Stones가 collective하게 답하다
2003년이 되면 Rolling Stones는 이미 40년 넘게 존재했고, According to the Rolling Stones는 fame의 첫 rush 동안 쓰인 memoir와 전혀 다른 object가 된다. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood는 record, tour, personnel change, popular culture의 여러 transformation을 돌아보고, editor Dora Loewenstein과 Philip Dodd는 Stones world 주변 사람의 essay와 함께 recollection을 large illustrated history로 구성한다. 이 책은 individual memoir의 collective counterpart로 기능한다. Life에서는 Richards가 narrative를 control하고, Stone Alone에서는 Wyman의 archival perspective가 중심이 되지만, According to the Rolling Stones에서는 여러 principal voice를 통해 institution 자체가 말한다. 이 collective structure가 가장 큰 asset이며, 모든 official history에 붙는 normal caveat의 이유이기도 하다.

Brian Jones는 말할 수 없지만 structurally central하다
2003 collective history의 unavoidable limitation은 1969년에 사망한 Brian Jones의 absence다. 하지만 Rolling Stones formation을 serious하게 설명하려면 그의 centrality를 인정해야 한다. Jones는 early group assemble을 도왔고 blues direction을 밀었으며 band name을 제공했고 later studio work가 확장되면서 wide range of instrumental colour를 더했다. early Stones는 Black American blues와 R&B에 깊이 committed된 young British musician이었다. Jagger-Richards energy가 dominant한 page에서 Watts의 restrained observation 하나가 emotional tone을 바꿀 수 있고, band는 항상 centre를 차지하려는 personality만으로 움직이지 않는다는 reminder가 된다. 2021년 그의 death는 2003 first-person material을 당시보다 지금 더 valuable하게 만든다. later history는 Watts를 document할 수 있지만 새 retrospective testimony를 만들 수는 없다. illustrated official history는 Stones internal balance에 대한 그의 importance가 시간이 지나며 더 분명해진 voice를 보존한다.
Mick Taylor era는 essential하지만 다른 narrator를 통해 filtered된다

Richards는 수백 페이지를 혼자 control할 때와 collective history에 참여할 때 다르게 들리고, Stone Alone을 읽은 후 principal voice structure에서 Wyman의 absence도 의미를 갖는다. 따라서 이 책은 overview이면서 여러 surviving participant가 task를 나눠 가질 때 institution이 스스로를 어떻게 narrate하는지 보여 주는 evidence이기도 하다.
한계
official history는 band가 central narrative를 control한다는 뜻이고 absent 또는 former member는 equal terms로 contribute할 수 없다. chronology는 2003년에 멈춰 이후 20년 넘는 Stones activity가 밖에 남는다. large image-heavy format은 dense investigative prose를 원하는 reader에게 덜 attractive할 수 있고, generic하게 들리는 title은 retailer search를 messy하게 만들 수 있다. 그래서 exact edition metadata가 중요하다. 이런 limit이 period collective account로서 value를 줄이지 않는다. 모든 member와 era를 omniscient하게 다루는 history가 아니라 carefully situated evidence form이라는 점을 명확히 한다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
Stones 자신의 collective account와 heavily visual career overview를 원하는 reader는 특히 individual memoir 하나를 읽은 뒤 여기서 시작하면 좋다. comparison은 single participant가 others와 narrative space를 나눌 때 story가 어떻게 달라지는지 보여 준다. serious early-history research에는 Wyman을 추가하고, Richards에 specifically 관심 있으면 Life를 더하며, Brian Jones나 Mick Taylor를 연구하는 사람은 그 musician이 later member에게 primarily remembered되지 않는 source를 찾아야 한다. broad official visual history로는 According to the Rolling Stones가 여전히 shelf anchor다.
