Lineup posterの先へ進んだ読者のためのfestival book
festival本の多くはperformer、記憶に残るset、audienceが持ち帰ったstoryから始まる。The Pop Festivalは問いのlevelを変える。George McKayが編集し、Bloomsbury Academicから2015年に刊行された本書では、14本の国際的essayがfestivalを社会的・文化的形式として捉え、gatheringがmediaによってどう表象されるか、raceやpoliticsが意味をどう形作るか、sponsorshipが何を変えるか、free festivalとcommercial eventがどう異なるか、participation、protest、urban space、spirituality、safety、tourismがexperienceの一部になる仕組みを問う。結果はillustrated Woodstock historyほどcinematicではなく、その代わり「stage上で何が起きたか」から「stageの周囲にどんなtemporary societyが作られていたか」へ問いが変わったときに、より有用になる。RetroForgeにとって、本書は一つの有名eventへ付け足すtitleではなく、festival archive全体のmethodological infrastructureになる。
Rock canonがfestival史の始点を決める前からfestivalは存在していた
McKayのhistorical framingは1950年代Britainまで遡る。これは重要である。popular memoryはMonterey PopやWoodstockがmusic festivalそのものを発明したように見せがちだからだ。jazz festivals、folk gatherings、civic events、politically chargedなmusical assembliesは、canonical rock era以前からyouth culture、public space、class、policing、popular entertainmentをめぐる問いを生んでいた。したがってWoodstockは木そのもののrootではなく、もっと古いtreeの壮大な一branchになる。この広いgenealogyによってRetroForgeのfestival pageのつなぎ方も変わる。rock festivalは1967年に突然始まるのではなく、jazzやfolk cultureへ遡れる。また"festival"という語が、一つのAmerican countercultural modelのshorthandになることも防げる。genreもcommunityも異なる人々が、lineupのsoundがまるで違っていても、large-scale gathering、performance、identityの実験をすでに行っていたのである。
後から記憶されるfestivalは、crowdが帰ったあとに作られるmedia eventでもある
collectionで特に有用なthemeの一つがmediationである。Woodstock、Monterey、Altamont、Isle of Wightその他のlandmark festivalを「知っている」と考える人の大半は現地にいなかった。知っているのは選ばれたphotographs、concert films、recordings、documentaries、television excerpts、anniversary books、そして何度も流通した比較的少数のanecdotesである。cameraはどこを見るかを選び、editorはどのperformanceを残すか決め、historianは週末全体のvisual shorthandになっていくimageを選ぶ。だからfestival memoryが偽物になるわけではない。しかしhistorical objectにはlayerがある。fieldで起きたeventと、mediaを通して形成されたeventは関係しているが同一ではない。RetroForgeもfestival guideを作るたびにそのprocessへ参加する。つまり一枚のphoto、一人のperformer、一つの"defining moment"を選ぶことで、future readerが受け取るversionを一部constructしている。だからこそarchiveは、familiar frameの外へ落ちるものにも注意を向ける必要がある。
Countercultureはmusician、audience、promoter、policeが等しく共有する一つのexperienceではない
countercultural festival cultureを扱うessayは、temporary utopiaという慣れたlanguageを複雑にする。rock festivalはordinary commercial societyからの解放を掲げながらticketを売れる。audienceがcommunityを体験する一方で、promoterはschedulingを、musicianはworkplaceを、policeはcrowd managementを、local residentはdisruptionを体験できる。これらは同じfieldに同時に存在し得る。event全体を"counterculture"と呼ぶだけでは、違いを説明するどころか隠してしまう場合がある。academic festival studiesがRetroForgeに特に有用なのは、"spirit of a generation"というphraseでは答えられない、より鋭い問いを促すからだ。誰がgatheringをorganiseしたのか。誰がpayしたのか。誰が働いたのか。audienceはどうrepresentされたのか。どのbehaviourがtolerateされ、どれがcriminaliseされたのか。本書の強みは、participantが本物のfreedom、solidarity、transformationを感じ得たことを否定せず、こうしたstructureも見えるままにする点にある。
WattstaxはWoodstockをuniversal templateとして扱う癖を壊す
Gina ArnoldによるWattstax 1972の議論は特に重要である。classic festival historyはrock canon中心に整理すると圧倒的にwhiteになり得るからだ。Stax Recordsと結び付き、Los Angeles Memorial Coliseumで開催されたWattstaxは、performance、Black cultural identity、Watts communityを、rural countercultural gatheringのmythologyとは大きく異なるsocial / political contextへ置いた。その違いが問いを変える。Black audienceはcameraやcommentatorによってどうrepresentされるのか。African American cultural politicsの中でlarge gatheringはどんな意味を持つのか。label identity、local history、civic spaceはeventをどうshapeするのか。Wattstaxを含めることで、collectionは一つの壮大なfestivalにform全体を代表させてはいけない理由を示す。RetroForgeのfestival archiveも、複数のcommunityとmodelをvisibleに保ち、それらをWoodstockへどれほど似ているかで測らないほうがhistorically strongerになる。
Free festivalはrock eraをtraveller culture、rave、temporary spaceのpoliticsへつなぐ
collectionはBritish free-festival cultureからnew-traveller、free-party historyへの流れも追い、conventional genre historyが分断しがちなsocial lineageを開く。Stonehengeはfree-festival cultureのsymbolic centreとなり、その後のsound systemsやrave-era gatheringsも、access、policing、land、temporary autonomy、normal commercial structureの外側で集まる権利をめぐる類似したconflictを受け継いだ。soundtrackはdramatically変わるが、social questionがそのまま消えるわけではない。だからといってhippie rockからelectronic dance musicへの一直線なmusical genealogyを作るべきではない。より強いconnectionはgatheringの形式にある。temporary communities、contested spaces、alternative infrastructuresがdecadeを越えて繰り返される。RetroForgeにとってfestival sectionは、genreそのものを同一のcultural objectと偽らず1970s countercultureからlater electronic scenesへ橋を架けられる。
Duisburgはcrowd managementを見えないlogisticsから中心的historical subjectへ変える
European techno culture、Love Parade、2010 Duisburg disasterを扱うchapterはcelebratory festival nostalgiaへの不可欠なcorrectiveになる。crowd disasterで21人が死亡し、entrance design、capacity、communication、crowd flow、emergency accessはadministrative detailではなく生死の問題になった。editorial consequenceも直接的である。大きなattendance figureを自動的にtriumphの証拠として書くべきではなく、enormous crowdのphotographもspectacleだけとして提示すべきではない。scaleはriskを生む。festival infrastructureはcultural historyの一部である。audience safetyは、正常に機能している間はspectatorが意識しないsystemへ依存しているからだ。RetroForgeのevent pageでも、productionとcrowd designをlineupの下にあるfootnoteではなく、その横へ置くほうがresponsibleになる。
ProtestivalとBurning Manはaudience participationの意味を広げる
別のessayは、protestがfestival formを借りるmomentと、festivalがparticipantへspectator以上のroleを求めるmomentを扱う。demonstrationはmusic、costume、procession、carnival、temporary public spaceを使える一方、同じstrategyがpolitical conflictをnew participationへ変えるのと同じくらい簡単にspectacleへ変えることもある。Burning Manは"No Spectators"と要約されるidealによって別modelを示す。attendeeはstageから届けられるprogrammeを見るpaying observerだけでなく、environmentを作る側へ参加する。このdistinctionはmodern event cultureでますますrelevantになる。installation、food、wellness、decoration、immersive environmentsまでfestival experienceの一部として売られるため、artist、audience、customerのtraditional lineが不安定になる。festival historyはmusic historyであると同時にdesign / experience-economy historyにもなる。
Sponsorshipはtemporary freedomの下にあるbusiness architectureを露出する
Chris Andertonのbranding / sponsorship論はfestival mythologyが隠しがちな別のcontradictionを扱う。contemporary festivalはbeverage company、telecommunications brand、hospitality、VIP area、naming arrangementを含むlarge commercial platformとして機能しながら、everyday consumer lifeから逃れるemotional ideaも売れる。sponsorshipの存在だけでaudience experienceが偽物になるわけではないが、temporary cityがどうfinance / presentされるかは変わる。Woodstock自体もoriginal gatheringが終わった何十年も後に非常に価値のあるbrandになった。それでもoriginal experienceすべてがretroactively insincereになるわけではない。RetroForgeのfestival pageがnostalgiaを越えるには、まさにこうしたstructural contextが必要である。posterにはperformerしか載っていなくても、eventを作るのはpromoter、sponsor、local authority、audienceでもある。
George McKayはeditorであり、その区別自体が本書のmethodの一部
metadata correctionは重要である。The Pop Festivalはsingle-author monographではなくedited collectionだからだ。McKayはprojectへ寄稿しintellectual frameを与えるが、本書にはdiscipline、case study、writing styleの異なる14本のinternational essayが入る。このmultiplicityこそstrengthの一つで、festival cultureがmusicology、sociology、cultural studies、media studies、music-business perspectiveを通して調べられ、一つのanalytical voiceへ強制されない。同時にそれが主要なreading limitationも作る。一つのcontinuous narrativeを求めるreaderは、chapterごとにtone、method、subjectが変わることになる。RetroForgeはこのsource typeをpublic metadata / schemaでも維持すべきだ。George McKayをsole authorと記述するのはbibliographic nicetyの間違いではなく、本がなぜこのように見え、読まれるのかをmisrepresentすることになる。
2015年のdateとpage countはedition-level metadataであって、guessで解くproblemではない
authoritative recordには二つのpublication dateと二つのcommon pagination conventionが残る。University of East Angliaのresearch recordは21 May 2015、Bloomsburyのcurrent UK hardback pageは16 July 2015。これはformatまたはterritory differenceを反映する。physical print recordsはxx + 234 pages、publisher ebook / catalogue metadataは256 pagesを使う。RetroForgeは一つのnumberやdateをuniversal correctnessへ強制すべきではない。clean approachは2015 publication yearを保持し、edition noteでauthoritative date variationを説明し、displayしているproductへexact paginationを結び付けることだ。同じdisciplineは二つのprint ISBN、9781623568207と9781623569594にも当てはまる。これらはproductをidentifyするもので、本書のintellectual argumentに矛盾するversionではない。
特に優れている点
collection最大のstrengthはmethodological expansionである。race、media、politics、safety、sponsorship、urban space、participation、business infrastructureのすべてがfestival historyの正当なsubjectになり、international structureによって一つのAmerican / British eventがuniversal modelになることを防ぐ。1950s gathering cultureをrock counterculture、free festivals、electronic dance events、participatory festivals、contemporary brand architectureへつなぎながら、それらが同一sceneだとは装わない。RetroForgeにとっては、もう一冊のcolorful festival memoirよりstrategically usefulかもしれない。conceptがdozens of current / future event pagesを改善できるからだ。lineup検証のあとに何を問うべきかをarchiveへ教えてくれる。
注意点
academic proseはillustrated event historyほどimmediately invitingではなく、14人のauthorがいる以上stylistic / methodological variationは避けられない。edited structureはfirst pageからlast pageまで一つのstoryを求めるreaderにはfragmentedに感じられ、2015 publication dateのためpost-pandemic festival economics、later safety debates、さらに10年分のexperience-driven commercialisationはbook外にある。こうしたlimitはsales languageで隠さずexplicitにすべきだ。これはfestival historyをcomplicateするresearch-rich collectionであり、backstage page-turnerではない。
こんな人におすすめ
RetroForge editor、festival researcher、student、そしてvisually spectacularなWoodstock / festival-history booksをすでに読んだreaderが最も明確なaudienceである。一つの有名performanceからclickして衝動買いする本というより、festival section全体の書き方を改善するworking referenceになりやすい。それはReading Roomへ置く非常に強い理由である。
