Keith Richards가 Keith Richards의 이야기를 쓰고, 수백 페이지에 걸쳐 그 cartoon을 복잡하게 만든다
public version의 Keith Richards는 놀랄 만큼 오래 버티는 상징 몇 개로 압축돼 왔다. guitar, cigarette, open-G tuning, heroin, jewellery, 그리고 normal biological rule이 그에게만 적용되는 것을 잊은 듯한 vaguely supernatural suggestion이다. journalist James Fox와 함께 쓰고 2010년에 출간한 Life가 작동하는 이유는 Richards가 그 cartoon을 즐길 만큼 잘 이해하면서도 그것이 entire story가 되게 두지 않기 때문이다. memoir는 post-war Dartford에서 blues obsession, Rolling Stones 형성, songwriting, fame, addiction, legal trouble, relationship, family, solo work, Mick Jagger와의 긴 partnership을 거친다. standard edition은 500페이지를 훌쩍 넘기므로 outrageous anecdote parade 이상으로 기능할 공간이 충분하다. famous voice 아래에는 musical apprenticeship, collaboration, 그리고 수십 년의 conflict를 지나 somehow intact하게 남은 band를 실제로 구축하는 과정에 대한 serious account가 있다.
Dartford, railway platform, 그리고 record 한 묶음
Richards와 Jagger가 Dartford railway station에서 다시 만난 일은 rock history의 perfect origin scene 중 하나가 되었다. 둘은 childhood에 서로 알고 있었고 teenager로 다시 만났을 때 Jagger는 American blues와 R&B에 대한 shared fascination을 드러내는 record를 들고 있었다. Chuck Berry와 Muddy Waters는 엄청나게 중요했다. 이 detail이 anecdote의 깔끔함보다 중요한 이유는 decadence mythology 이전의 Rolling Stones를 복원하기 때문이다. band는 Black American record를 거의 devotional seriousness로 연구하던 young British musician에게서 시작했다. 처음 ambition은 stadium rock를 invent하거나 dangerous image를 만들거나 Beatles의 rival이 되는 것이 아니었다. 사랑하는 music을 convincing하게 연주하는 것이었다. 그 British scene과 American blues의 만남은 곧 popular music을 바꾸는 동시에 influence, race, commercial reward에 관한 복잡한 질문을 드러내게 된다.
Jagger와 Richards가 permanent centre가 되기 전의 Brian Jones
Brian Jones는 early Rolling Stones에 central했다. group을 assemble하는 데 기여했고 blues direction을 형성했으며 처음에는 leadership role을 차지했다. later history는 Jagger와 Richards가 enduring face가 되었기 때문에 이 사실을 흐릴 수 있다. Andrew Loog Oldham이 original songwriting을 요구하면서 Jagger-Richards partnership이 commercially successful해졌고 internal balance가 바뀌었으며, Jones의 personal problem은 심해지고 role은 줄어들었다. Richards는 Jones의 musical importance를 인정하면서도 behaviour와 decline에 대해서는 harsh하게 쓸 수 있다. 이 contradiction은 testimony로서 가치 있지만 neutral judgement로는 불완전하다. musician 사이 relationship은 Richards가 memoir를 쓰기 훨씬 전부터 difficult했다. 따라서 Bill Wyman의 Stone Alone은 essential counter-perspective다. Wyman이 자동으로 Richards를 correct해서가 아니라 동일한 shifting hierarchy가 band 안의 다른 seat에서는 다르게 보이기 때문이다.

Richards는 Jagger 능력에 generous할 수도 있고 spectacular하게 insulting할 수도 있으며, 때로 그 두 tone 사이가 몇 페이지밖에 떨어져 있지 않다. insult가 memoir의 가장 많이 논의된 passage 일부가 되었지만 더 깊은 story는 mutual dependence다. 두 사람은 반복적으로 compete하고 irritate하고 서로 상처를 주면서도 상대가 제공하는 것을 필요로 한다. Jagger는 Richards가 replace할 수 없는 musical, lyrical, performative, strategic instinct를 가져오고, Richards는 audience가 Stones라고 인식하는 것과 분리할 수 없는 rhythmic·sonic identity를 제공한다. partnership은 conflict가 superficial해서 살아남는 것이 아니라 shared creation의 가치가 다른 group이라면 무너졌을 resentment까지 흡수할 만큼 컸기 때문에 살아남는다.
addiction을 survival advertisement로 만들면 안 된다
Richards의 heroin years는 memoir와 분리할 수 없으며, addiction, arrest, supply network, working touring musician으로 남기 위해 필요한 routine을 그가 묘사하는 방식은 자주 darkly funny하다. 그 storytelling skill은 historical risk를 만든다. Richards는 살아남았지만 comparable drug culture를 통과한 많은 사람은 그렇지 못했고, survival은 extreme behaviour를 danger가 아니라 superhuman resilience의 증거처럼 보이게 만들 수 있다. Life의 consequence에는 legal jeopardy, damaged relationship, dependency를 중심으로 조직된 수년이 포함된다. RetroForge는 humour를 보존하되 lifestyle branding으로 바꿔서는 안 된다. Nellcôte, *Exile on Main St.*와 chaos 아래의 craft
south-of-France Exile on Main St. session은 memoir에서 가장 풍부한 historical passage 중 하나다. Stones는 tax problem 속에서 Britain을 떠났고 Richards가 rent한 villa Nellcôte 주변에 mobile recording setup을 만들었다. heat, irregular hours, drugs, musician이 들락날락하던 working environment로 기억된다. legend는 chaos가 somehow accident로 masterpiece를 만들었다는 듯 album을 보이게 할 수 있다. Richards account는 chaos를 많이 제공하지만 finished record에는 blues, country, gospel, rock and roll에 대한 깊은 knowledge와 highly developed rhythmic identity를 가진 band의 filtering이 들린다. 다른 studio source는 villa romance가 숨긴 labour를 복원하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. strongest reading은 두 생각을 함께 유지한다. Nellcôte는 genuinely disorderly했고, Exile에는 그 disorder를 coherent sound로 만들 능력을 가진 musician과 recording staff가 여전히 필요했다.
relationship과 family는 permanent rebellion fantasy를 끊는다
Anita Pallenberg는 memoir와 wider Stones cultural history에서 중요한 위치를 차지한다. Jones와 Richards 모두와 얽힌 relationship은 수십 년간 gossip을 불러왔지만, 그녀의 intelligence와 influence는 famous man 이야기의 decorative figure 이상이었다. Richards는 이후 Patti Hansen과 long marriage를 만들고 family life를 stabilising force로 쓴다. 이런 section은 tour에서만 존재하는 endlessly intoxicated guitarist cartoon을 깨뜨린다. public image가 permanent rebellion에 의존해도 사람은 나이를 먹고 child를 키우며 domestic life를 만든다. 이 ordinary fact는 memoir가 Keith Richards legend를 조용히 수정하는 방식 중 하나다. X-Pensive Winos는 Jagger가 없을 때 무엇이 남는지 보여 준다
Richards의 solo work는 late-1980s Jagger conflict 때 특히 중요해진다. X-Pensive Winos는 Rolling Stones 밖에서 functioning band identity를 제공했고, memoir 전체에 걸린 question을 practical하게 시험했다. 특히 뛰어난 점

James Fox가 shaping했더라도 narration에는 강한 Richards personality가 남아 musical explanation, insult, memory, self-mythology가 같은 conversation 일부처럼 느껴진다. early blues obsession은 later bad-boy brand 아래의 seriousness를 복원하기 때문에 특히 가치 있고, guitar material은 general reader가 예상하는 것보다 더 practical한 musical insight를 제공한다. Jagger relationship도 strength다. affection, competition, resentment가 함께 존재하도록 두기 때문이다. 마지막으로 chronology는 post-war Britain에서 twenty-first-century stadium rock까지 이어져 individual experience를 잃지 않으면서 enormous cultural span을 제공한다.
한계
autobiography는 narrator가 mythology를 농담할 때도 self-mythology다. Richards에게는 자신의 transgression을 entertaining하게 만들고 opponent를 덜 sympathetic하게 보일 incentive가 있으며, 다른 Stones member는 여러 detail에 이의를 제기해 왔다. Jagger와 Richards 중심 focus는 Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman을 public narrative edge로 밀어낸 기존 hierarchy를 반복할 수도 있다. 따라서 event가 personal recollection에 크게 의존할수록 Stone Alone, According to the Rolling Stones를 counterweight로 사용해야 한다. 위험은 Richards voice를 즐기는 것이 아니라 아무도 더 잘 이야기하지 못한다는 이유로 beautifully told story를 documentary fact라고 가정하는 것이다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
Rolling Stones fan, guitarist, British blues obsession에서 global rock culture로 가는 길에 관심 있는 사람이라면 많은 것을 얻을 수 있다. storytelling이 강해 모든 album을 모르는 general audience에게도 가장 accessible한 Reading Room title 중 하나다. guitar-focused reader는 open-G tuning과 ensemble interaction을, cultural-history reader는 drugs, touring, tax exile, evolving Stones organization을 따라갈 수 있다. 가장 좋은 approach는 Richards version을 full volume으로 즐기되 story 속 다른 사람에게도 memory가 있다는 사실을 기억하는 것이다.
