Mick Wall의 When Giants Walked the Earth는 Led Zeppelin에게 이미 압도적으로 유명한 biography가 있다는 사실을 알고 2008년에 등장했다. Hammer of the Gods는 private jet, hotel destruction, drugs, occult mythology를 통해 수십 년 동안 popular story를 정의했다. 그 material을 반복하는 것만으로는 의미가 적었다. Wall은 대신 rock journalism에서의 긴 경험과 Jimmy Page, Robert Plant를 포함해 Zeppelin 주변 인물과 과거 접촉했던 경험을 바탕으로 large-scale, research-heavy full-band biography를 만들었다. 결과적으로 이 책은 더 넓고 심리적 해석에 더 관심이 많으며 의도적으로 argumentative하다.

Grant에 대한 Wall의 emphasis는 charismatic manager를 cast에 한 명 더 넣는 것 이상이다. Musical history를 economics와 celebrity insulation에 연결하며, band scale을 great record의 신비로운 consequence가 아니라 실제 operating system으로 이해하게 한다.

Rock mythology는 둘을 연결해 self-damage가 artistic force를 설명하는 것처럼 만들고 싶어 한다. 하지만 그렇지 않다. Bonham의 musical ability는 technique, feel, listening, physical intelligence에서 나왔고 addiction은 그를 해쳐 결국 죽였다.
Wall의 wider Zeppelin culture 설명은 damage가 펼쳐진 environment를 보여 줄 수 있지만 modern page는 이 distinction을 explicit하게 유지해야 한다. Biography는 destructive behaviour를 탐구하되 그것을 genius의 ingredient처럼 다뤄서는 안 된다. Enormous modern Zeppelin narrative 한 권을 원하는 reader에게 formidable하다.
한계
Reconstructed passage는 strict documentary biography를 선호하는 reader에게 불편할 수 있고, occult material은 dramatic해서 proportional attention을 쉽게 넘어설 수 있다. 600 pages는 진짜 commitment이며 모든 biography는 누가 access 가능하고 누가 말하려 했는지에 따라 source limit을 갖는다. 따라서 이 책은 literary technique가 visible한 deeply researched independent interpretation으로 읽어야지 모든 sentence가 fact로 직접 convert되는 transparent archive로 읽어서는 안 된다.

Hammer of the Gods 이후 deeper modern biography를 원하는 Zeppelin reader, Peter Grant와 arena-rock business architecture에 관심 있는 사람, research와 literary reconstruction을 구분하며 읽을 의향이 있는 독자에게 가장 적합하다. 두 large biography는 서로 다른 method가 Led Zeppelin story를 얼마나 크게 바꾸는지 보여 주기 때문에 함께 읽을 때 가장 유용하다.
