 여러 세대 독자에게 default version이 되었기 때문이다.
바로 그 영향력이 central editorial problem을 만든다. Participant와 later historian은 anecdote, sourcing, emphasis 일부에 이의를 제기해 왔고, sensational episode가 music 자체를 story에서 밀어낼 수 있다. 따라서 RetroForge는 Hammer of the Gods를 major rock biography이면서 동시에 rock biography가 legend를 만드는 방식의 evidence로 다뤄야 한다. 이 책의 중요성은 모든 story가 reliable해야만 유지되는 것이 아니다. 어떤 점에서는 논쟁 자체가 역사적 significance 일부다.
Yardbirds는 spontaneous barbarian force가 아니라 professional experience를 통해 Zeppelin으로 이어진다
Musical story는 Jimmy Page의 Yardbirds 마지막 시기와 group이 무너진 뒤 남아 있던 contractual obligation에서 시작한다. Robert Plant가 합류하고 Midlands network에서 John Bonham이 뒤따르며, session musician이자 arranger인 John Paul Jones가 line-up을 완성한다. 처음에는 New Yardbirds라는 이름으로 남은 date를 소화한 뒤 Led Zeppelin이 되었다. 이 origin이 중요한 이유는 후대의 네 명의 untamed heavy-rock primitive 이미지를 깨뜨리기 때문이다. Page는 광범위한 studio·session experience를 이미 갖고 있었고, Jones는 arrangement와 professional recording을 이해했으며, Plant와 Bonham도 이 project에 들어오기 전 regional band에서 이미 활동했다.
따라서 첫 album의 speed와 force를, 아무도 잘 몰랐던 상태에서 우연히 잡힌 inspiration으로 오해해서는 안 된다. Led Zeppelin은 performance, arrangement, studio, touring을 이해하는 musician으로 시작했다. Raw force mythology 밑에는 technical·strategic sophistication이 있었다. Strong Reading Room article은 그 foundation을 계속 visible하게 둬야 한다.
Peter Grant는 touring economics와 organisation의 규모를 바꾼다
Manager Peter Grant는 Zeppelin history에서 필수적인 figure다. Band의 power가 music에만 있었던 것이 아니기 때문이다. Earlier generation의 performer는 label, promoter, intermediary에게 exploit되는 경우가 많았고 Grant는 엄청난 성공을 거둔 group이 더 많은 control을 요구하고 performance에서 생긴 money의 더 큰 몫을 retain할 수 있는 arrangement를 공격적으로 추구했다. 이 변화는 broader arena-rock history에 속하며 Led Zeppelin이 successful band를 넘어 unusual autonomy를 가진 self-protective organisation이 된 이유를 설명하는 데 도움을 준다.
더 어두운 면도 같은 story에 속한다. Aggressive management는 artist를 보호할 수 있지만 intimidation이 될 수도 있고, powerful organisation은 ordinary restraint에서 사람을 insulated할 수 있다. Davis는 Zeppelin machine의 force를 즐기지만 RetroForge는 anecdote 옆에 structural context를 둬야 한다. Group의 business power는 touring economics를 reshape하는 데 기여했고, creative·financial interest를 보호했던 같은 autonomy가 destructive behaviour가 더 적은 외부 제약을 만나는 condition을 만들 수도 있었다.
scandal은 music의 범위를 설명하는 것보다 다시 이야기하기 쉽다
Hammer of the Gods의 지속적인 distortion 가운데 하나는 특정 anecdote가 false인가 여부보다 proportion의 문제다. Hotel destruction은 John Bonham의 drum sound가 왜 enormous하게 느껴지는지 설명하는 것보다 쉽고, John Paul Jones의 keyboard와 arrangement가 palette를 어떻게 넓히는지 설명하는 것보다 쉽다. Robert Plant의 voice가 catalogue 전반에서 어떻게 변하는지, Jimmy Page가 production으로 depth와 contrast를 어떻게 만드는지를 설명하는 것보다도 쉽다. Led Zeppelin은 blues, folk, acoustic guitar, heavy riffing, studio experiment, Eastern-influenced sound를 모두 사용했다. Led Zeppelin III만 제대로 들어도 one-dimensional heavy-metal monsters라는 stereotype은 유지하기 어렵다.
Excess 중심 biography는 그래서 celebrity story를 가능하게 한 artistic achievement를 오히려 작게 만들 수 있다. RetroForge는 책을 다른 것으로 가장하는 대신 internal linking으로 균형을 잡아야 한다. Wild mythology는 여기 있어야 하지만 reader는 album, instrument, studio, songwriting history 쪽으로 이동해 Zeppelin이 왜 중요한지 legend 아래에서도 들을 수 있어야 한다.
Blues borrowing은 1985 biography가 제공할 수 있는 것보다 later legal·ethical context가 필요하다
Led Zeppelin과 African American blues tradition의 관계는 중심적이면서 복잡하다. 일부 adaptation과 songwriting credit는 later legal·ethical controversy의 대상이 되었고, older rock history는 borrowing을 낭만적으로 설명하면서 copyright, attribution, unequal economics를 충분히 다루지 못하는 경우가 많았다. Willie Dixon, traditional material, Anne Bredon의 "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", Jake Holmes의 "Dazed and Confused"는 각기 다른 legal·historical relationship에 속하므로 "Zeppelin stole everything"이나 "everybody borrowed" 같은 equally useless한 두 문장으로 flatten해서는 안 된다.
핵심 source point는 시간이다. 1985년에 처음 출간된 biography가 이후 수십 년에 걸쳐 발전한 dispute, settlement, scholarship의 final authority일 수는 없다. Hammer of the Gods는 narrative와 cultural impact 때문에 여전히 가치 있고, specific songwriting attribution에는 newer specialist evidence가 필요하다. RetroForge에서 특히 중요한 distinction이다. 기억에 남는 biography 한 권이 contested credit의 sole source가 되어서는 안 된다.
Jimmy Page의 occult interest는 story를 끝없이 생산하는 machine이 되었다
Page의 Aleister Crowley에 대한 documented interest는 Led Zeppelin의 가장 오래 살아남은 mythology 가운데 하나를 만들었다. 그는 Crowley material을 수집했고 한때 Boleskine House를 소유했으며, band가 symbol을 사용하고 자신을 설명하기를 꺼렸던 태도는 speculation에 이상적인 조건을 만들었다. Davis는 이런 ingredient를 훨씬 큰 occult narrative로 amplify하는 데 기여했다. Cultural fascination 자체는 real하고 historically interesting하지만 supernatural claim은 필요하지 않다.
Modern page는 documented interest와 audience imagination에 더 많이 의존하는 story를 구분해야 한다. Occult imagery는 이미 1970s rock culture에서 huge appeal을 갖고 있었고, member가 모든 rumor를 correction하지 않는 band는 mystery aura에서 이익을 얻을 수 있었다. Silence는 공간을 만든다. Hammer of the Gods는 그 공간을 열정적으로 채웠고, 이것이 이 책이 biography만큼 myth-making discussion에도 속하는 또 하나의 이유다.
John Bonham에서 excess narrative는 더 이상 entertainment가 아니다
John Bonham의 drumming은 Led Zeppelin identity에 foundational하고 later rock musician에게 끼친 influence를 과장하기 어렵다. 하지만 그의 alcohol abuse는 점점 destructive해졌고, 1980년 9월 heavy drinking 이후 서른두 살에 사망했다. Surviving member가 replacement를 찾지 않고 Led Zeppelin을 끝낸 선택은 그가 musical system에서 얼마나 structurally 중요했는지 보여 준다.
Zeppelin excess를 다루는 어떤 retelling도 결국 joke가 작동하지 않는 지점에 도달한다. Rock culture, journalism, music business는 extraordinary drinking을 축하하다가 damage나 death가 왔을 때 뒤늦게 mourning하는 일을 반복했다. RetroForge는 Bonham의 death를 lurid story 끝의 dramatic punctuation으로 사용해서는 안 된다. 사람들은 self-destruction을 authenticity의 증거로 바꾸는 culture 때문에 실제 cost를 지불했다. 바로 이 때문에 book mythology에는 modern distance가 필요하다.
경쟁하는 narrative가 쉽게 circulation하기 전 도착했기 때문에 biography는 문화적으로 막강해졌다
Hammer of the Gods의 timing은 power의 중요한 일부였다. Led Zeppelin은 비교적 최근에 끝났고, 자신을 설명하지 않는 태도는 mystique를 유지했으며, internet에는 immediate competing testimony, archival research, fan scrutiny가 존재하지 않았다. 따라서 sensational biography 한 권이 많은 reader가 처음 접한 long version의 story가 될 수 있었다. Narrative가 그 규모로 popular memory에 들어가면 later correction은 어려워진다. Disputed anecdote가 documented alternative보다 familiar하게 느껴질 수 있기 때문이다.
Historiography 관점에서 매우 중요하다. Reliability와 influence는 같은 measurement가 아니다. Book은 일부가 challenged되어도 cultural memory를 바꿀 수 있고, 그 challenge 자체가 이후 history의 또 다른 layer가 된다. 따라서 Hammer of the Gods는 Led Zeppelin에 관한 evidence이면서 1980s가 1970s rock star를 어떻게 재구성했는지에 관한 evidence로도 읽어야 한다.
2024 revision은 chronology를 current하게 만들지만 source warning을 지우지 않는다
이 책은 2008년에 이미 update되었고, Dey Street Books / HarperCollins는 15 October 2024에 또 하나의 Revised and Updated Edition을 출간했다. Publisher material은 chronology를 2007 O2 reunion, surviving member의 later activity, Robert Plant의 Alison Krauss와의 work, updated discography까지 확장한다. Catalogue pagination은 format에 따라 대략 432~448 pages라서 RetroForge는 모든 retailer card에 한 숫자를 hard-code하면 안 된다.
중요한 editorial fact는 2024 edition이 current text라는 점이다. New reader에게는 1985 endpoint를 훨씬 넘어 story를 이어가기 때문에 default recommendation이어야 한다. 그러나 reliability warning은 그대로 남는다. New chapter가 older disputed anecdote를 retroactively documentary fact로 바꾸지는 않는다.
특히 뛰어난 점
Narrative momentum이 defining strength다. Davis는 Zeppelin의 1970s celebrity scale를 잡아내고 Peter Grant와 touring power를 기억에 남게 다루며, notorious story archive에 머무르지 않고 classic이 된 이유를 보여 줄 만큼 추진력 있게 쓴다. Led Zeppelin mythology에 미친 influence 자체가 historical importance를 갖고 2024 edition은 chronology가 major post-band reunion과 solo development 전에 멈추는 것을 방지한다. Book의 sensationalism을 강하게 비판하는 reader조차 다른 수많은 사람이 어떤 Led Zeppelin version을 이 책에서 흡수했는지 이해하는 데서 얻는 것이 있다.
한계
Sensationalism, disputed anecdote, sex·drugs·groupie culture를 둘러싼 older attitude에는 explicit modern distance가 필요하다. Musicianship은 celebrity excess에 가려질 수 있고 songwriting attribution, recording history, specific disputed event는 newer·specialised source를 요구한다. Publisher가 biography를 "ultimate"라고 부르는 language는 scholarly verdict가 아니라 marketing이다. 올바른 RetroForge stance는 dismissal도 scripture도 아니다. 영향력 enormous한 Led Zeppelin 이야기의 한 version으로 비판적으로 읽고 later work와 비교해야 한다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
Band 주변 mythology에 관심 있는 Zeppelin fan, celebrity biography가 cultural legend를 만드는 방식을 연구하는 reader, Stephen Davis와 Mick Wall을 비교하려는 사람에게 자연스럽다. 가장 productive한 순서는 이 책을 famous version으로 먼저 읽고, When Giants Walked the Earth와 specialist source를 통해 이미 settled처럼 보였던 질문을 다시 여는 것이다.
