37人のproducerが、「producer」は一つの仕事ではないと説明する
Howard MasseyのBehind the Glassは、一見単純な問いから始まる。record producerは実際に何をする人なのか。2000年にBackbeat/Miller Freemanから出た本書に収録された37件のinterviewは、一つのuniversal answerを拒み、その拒否こそ本書最大のlessonになる。George Martin、Brian Wilson、Phil Ramone、Arif Mardin、Alan Parsonsほかのproducerは、arrangement、engineering、songwriting、editing、psychology、performance coaching、studio organisationをまったく異なる組み合わせで実践している。
そのため本書は"producer tricks"のcatalogueよりはるかに有用である。standardised professionならstandardised methodも期待できるが、record productionはartist、material、technology、目前のproblemによって変わる。強いinterventionが必要な人もいれば、spaceを与えたほうがよい人もいる。綿密な準備が有効なsessionもあれば、全員が考えすぎる前のmomentを保存することが大事なsessionもある。したがってBehind the Glassはproductionを固定recipeではなく、contextual judgementとして理解させる。
George Martinはtranslatorとしてのproducerを示す
Beatles readerにとってGeorge Martinは最も入りやすい人物である。彼の仕事は、異なる専門性の間を翻訳するproductionのmodelを示すからだ。Martinのformal musical trainingとarranging abilityは、口頭のideaをmusician向けのpartへ変換できた。一方The Beatlesはsongs、melodies、次第に奇妙になるrequestを持ち込み、EMI engineersはtechnical knowledgeを提供した。finished recordはそのinteractionから生まれ、一人がsecretlyあらゆるroleを担ったわけではない。
Masseyのinterview formatが特に有効なのは、Martin自身がphilosophyを語れるからであり、"fifth Beatle"というnicknameへ圧縮されない。本書のlessonは、すべてのproducerがGeorge Martinのmethodを模倣すべきということではない。彼のskill setが、たまたま担当artistが投げかけたproblemに非常によく合った、ということだ。同じstyleを別bandへmechanically適用しても失敗した可能性がある。だからこそinterviewのdiversityが重要になる。
Brian Wilsonはartistとproducerの境界を崩す
Brian Wilsonはまったく異なるmodelを示す。songwriter、arranger、artist、producerが次第に一人へ収束していくからだ。Beach Boysではstudioそのものがcompositionの一部になり、session musicians、layered recording、後から加えるvocal workによって、recordは一回のband performanceをそのままcaptureする必要がなくなる。Pet Soundsがlegendの中心になるのは当然だが、より大きなhistorical importanceはrecording processに対するcontrolにある。
このmodelは後世のmusicianへ大きな影響を与えた。artist自身がstudioをauthorshipのextensionとして使えることを示したからだ。Masseyの本が有効なのは、Wilsonが誰か他人のproduction philosophyのexampleとして現れるのではなく、このcombined roleを内側から語れる点にある。Martinとのcontrastは明快だ。一方はself-contained groupの外側からcollaborateするproducerで、もう一方はmaterialを生み出すcentral artistであると同時にproducerでもある。
Phil Ramoneはequipmentだけでは終わらないstudio professionalを代表する
Phil Ramoneはengineer、producer、studio ownerとしてのbackgroundを持ち、多様なprojectでtechnical experienceとmusical judgementを組み合わせる別modelを作る。彼のinterviewはmicrophoneやroomの話から自然に、「説得力あるperformanceをどう得るか」という実務的問題へ移る。best key、singerのconfidence、timing、communication、そしていつanother takeを追うのをやめるかは、technically "better"なmicrophoneが手元にあるかどうか以上に重要になり得る。
ここでsubtitleのHow They Craft the Hitsはgear promiseより広い意味を持つ。technically flawlessでもwrong performanceならrecordはwrongのままだ。productionとは、その違いをrecogniseし、musicianがrecordする価値のあるperformanceを出せるconditionを作る能力でもある。Masseyは何度もprofessionをこのhuman problemへ戻すため、technical specificationへ関心が薄いreaderにも価値がある。
Alan Parsonsはengineerからproducerへのbridgeを見せる
Alan Parsonsのcareerは、engineering backgroundがproduction philosophyをどう形作るかを示す。Abbey Roadでの仕事、Pink FloydのThe Dark Side of the Moonを含むrecordへのinvolvementによって深いtechnical experienceを得た後、Alan Parsons Projectではengineer-producer relationshipをartist-led formatの中へ持ち込んだ。engineeringからproductionへ入る人はsessionをsound、signal、recorded elementsのarrangementとしてまず聞くかもしれない。一方、別のproducerはsong structureやperformance psychologyから始めることもある。
どちらが本質的に優れているわけではない。professional historyによって「最初に何へ気付くか」が変わる。Behind the Glassは37件のinterviewを重ねるほど有用になり、readerはjobの唯一の正しいdefinitionを探すことをやめ、それぞれのbackgroundがどんなproblemを解く準備をしてきたかを見るようになる。
Arif Mardinはgear cultureに、harmonyとarrangementもまだ存在すると教える
Arif Mardinは、equipment obsessionになりがちなproduction writingへの特に重要なcorrectiveを与える。soul、pop、jazz-influenced settingを横断する彼の仕事は、microphoneを比較するより前に、harmony、structure、orchestration、dynamics、performanceについてのmusical decisionがrecordをどれほど変え得るかを示す。深いmusical literacyを持つproducerなら、existing partをどうrecordするかを変えるのではなく、musicianが何を演奏するかそのものを変えてtrackをtransformできる。
これはRetroForgeへ持ち運びやすいlessonの一つだ。studio historyはclassic consolesとcompressorsのshowroomになりやすいが、technologyはmusicへ接続された時にだけ意味を持つ。Mardinのperspectiveはproductionをmusicianshipとして読めるようにし、どれほど優れたengineering chainでも、musical logicが未解決なarrangementを救えないことを思い出させる。
Productionの心理的労働はtapeにほとんど痕跡を残さない
本書が繰り返し明らかにするのは、producerの仕事の大部分がequipmentではなくpeopleに関係していることだ。自信のないsinger、内部分裂したband、"rehearsalだから"と言われた時のほうが良いperformanceをするmusician、songを持ちすぎて溺れているartist、singleを要求するlabelは、すべてproduction problemになり得る。producerは、ときに自分が管理していると相手へ感じさせずにそれらを管理しなければならない。
このlabourは普通のstudio documentationから復元しにくい。tape logはtakeを記録するが、そのtakeを可能にしたconversationは記録しないからだ。そのためinterview formatは理想的である。technical archiveではほとんど残らないpsychological processについて、producer自身が何をしているつもりだったか説明できる。結果としてBehind the Glassは、equipment manualやsessionographyが届かない領域までproduction historyを拡張する。
37のmethodが、本書をself-help化することを防ぐ
professionalsがどう"craft the hits"するかを扱うtitleは、簡単にformulaを約束できる。しかしMasseyのinterviewsは逆を行く。準備を重視するproducerもいればspontaneityを重視するproducerもいる。musicianを一緒にcaptureしたい人も、layer by layerでrecordを作る人もいる。heavily interveneする人も、artistの意識から消えようとする人もいる。こうしたcontradictionは、hidden master methodの周囲にあるeditorial noiseではない。それ自体がeducationである。
techniqueが成功するのは、特定のmomentに特定のartistが抱える特定のproblemを解くからだ。problemを理解せずtechniqueだけcopyするとcargo-cult productionになる。つまり、有効だったreasonを抜いたsurface behaviourだ。十分な数の相反するprofessionalに触れるころには、producerを単に「soundを良くする人」と考えるfantasyは、もっとflexibleでrealisticな理解へ置き換わる。
Volume IIはreplacementではなくsequel
Howard Masseyは後にBehind the Glass, Volume IIを刊行し、別のproducer interview collectionを作った。retailer searchではtitleやcoverが似ているため二冊が混ざりやすいが、Volume IIは2000年bookのrevised editionではなく別のsequelである。この違いはRetroForge metadataで明示的に保つ必要がある。
これはwrong affiliate productを避ける以上の問題だ。sequelを"updated edition"として扱えばVolume Iのidentityを消し、false bibliographic historyを作ってしまう。original collectionはturn-of-the-millennium professional productionのportraitとして今も価値があり、Volume IIはcatalogueが広がった時に独立Reading Room pageを持てる。
以前のpage-count conflictはrecommendationから取り除かれた
fact-checkは、かなり異なるpage countを、同じphysical productの意味ある二versionのように扱っていたearlier misleading conflictを修正した。Bloomsburyのcurrent Backbeat recordはISBN 9780879306144を338 pagesとしており、最も重要なstable metadataは明快である。2000年初版、ISBN 9780879306144、37人のproducer interviewから成る。
したがってRetroForgeはuncertain catalogue paginationを人工的controversyへ変えるべきではない。exact page countは表示するexact physical productへ属する。Volume Iのidentityとcontentsがeditorial priorityであり、preliminary pagesの数え方がcatalogueごとに違うことより、Volume IIと混同するほうがはるかに重大なerrorである。
特に優れている点
最大の強みはvarietyだ。37人のintervieweeによってproductionの柔軟性を無視できなくなり、practical adviceとartistic philosophyが一つのmethodologyへ押し込まれず共存する。有名人は明白なentry pointになるが、より大きなbenefitはconceptualだ。producer creditがなぜ重要なのか、同じjob titleを持つ二人のproducerがなぜまったく異なる仕事をしても成立するのかが分かるようになる。
RetroForgeのcross-link sourceとしても非常に強い。ほぼすべてのproducerが複数のartist、studio、album、technologyへつながる。以前ならmetadataに見えたproducer creditが、music historyの別branchの入口になる。それこそReading Roomがsiteのほかの部分をdeepeningする方法である。
注意点
interviewは2000年前後のものなので、laptop-centred production、contemporary vocal editing、streaming-era workflow、広範なremote collaborationはほぼhistorical frameの外にある。その後toolsは大きく変化したが、performance、judgement、communicationについてのolder principleは今も有用である。
また、producer自身が自分のmethodを分析している点も忘れてはいけない。self-explanationは有益だが完全ではない。実際にはmessyだった仕事を後からcoherent philosophyへ整理することもあり、successful professionalはhitになったresultを知った上でdecisionを記憶する。したがってinterviewはunquestionable technical doctrineではなくoral professional historyに属する。
こんな人におすすめ
aspiring producer、"behind the glass"のpersonが何を加えるのかまだ説明できないmusician、equipment beyondで考えたいengineer、RetroForgeでproducer名を何度も見るmusic fanにはすべて実用的だ。gear listへ還元せずにjobを理解可能にするため、ordinary listeningとprofessional studio cultureの間に特に強いbridgeを作る。
読後にuniversal ruleが増えるより、better questionが増えるほうが望ましい。producer collectionが与えられるeducationとして、そのほうがたぶん有用である。
