lineup poster 너머까지 나아간 독자를 위한 festival book
대부분의 festival 책은 performer, 기억에 남는 set, audience가 집으로 가져간 이야기에서 시작한다. The Pop Festival은 질문의 수준 자체를 바꾼다. George McKay가 편집하고 Bloomsbury Academic에서 2015년에 출간한 이 책의 14편 국제 essay는 festival이 사회적·문화적 형식으로서 무엇을 하는지 묻는다. 집단 행사가 media를 통해 어떻게 재현되는지, race와 politics가 의미를 어떻게 형성하는지, sponsorship이 무엇을 바꾸는지, free festival은 commercial event와 어떻게 다른지, participation, protest, urban space, spirituality, safety, tourism이 어떻게 경험 일부가 되는지를 살핀다. 결과적으로 illustrated Woodstock history보다 의도적으로 덜 cinematic하지만, 질문이 "stage 위에서 무슨 일이 있었는가?"에서 "stage 주변에는 어떤 temporary society가 만들어지고 있었는가?"로 바뀌는 순간 훨씬 더 유용해진다. Rock canon이 festival history의 시작점을 정하기 전에도 festival은 존재했다
McKay의 historical framing은 1950s Britain까지 거슬러 올라간다. Popular memory가 Monterey Pop과 Woodstock을 music festival의 발명처럼 보이게 만들 수 있다는 점에서 중요하다. Jazz festival, folk gathering, civic event, 정치적 성격을 띤 음악 집회는 canonical rock era 이전부터 youth culture, public space, class, policing, popular entertainment에 관한 질문을 이미 제기하고 있었다. 따라서 Woodstock은 나무의 뿌리가 아니라 훨씬 오래된 나무에서 뻗어 나온 눈부신 가지 하나가 된다. 이런 넓은 genealogy는 RetroForge가 festival page를 연결하는 방식도 바꾼다. Rock festival은 1967년에 갑자기 시작되는 대신 jazz와 folk culture 쪽으로 거슬러 올라갈 수 있다. 또한 "festival"이라는 단어가 하나의 American countercultural model을 뜻하는 shorthand로 굳는 것을 막는다. 서로 다른 genre와 community는 lineup의 sound가 완전히 달라도 훗날 rock event를 형성한 조건 아래 이미 대규모 gathering, performance, identity를 실험하고 있었다.
후대에 기억되는 festival은 crowd가 집으로 돌아간 뒤 만들어진 media event이기도 하다
이 collection에서 가장 유용한 theme 가운데 하나는 mediation이다. Woodstock, Monterey, Altamont, Isle of Wight 또는 후대 landmark festival을 "안다"고 생각하는 대부분의 사람은 실제로 그 자리에 없었다. 그들이 아는 것은 선별된 photograph, concert film, recording, documentary, television excerpt, anniversary book, 그리고 반복해서 유통된 비교적 소수의 anecdote다. Camera는 어디를 볼지 선택하고 editor는 어떤 performance가 남을지 결정하며, historian은 결국 weekend 전체를 상징하는 visual shorthand가 될 image를 고른다. 그렇다고 festival memory가 가짜가 되는 것은 아니다. 다만 historical object에 여러 층이 있다는 뜻이다. 현장의 event와 media를 거친 event는 서로 연결되지만 동일하지 않다. Counterculture는 musician, audience, promoter, police가 똑같이 공유한 하나의 경험이 아니다
Countercultural festival culture를 다루는 essay들은 temporary utopia라는 익숙한 언어를 복잡하게 만든다. Rock festival은 ordinary commercial society로부터의 해방처럼 자신을 제시하면서 ticket을 판매할 수 있다. Audience는 community를 경험하는 동안 promoter는 scheduling을 경험하고, musician에게는 workplace이며, police에게는 crowd management이고, local resident에게는 disruption일 수 있다. 이 모든 현실은 같은 field 안에 동시에 존재할 수 있다. Event 전체를 "counterculture"라고 부르면 차이를 설명하기보다 가릴 수도 있다. Academic festival studies가 RetroForge에 특히 유용해지는 지점이 바로 여기다. "spirit of a generation" 같은 phrase보다 날카로운 질문을 던지게 하기 때문이다. 누가 gathering을 조직했는가? 누가 돈을 냈는가? 누가 일했는가? Audience는 어떻게 대표되었는가? 어떤 behaviour가 허용됐고 어떤 behaviour가 criminalised되었는가? 책의 강점은 participant가 그 안에서 실제 freedom, solidarity, transformation을 경험할 수 있었다는 사실까지 부정하지 않으면서 이런 구조를 계속 visible하게 둔다는 데 있다.
Wattstax는 Woodstock을 보편적 template로 취급하는 습관을 깨뜨린다
Gina Arnold가 다루는 Wattstax 1972는 특히 중요하다. Classic festival history가 rock canon을 중심으로 조직되면 압도적으로 white한 archive가 되기 쉽기 때문이다. Stax Records와 연결되고 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum에서 열린 Wattstax는 performance, Black cultural identity, Watts community를 rural countercultural gathering의 mythology와 전혀 다른 사회·정치적 맥락에서 연결했다. 이 차이는 질문 자체를 바꾼다. Black audience는 camera와 commentator를 통해 어떻게 재현되는가? Major gathering은 African American cultural politics 안에서 무엇을 의미하는가? Label identity, local history, civic space는 event를 어떻게 형성하는가? Wattstax를 포함함으로써 이 collection은 하나의 spectacular festival이 모두를 위한 form의 정의가 되어서는 안 되는 이유를 보여 준다. RetroForge festival archive도 여러 community와 model을 visible하게 유지할수록 역사적으로 더 강해진다. Woodstock과 얼마나 비슷한지를 기준으로 모든 gathering을 평가해서는 안 된다.
Free festival은 rock era를 traveller culture, rave, temporary space의 politics와 연결한다
이 collection은 British free-festival culture를 new-traveller와 free-party history 쪽으로도 따라가며, conventional genre history가 자주 분리해 놓는 사회적 lineage를 열어 준다. Stonehenge는 free-festival culture의 symbolic centre가 되었고, 훗날 sound system과 rave-era gathering은 access, policing, land, temporary autonomy, normal commercial structure 바깥에서 모일 권리를 둘러싼 관련 갈등을 물려받았다. Soundtrack은 크게 달라지지만 social question이 그냥 사라지는 것은 아니다. 그렇다고 hippie rock에서 electronic dance music으로 곧장 이어지는 musical genealogy를 만들어도 된다는 뜻은 아니다. 더 강한 연결은 gathering의 형식에 있다. Temporary community, contested space, alternative infrastructure가 decade를 넘어 반복된다. Duisburg는 보이지 않던 crowd management를 central historical subject로 바꾼다
European techno culture, Love Parade, 2010 Duisburg disaster를 다루는 chapter는 celebratory festival nostalgia에 필수적인 correction을 제공한다. Crowd disaster로 21명이 사망하면서 entrance design, capacity, communication, crowd flow, emergency access가 administrative detail이 아니라 생사의 문제가 되었다. 이것은 직접적인 editorial consequence를 갖는다. Large attendance figure를 자동으로 triumph의 증거처럼 써서는 안 되고, enormous crowd photograph를 spectacle만으로 제시해서도 안 된다. Scale은 risk를 만든다. Festival infrastructure는 cultural history 일부다. Protestival과 Burning Man은 audience participation의 의미를 넓힌다
다른 essay는 protest가 festival form을 빌려 쓰는 순간과, festival이 participant에게 spectator 이상의 역할을 요구하는 순간을 살핀다. Demonstration은 music, costume, procession, carnival, temporary public space를 사용할 수 있고, 같은 strategy는 political conflict를 spectacle로 바꾸는 만큼 새로운 participation을 만들 수도 있다. Burning Man은 흔히 "No Spectators"로 요약되는 ideal을 통해 또 다른 model을 제공한다. Attendee가 stage에서 전달되는 programme을 소비하는 paying observer에 머무르지 않고 environment 자체를 만드는 데 참여한다는 생각이다. 이 구분은 installation, food, wellness, decoration, immersive environment가 festival experience 일부로 판매되는 modern event culture에서 점점 더 중요해진다. Artist, audience, customer의 전통적 경계가 덜 안정적이 되면서 festival history는 music history인 동시에 design·experience-economy history가 된다.
Sponsorship는 temporary freedom 아래의 business architecture를 드러낸다
Chris Anderton의 branding·sponsorship 논의는 festival mythology가 자주 숨기는 또 하나의 모순을 다룬다. Contemporary festival은 beverage company, telecommunications brand, hospitality, VIP area, naming arrangement가 얽힌 거대한 commercial platform으로 기능하면서도 everyday consumer life에서 벗어난다는 emotional idea를 판매할 수 있다. Sponsorship가 존재한다고 audience experience가 자동으로 무효가 되는 것은 아니지만 temporary city가 어떻게 financing되고 presentation되는지는 달라진다. Woodstock 자체도 original gathering이 끝난 지 오래된 뒤 엄청난 가치의 brand가 되었고, countercultural memory가 market 안으로 들어갈 수 있음을 보여 줬다. 그렇다고 original experience가 모두 insincere했다는 뜻은 아니다. Metadata correction이 중요한 이유는 The Pop Festival이 single-author monograph가 아니라 edited collection이기 때문이다. McKay는 project에 기여하고 intellectual frame을 제공하지만, 14편의 국제 essay는 서로 다른 discipline, case study, writing style을 책 안으로 가져온다. 이 multiplicity가 강점 중 하나다. Festival culture는 하나의 analytical voice로 강제되지 않고 musicology, sociology, cultural studies, media studies, music-business perspective를 통해 검토된다. 동시에 이것이 주요 reading limitation도 만든다. 하나의 continuous narrative를 원하는 독자는 chapter의 저자가 바뀔 때 tone, method, subject가 이동하는 것을 만나게 된다. Authoritative record에는 두 publication date와 두 common pagination convention이 남아 있다. University of East Anglia research record는 21 May 2015, Bloomsbury의 현행 UK hardback page는 16 July 2015를 제시하며 이는 format 또는 territory 차이를 반영한다. Physical print record는 xx + 234 pages, publisher ebook·catalogue metadata는 256 pages를 사용한다. RetroForge는 어느 숫자나 날짜 하나를 universal truth로 강제해서는 안 된다. 가장 깔끔한 방법은 publication year 2015를 유지하고 edition note에서 authoritative date variation을 설명하며 실제 표시되는 product에 exact pagination을 연결하는 것이다. 특히 뛰어난 점
가장 큰 강점은 methodological expansion이다. Race, media, politics, safety, sponsorship, urban space, participation, business infrastructure가 모두 festival history의 legitimate한 일부가 되고 international structure는 American 또는 British event 하나가 universal model이 되는 것을 막는다. 1950s gathering culture에서 rock counterculture, free festival, electronic dance event, participatory festival, contemporary brand architecture까지 연결하면서도 모두 동일한 scene이라고 가장하지 않는다. 한계
Academic prose는 illustrated event history보다 즉각적으로 친근하지 않을 것이고, 14명의 author는 필연적으로 stylistic·methodological variation을 만든다. Edited structure는 첫 page부터 마지막 page까지 하나의 이야기가 이어지기를 원하는 독자에게 fragmented하게 느껴질 수 있다. 2015 publication date 때문에 post-pandemic festival economics, later safety debate, 또 한 decade의 experience-driven commercialisation은 책 밖에 남는다. 이 limitation은 sales language로 감출 것이 아니라 분명히 해야 한다. 이 책은 festival history를 복잡하게 만들기 위한 research-rich collection이지 backstage page-turner가 아니다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
RetroForge editor, festival researcher, student, 그리고 visually spectacular한 Woodstock·festival-history book을 이미 읽은 reader가 가장 분명한 audience다. Famous performance 하나에서 클릭해 즉흥적으로 살 book은 아닐 가능성이 크지만, festival section 전체를 더 잘 쓰게 만드는 working reference가 될 수 있다. Reading Room에 포함할 충분히 강한 이유다.
