The Beatles catalogue가 1960년대의 지도로 바뀐다
The Beatles에 관한 책은 personality, recording session, business dispute, clothing, tour, individual album 등 무엇이든 있다. Ian MacDonald의 Revolution in the Head는 다른 길을 택한다. 녹음된 음악 자체가 구조의 중심축이 된다. catalogue를 song-by-song으로 따라가며 MacDonald는 한 track이 어떻게 만들어졌는지만이 아니라 1960년대라는 cultural movement 안에서 무엇을 의미하는지도 묻는다. 결과는 technical reference manual도 conventional biography도 아니다. 강하게 논쟁적이고 역사적으로 야심차며, 한 페이지에서는 짜릿하고 다음 페이지에서는 독자를 화나게 할 수 있는 의미에서의 criticism이다. 1994년에 처음 출간되고 MacDonald 생전에 개정된 뒤, 그가 2003년에 사망한 후 2005년에 revised Pimlico edition으로 다시 나왔다. 이 책이 오래 살아남은 이유 중 하나는 disagreement가 usefulness를 줄이지 않기 때문이다. 독자는 그의 verdict를 완전히 거부하면서도 그 뒤에는 같은 record를 다르게 들을 수 있다.
song-by-song architecture가 작동하는 이유
The Beatles는 놀라운 속도로 변했고, MacDonald의 format은 그 acceleration을 들리게 한다. "Love Me Do"는 1962년에 속하지만, 4년도 지나지 않아 "Tomorrow Never Knows"는 이미 tape, rhythm, studio processing을 compositional material로 다룬다. 거기서 "A Day in the Life", "I Am the Walrus", "Helter Skelter", "Because", 그리고 마지막 Abbey Road medley까지의 거리도 마찬가지로 인상적이다. chronological biography도 이 발전을 설명할 수 있지만, song-by-song study는 instrumentation, structure, lyrics, arranging, production이 record마다 변하는 모습을 독자가 직접 따라가게 한다. George Harrison의 role은 커지고, Ringo Starr의 drumming은 점점 더 특이한 material에 맞춰 변화하며, George Martin은 arrangement 안으로 더 깊이 들어간다. engineer와 tape technology도 decade 초에는 상상하기 어려웠을 정도의 창작적 중요성을 얻는다. band의 evolution은 career milestone 요약이 아니라 들을 수 있는 decision의 연속이 된다.
MacDonald에게는 opinion이 있고, 그래서 이 책은 살아 있다
이 책은 모든 Beatles song을 예의 바르게 essential이라고 선언하지 않는다. MacDonald는 rank하고, dismiss하고, praise하고, complain한다. fan이 사랑하는 late-period work를 놀랄 만큼 harsh하게 평가하기도 하고, 작아 보이는 material에서 의외의 가치를 찾기도 한다. Lennon과 McCartney도 canonical name이라는 이유로 criticism에서 면제되지 않는다. 이 argumentative temperament가 Revolution in the Head의 장수에 큰 역할을 한다. factual guide는 더 나은 session data가 나오면 대체될 수 있지만, 강한 critical interpretation은 다른 informed listener가 반대할 수 있기 때문에 오히려 오래 흥미롭다. 위험은 MacDonald의 압축되고 자신감 넘치는 prose가 judgement를 proof처럼 들리게 할 수 있다는 점이다. RetroForge는 이 차이를 반드시 보존해야 한다. 그의 verdict는 책의 intellectual character이지 elegant sentence 아래 숨어 있는 objective measurement가 아니다.
1960년대는 두 번째 protagonist다
subtitle은 중요하다. MacDonald는 record를 consumer culture, youth identity, drugs, politics, counterculture, changing sexual attitudes, 그리고 post-war restraint에서 late-1960s turbulence로의 이동과 계속 연결한다. 따라서 "Strawberry Fields Forever"는 Mellotron, tape edit, vocal arrangement를 넘어 특정 historical moment 안에 놓인 inward psychedelic language가 된다. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band는 1967과 popular music이 cultural transformation에 참여할 수 있다는 belief에 관한 더 넓은 argument의 일부가 된다. 이 broader frame은 책을 단순 discography보다 훨씬 야심차게 만들지만, 동시에 독자가 interpretation을 가장 경계해야 하는 지점이다. MacDonald의 decade view는 자신의 generational, political, aesthetic assumption을 반영한다. song 주변의 cultural essay는 Beatles 뒤에 놓인 neutral scenery가 아니라 독자가 참여하고 논쟁해야 할 argument다.
session data와 criticism을 혼동해서는 안 된다
MacDonald의 entry에는 recording date, personnel, instrumentation이 포함되기 때문에 technical source로 사용하고 싶어지기 쉽다. orientation에는 유용하지만 documented studio chronology를 위한 더 적절한 specialist reference는 Mark Lewisohn의 The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions다. 두 책의 차이는 생산적이다. Lewisohn은 주로 studio에서 무엇이 언제 일어났는지에 관심을 두고, MacDonald는 완성된 recording이 무엇을 의미하는지, 그리고 자신이 그것을 성공이라고 보는지에 관심이 있다. 두 책을 함께 읽는 편이 어느 한 저자에게 두 역할을 모두 맡기는 것보다 훨씬 가치 있다. 이는 RetroForge의 중요한 원칙도 보여 준다. archive, memoir, criticism은 서로 다른 evidence form이며, 강한 music-history page는 각 source type이 가장 잘할 수 있는 일을 맡길 때 신뢰도가 높아진다.
Lennon, McCartney와 모든 song을 한 personality에 배정하는 위험
Lennon–McCartney credit는 두 writer가 얼마나 달라졌는지 가릴 수 있고, MacDonald는 collaboration과 cross-pollination을 인정하면서도 그들의 compositional tendency를 자주 구분한다. Lennon은 점점 introspection, surreal language, sonic experiment 쪽으로 기울고, McCartney는 뛰어난 formal versatility, melodic instinct, arrangement에 대한 fascination을 보여 준다. 이런 contrast는 유용하지만 Beatles mythology는 이를 과장해 모든 track을 한 personality의 순수한 projection처럼 만들 수 있다. 실제 역사는 더 collaborative하며, idea는 writer, producer, engineer, bandmate 사이를 이동한다. George Harrison의 발전은 익숙한 two-genius narrative를 더욱 복잡하게 만든다. decade 말에 "Something"과 "Here Comes the Sun"이 등장하면 그를 단순 secondary contributor로 취급하는 서술은 점점 유지하기 어려워진다. MacDonald의 framework는 차이를 선명하게 하되 caricature로 굳히지 않을 때 가치가 크다.
technology가 musical language가 된다
Revolution in the Head가 RetroForge와 자연스럽게 맞는 이유 중 하나는 recording choice에 대한 주의다. 저자의 temperament와 분리할 수 없는 책
Ian MacDonald는 critic, editor, songwriter, classical music writer였고, 그의 prose는 elegant하고 compressed하며 놀라울 정도로 confident할 수 있다. 이 자신감은 책에 힘을 주는 동시에 지속적인 controversy 일부를 만든다. 독자는 late Beatles work에 대한 특정 judgement와 post-1960s world에 관한 서술 일부에 스며든 broader cultural pessimism에 반대해 왔다. 이런 disagreement는 책임 있는 guide 안에 있어야 한다. critical study는 모든 면에서 옳기 때문에 중요해지는 것이 아니기 때문이다. 때로 가장 큰 가치는 같은 record를 깊이 이해하는 knowledgeable listener들이 얼마나 강하게 disagreement할 수 있는지 보여 주는 데 있다. writer의 personality는 analysis 주변의 오염이 아니라 책의 method 일부이며, Revolution in the Head를 session ledger와 구분하는 요소다.
2005 edition
original book은 1994년에 나왔고, 그 뒤 revision이 이어진 뒤 MacDonald가 2003년에 사망한 이후 2005 Pimlico edition이 posthumously 출간됐다. Google Books는 그 later version을 revised, 약 515페이지로 기록하며, 이후 correction과 addition 때문에 new reader에게 가장 안전한 default가 된다. Earlier Fourth Estate 또는 Pimlico copy는 특히 influential critical work의 publication history에 관심 있는 collector에게 여전히 매력적이지만, RetroForge는 AbeBooks가 여러 version을 보여 줄 때 year와 edition을 분명히 표시해야 한다. later cover를 earlier text의 metadata와 아무렇게나 결합해서는 안 된다. 2005 edition 추천의 이유는 editorial completeness이지, 단순히 newer printing이 자동으로 superior하다는 가정이 아니다.
특히 뛰어난 점
이 책의 가장 뛰어난 재주는 익숙한 song을 다시 낯설게 만드는 것이다. 수십 년간 The Beatles를 들어 온 reader도 arrangement detail, historical connection, hostile judgement 하나 때문에 갑자기 다시 들어야 할 필요를 느낄 수 있다. architecture도 유난히 reusable하다. 처음부터 순서대로 읽을 수도 있고 특정 track이 궁금할 때마다 shelf에서 꺼낼 수도 있다. cultural context는 discography 이상의 ambition을 부여하고, prose는 firsthand memoir인 척하지 않으면서 강한 personality를 갖는다. 이 조합 때문에 later scholarship이 technical detail을 refine한 부분이 있어도 여전히 유용하다. Revolution in the Head는 documentary research를 대신하지 않는다. documentary fact가 음악적으로 왜 중요한지 느끼게 해 주는 companion이다.
한계
MacDonald의 opinion은 잔인할 정도로 categorical할 수 있고, reverence를 원하는 reader는 가끔 책을 방 건너편으로 던지고 싶을 것이다. 일부 technical detail은 archival release와 session research가 확장되면서 later Beatles scholarship에 의해 refine되었으므로 precise chronology에는 Lewisohn과 다른 specialist source가 더 적합하다. cultural-history section도 settled consensus가 아니라 interpretation으로 인식해야 한다. 마지막으로 책은 Beatles era에서 끝나며 solo career에 동등한 narrative attention을 배분하려 하지 않는다. 이런 한계는 책의 목적을 망치지 않는다. Beatles의 recorded work와 그 decade를 다루는 forceful critical study이지, band와 연결된 모든 사람의 complete history가 아니라는 점을 정의한다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
Beatles record를 이미 잘 알지만 다르게 듣고 싶은 독자라면 논쟁하고, 재발견하고, 더 파고들 것을 찾을 수 있다. album 또는 song page에서 들어오는 reader에게 특히 효과적이다. 각 entry가 arrangement, production, cultural context로 이어지는 compact rabbit hole이 될 수 있기 때문이다. documented studio chronology에는 Lewisohn, band 자체의 recollection에는 The Beatles Anthology, full origin story에는 Tune In을 함께 읽으면 좋다. 이 책들은 서로를 취소하지 않는다. 서로 다른 method가 serious Beatles shelf를 유용하게 만든다.
