Behind the Glass는 production을 fixed technical recipe가 아니라 contextual judgement로 이해하도록 가르친다.
Martin의 formal musical training과 arranging ability는 verbal idea를 musician이 연주할 part로 바꾸게 했고, The Beatles는 song, melody, 점점 unusual한 request를 가져왔으며 EMI engineer는 technical knowledge를 제공했다. finished record는 한 사람이 모든 역할을 몰래 수행한 결과가 아니라 그 interaction에서 나왔다.
Beach Boys와 함께 studio는 composition 일부가 되고, session musician, layered recording, later vocal work를 활용해 하나의 band performance를 intact하게 capture하지 않아도 되는 record를 구축할 수 있었다.
Phil Ramone은 engineer, producer, studio owner background를 통해 technical experience와 musical judgement가 wide range of project에서 만나는 또 다른 model을 보여 준다.
여기서 subtitle How They Craft the Hits는 gear promise보다 넓어진다. technically flawless한 wrong performance는 여전히 wrong하다.
Abbey Road에서의 work와 Pink Floyd의 The Dark Side of the Moon을 포함한 record 참여는 Alan Parsons Project가 engineer-producer relationship을 자신의 artist-led format으로 전환하기 전에 깊은 technical experience를 제공했다. engineering에서 production으로 들어온 사람은 session을 sound, signal, recorded element arrangement 관점에서 먼저 들을 수 있고, 다른 producer는 song structure나 performance psychology에서 시작할 수 있다.
이 labour는 ordinary studio documentation으로 복원하기 어렵다. tape log는 take는 기록하지만 그 take를 가능하게 만든 conversation은 기록하지 않기 때문이다. Behind the Glass는 equipment manual과 sessionography가 닿기 어려운 영역까지 production history를 넓힌다.
충분히 많은 conflicting professional을 만나고 나면 producer를 단순히 "makes it sound good" 하는 사람으로 보는 fantasy는 훨씬 flexible하고 realistic한 이해로 바뀐다.
Howard Massey는 이후 또 다른 producer interview collection인 Behind the Glass, Volume II를 출간했다. retailer search는 title과 cover가 비슷해 두 권을 쉽게 섞지만 Volume II는 2000 book의 revised edition이 아니라 별도의 sequel이다.
이 문제는 잘못된 affiliate product를 피하는 것 이상이다. sequel을 "updated edition"으로 취급하면 first volume의 identity가 사라지고 false bibliographic history가 만들어진다. original collection은 turn of the millennium 무렵 professional production을 보여 주는 portrait로 계속 유용하며, Volume II는 catalogue가 확장될 경우 나중에 별도 Reading Room page를 받을 수 있다.
Volume I의 identity와 content가 editorial priority이며, preliminary pages를 세는 convention이 다른 것보다 Volume II와 혼동하는 것이 훨씬 심각한 error다.
