1962년까지 가는 데 거의 1,000페이지를 쓰고도 그 선택이 합리적으로 느껴지는 Beatles 전기
대부분의 Beatles biography는 fame 이전의 시간을 runway처럼 다룬다. Mark Lewisohn은 airport와 그곳으로 이어지는 road, passenger가 출발한 neighbourhood까지 만든다. Tune In은 그의 예정된 The Beatles: All These Years history의 첫 volume이며, 많은 전기가 “진짜 이야기의 시작”으로 취급하는 national breakthrough 직전인 1962년에 끝난다. family, school, Liverpool neighbourhood, musical influence, early group, Hamburg residency, friendship, rivalry, management, record-company encounter가 방대하게 복원된다. The Beatles의 origin story가 band가 유명해진 만큼 빠르게 단순화되었기 때문이다. standard trade edition만 해도 territory에 따라 약 944~960페이지이고, two-volume Extended Special Edition은 1,728페이지, 약 780,000 words에 이른다. 규모는 absurd하게 들리지만, 반복되는 shorthand가 무엇을 지워 왔는지 책이 보여 주면 선택이 이해된다.
깊이는 모두가 안다고 생각하는 이야기에 contingency를 돌려준다
익숙한 origin sequence는 folklore 같은 inevitability를 얻었다. John이 Paul을 만나고, Paul이 George를 소개하고, Pete Best가 Ringo로 교체되고, Brian Epstein이 band를 발견하고, George Martin이 계약하고, Beatlemania가 따라온다. 압축하면 모든 event가 destiny를 향해 완벽하게 가리킨다. Lewisohn은 이 comfort를 제거한다. band는 실패하고 personnel은 바뀌며 record company는 그들을 거절하고, manager는 uncertain decision을 내리고, personal relationship은 history가 나중에 어떻게 평가할지 전혀 모르는 이유로 변한다. musician 자신도 path가 어디로 가는지 모르는 경우가 많다. 이 contingency 복원이 Tune In의 가장 중요한 achievement일 수 있다. The Beatles는 미리 정해진 future를 향해 이동하는 네 개의 monument가 아니라, 다른 곳으로 갔을 수도 있는 선택을 하는 teenager와 young adult가 된다.
"Liverpool"이 brand가 되기 전의 Liverpool
Lewisohn은 Liverpool을 Beatles에 붙은 decorative accent가 아니라 social environment로 다룬다. post-war family history, neighbourhood, local music culture에 상당한 attention을 주고, skiffle은 expensive training이나 equipment 없이 teenager가 music에 들어갈 수 있는 길을 제공했기 때문에 중요하다. American rock and roll은 record와 cinema를 통해 들어오고, local group이 늘어나며 Quarry Men은 미래 greatness의 obvious seed가 아니라 훨씬 큰 scene 안의 한 node로 나타난다. 이 context는 Lennon–McCartney meeting을 더 의미 있게 만든다. 그들은 역사적 공간에서 충돌한 abstract songwriter가 아니라 특정 city, class environment, 빠르게 변하는 musical culture에 의해 형성된 teenager다. density는 부담스러울 수 있지만, 나중에 붙은 "Merseybeat"라는 단어 뒤의 조건을 이해하기 전에 Liverpool이 그 단어로 납작해지는 것을 막는다.
Hamburg는 완전한 social world가 된다
Hamburg residency는 Germany가 단순히 Beatles가 “연주를 배운 곳”이라는 익숙한 shorthand를 Lewisohn이 거부하기 때문에 책에서 특히 rewarding한 부분이다. 긴 set은 stamina와 huge repertoire를 요구했고, 까다로운 audience는 stagecraft를 강요했으며, musician 사이의 관계는 exhausting condition 속에서 더 강하게 시험받았다. Stuart Sutcliffe의 존재와 eventual departure, Astrid Kirchherr의 influence, visual development, Sutcliffe의 death가 비극적인 side note가 아니라 더 넓은 social world 안에 결합된다. 그래서 Hamburg는 musicianship, identity, friendship, ambition이 동시에 시험된 시기처럼 느껴진다. Lewisohn은 훨씬 완전한 life를 제공하며 family, sexuality, business background, ambition, vulnerability와 실제로 band를 위해 수행한 practical work를 함께 보여 준다. professional management는 contract, presentation, booking, record company를 상대로 한 persistence를 의미했지만, 책은 Epstein을 essential하게 만들기 위해 flawless visionary로 만들 필요가 없다. 이 구분이 중요한 이유는 origin story가 한 명의 rescuer에게 supernatural foresight를 보상하는 경향이 있기 때문이다. Tune In은 success를 convergence로 제시한다. musicianship, songwriting, management, timing, industry decision, luck가 상호작용한다. Epstein의 contribution은 magical discovery가 아니라 sustained professional effort로 이해될 때 오히려 더 인상적이다.
George Martin과 EMI라는 threshold
첫 EMI relationship도 수십 년의 hindsight가 매끄러운 이야기로 만든 지점이다. George Martin은 나중에 Beatles recording history와 분리할 수 없는 인물이 되었지만, 초기 connection은 그가 네 명의 unmatched genius를 즉시 알아봤기 때문에 생긴 것이 아니다. publishing interest, earlier rejection, personnel question, practical opportunity가 모두 영향을 주었다. Martin의 later importance는 outcome이 아직 uncertain했던 historical encounter에서 자라나며, EMI threshold를 단순한 “genius recognises genius” legend보다 훨씬 흥미롭게 만든다.
Pete Best, Ringo Starr와 success story 안에 숨은 cruelty
Pete Best의 dismissal은 later success가 교체를 거의 mathematical inevitability처럼 보이게 하기 때문에 early Beatles history에서 가장 emotionally charged된 event 중 하나다. Lewisohn은 decision을 세밀하게 복원하면서 그것이 emotionally clean했다고 가장하지 않는다. Ringo Starr의 도착은 단순히 한 drummer가 다른 drummer보다 “better”했다는 crude formulation을 넘어 group chemistry를 바꿨고, Best의 removal은 상상하기 어려운 success 직전에 배제된 사람에게 고통스러운 human event로 남았다. granularity가 중요한 이유는 누구도 의도적으로 cruel하지 않았더라도 famous history는 대부분 winner에 의해 쓰이기 때문이다. outcome을 알고 나면 discarded possibility를 진지하게 보기 어려워진다. Tune In은 충분한 uncertainty를 돌려줘 reader가 이 사건을 Beatlemania 전에 history가 체크해야 했던 box가 아니라 실제 decision으로 보게 한다.
Trade edition과 Extended Special Edition은 실제로 다른 product다

Lewisohn은 original manuscript가 약 780,000 words에 달했고, Little, Brown이 전체 version을 premium two-volume Extended Special Edition으로 출간하는 데 동의했다고 설명했다. 그는 이후 central narrative를 보존하면서 mainstream trade edition을 위해 manuscript를 줄였다. 결과는 단순히 크기가 다른 같은 book이 아니다. trade version은 territory에 따라 약 944~960페이지이며, Extended Special Edition은 1,728페이지에 additional character, context, detail layer를 포함한다. 그래서 second-hand price도 크게 달라질 수 있다. Tune In은 The Beatles의 global fame 이전에 끝난다. Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road를 기대한 reader는 거기까지 도달하지 못한다. 그 점은 책을 extraordinary하게 만드는 동시에 frustrating하게 만들 수 있다. 가치는 유명 record를 향해 서두르지 않는 데 있다. Lewisohn은 남은 story를 다룰 further volume을 계획했기 때문에 RetroForge는 Volume One을 Beatles entire career의 complete biography처럼 암시해서는 안 된다. 대신 beginning에 관한 놀라울 만큼 완전한 account다. first Beatles book을 고르는 사람에게 이 차이는 중요하다. childhood부터 breakup까지 한 volume으로 원하는 reader는 다른 source가 필요하고, Beatles가 실제로 어떻게 Beatles가 되었는지 묻는 reader는 가장 야심찬 answer 중 하나를 찾은 셈이다.
특히 뛰어난 점
research가 핵심 attraction이지만 chronology의 quality도 그만큼 중요하다. date는 repetition으로 흐려진 story를 dismantle하게 하고, social history는 Liverpool, Hamburg, family, class를 fame 이전의 filler가 되지 않게 한다. 가장 인상적인 점은 outcome을 모두 알고 있는 event에도 suspense를 만들어 낸다는 것이다. popular biography에서 드문 achievement다. extreme detail은 때때로 하나의 dramatic hidden fact가 아니라 later transformation을 가능하게 한 small condition의 accumulation을 보여 준다. RetroForge에 특히 가치 있는 method다. music history는 landmark 사이를 점프하려는 유혹이 항상 강하지만, Tune In은 landmark 사이의 road도 history로 취급할 때 무엇이 보이는지 보여 준다.
한계
obvious limitation은 size다. trade edition도 거대하고, Extended Special Edition은 “Beatles 정보가 너무 많다”는 표현이 실질적으로 의미 없는 reader를 위한 책이다. extreme detail은 특히 famous record에 빨리 도달하고 싶은 reader에게 narrative momentum을 늦출 수 있다. unfinished multi-volume structure도 self-contained career biography를 원하는 reader에게는 limitation이다. 이런 점은 accidental하지 않다. Lewisohn은 depth를 speed보다 우선하겠다는 deliberate choice를 했다. 따라서 buying decision은 책이 “good”한지보다 reader가 이런 종류의 historical immersion을 원하는지에 더 달려 있다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
serious Beatles reader가 자연스러운 audience이며, 같은 열 개의 origin anecdote를 조금씩 다른 prose로 읽는 데 지친 사람에게 특히 그렇다. 물리적으로 manageable하면서도 매우 detailed한 narrative를 원하면 trade edition을, additional layer를 원하고 1962년 안에서 아주 오래 살 준비가 되어 있다면 Extended Special Edition을 고르면 된다. later Beatles를 위해서는 이 volume을 supplement해야 한다. beginning을 위해서는 이 extraordinary patience 자체가 recommendation이다.
