1960s version
Barry Miles는 Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now를 쓰기에 유난히 좋은 위치에 있었다. 그는 1960년대 McCartney를 알았고, Indica Bookshop and Gallery와 later underground newspaper International Times를 통해 London counterculture에 직접 관여했다. 따라서 decades later lost world를 reconstruct하는 biographer로만 period에 접근한 것이 아니다.
Many Years from Now는 이 binary에 반박한다.
Paul's side에서 본 songwriting partnership
McCartney recollection은 full하게 들을 가치가 있는 primary perspective이며, specific authorship claim이 중요한 경우 other testimony와 documentary evidence와 비교해야 한다.
private life와 cultural environment가 교차한다
biography는 1960s McCartney의 personal relationship도 다루며 actress Jane Asher와의 long relationship, later Linda Eastman과의 partnership이 포함된다.
*Sgt. Pepper*와 McCartney-centred idea machine
McCartney의 Sgt. Sgt. Pepper는 Lennon, Harrison, Starr, George Martin, engineer, outside musician이 함께한 collective work였고 어느 participant의 memoir나 authorised biography도 entire process를 포함할 수 없다.
later Beatles years에서는 business structure가 foreground로 올라온다. 이 detail level에서 보면 Yoko Ono가 단순히 “broke up the Beatles” 했다는 popular explanation은 유지하기 어렵다. Many Years from Now는 McCartney가 왜 특정 decision을 그렇게 해석했는지, 그 action을 만든 business concern까지 설명할 수 있기 때문에 가치 있다.
Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now는 later decade를 equally detailed하게 다루는 것보다 youth와 Beatles years에서 특히 가치가 크다. exhaustive Wings history, complete solo catalogue, later life까지 이어지는 biography를 원하는 reader는 추가 source가 필요하다. Miles가 cultural scene 일부를 personal하게 알고 있고 McCartney가 extensive retrospective testimony를 제공한 period가 precisely 책이 unusual authority를 갖는 영역이기 때문이다. title 자체도 "When I'm Sixty-Four" lyric에서 가져왔으며, project의 retrospective quality를 강화한다. older McCartney가 public identity가 형성된 cultural·creative world를 돌아본다.
이 work는 full later solo career, archival Beatles era, major post-1997 development보다 훨씬 이전에 멈추므로 complete modern life of McCartney처럼 제시해서도 안 된다.
songwriting, 1960s London, Revolver, Sgt.
