목소리, 사진, 물리적 기억으로 보는 Laurel Canyon
Michael Walker의 Laurel Canyon이 narrative history이고 Barney Hoskyns의 Hotel California가 musician이 industry가 되는 이야기라면, Harvey Kubernik의 Canyon of Dreams는 그 사이에 놓인 대형 visual scrapbook에 가깝다. Sterling이 2009년에 hardcover로 출간한 이 책은 Henry Diltz와 Nurit Wilde 같은 주요 기록자의 photograph, Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek의 foreword, producer Lou Adler의 afterword를 결합한 heavily illustrated Laurel Canyon music·culture history로 기획됐다. 오랫동안 Los Angeles에 거주해 온 music journalist Kubernik는 extensive interview를 기반으로 multiple-voice approach를 구성한다. 결과적으로 하나의 grand theory를 증명하기보다는 image, memory, overlapping career를 통해 canyon 자체가 축적되도록 한다. 그래서 이 책은 Reading Room에 특히 유용하다. visual history가 prose alone으로는 납작해지기 쉬운 사회적 정보를 어떻게 드러낼 수 있는지 보여 주기 때문이다.
하나의 golden decade가 아니라 80년
publisher description은 Canyon of Dreams를 약 80년에 걸친 Laurel Canyon culture로 frame하며, 우리가 익숙하게 아는 late-1960s·1970s legend보다 훨씬 넓은 chronological horizon을 제공한다. 이 breadth가 중요한 이유는 famous scene이 place의 history 전체를 점령하는 경향이 있기 때문이다. Laurel Canyon은 마치 rock musician이 오기 전이나 singer-songwriter era 이후에는 아무런 의미 있는 cultural life가 없었던 것처럼 “Joni와 Crosby가 살던 곳”으로만 축소될 수 있다. Kubernik의 더 긴 시야는 이런 geographical memory를 일부 복원한다. 유명한 decade가 독자가 알아보는 사람과 image를 만들어 냈기 때문에 중심적인 것은 사실이지만, canyon은 mythology 이전에도 이후에도 존재한다. RetroForge에서는 place history를 첫 famous record가 만들어진 순간부터 시작하지 말아야 한다는 귀중한 reminder가 된다.
photograph는 prose가 힘겹게 설명해야 하는 관계를 즉시 보여 줄 수 있다
visual history는 house, road, clothing, instrument, club, promotional imagery, informal social relationship을 거의 즉시 전달할 수 있다. Henry Diltz는 Southern California music의 visual memory에 특히 중요하고, Nurit Wilde와 다른 photographer는 이후 cultural symbol이 된 사람과 장소에 서로 다른 perspective를 제공한다. 이 작업 덕분에 Canyon of Dreams는 browsing value가 매우 높고 physical book은 part archive, part oral history, part designed object가 된다. 동시에 RetroForge에는 엄격한 rights issue가 생긴다. photograph는 그 자체로 copyrighted work다. AbeBooks의 seller image에 펼친 page가 보인다고 그 interior photograph를 crop하여 website decoration으로 재게시할 권리가 생기는 것은 아니다. Reading Room page는 visual content를 설명하고 축하할 수 있지만 책 자체를 image source로 바꾸면 안 된다.
The Doors는 canyon 이야기 안에 들어오지만 중심이 되지는 않는다
Ray Manzarek의 foreword는 적절한 입구다. The Doors는 Los Angeles mythology와 깊게 연결되어 있고, Jim Morrison의 Laurel Canyon 생활은 "Love Street"를 통해 songwriting을 이 지역과 영구적으로 연결했다. 하지만 Kubernik의 cast는 곧바로 한 band 너머로 확장된다. The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Monkees, Turtles, Canned Heat, Sonny & Cher, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, CSN&Y, Eagles, Carole King 등 수많은 artist가 chronology 전체에 등장한다. 이 다양성은 세 Laurel Canyon 책이 공유하는 가장 중요한 lesson 중 하나를 강화한다. canyon은 genre가 아니었다. 여러 musical tradition, generation, professional network가 겹친 social·geographic intersection이었다. photograph는 서로 다른 era가 실제로 같은 landscape를 점유하는 모습을 reader가 볼 수 있게 하므로 그 밀도를 유난히 선명하게 만든다.
oral history는 memory가 불완전하기 때문에 생생하다
Kubernik가 firsthand recollection을 광범위하게 사용한 덕분에 책에는 강한 personality가 생긴다. participant는 formal archival document로는 거의 불가능한 방식으로 house, session, party, relationship, place의 atmosphere를 묘사할 수 있다. 대가는 oral history가 surveillance footage가 아니라는 점이다. 두 사람이 같은 밤을 다르게 기억할 수 있고, date가 흔들리며, event가 합쳐지고, participant는 자연스럽게 자기 역할을 강조한다. 그렇다고 material이 쓸모없어지는 것은 아니다. comparison을 필수적으로 만들고 memory 자체를 historical subject의 일부로 바꾼다. scene이 social life를 통해 정의된 만큼 사람들이 무엇을 기억하기로 선택하는지도 canyon mythology가 형성되는 방식을 보여 줄 수 있다. 따라서 책임 있는 RetroForge page는 목소리를 존중하면서도 모든 anecdote를 uncontested fact로 조용히 변환해서는 안 된다.
Sonny & Cher에서 CSN&Y까지, 여러 Los Angeles가 겹친다
이 책의 broad chronology는 서로 다른 세대의 Los Angeles popular culture를 나란히 놓는다. Sonny & Cher와 earlier Sunset Strip environment가 The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield와 공존하고, The Doors는 또 다른 darker psychedelic current를 대표한다. singer-songwriter generation은 이 legacy 옆에서 발전하고, CSN&Y는 여러 earlier band를 하나의 유명하게 불안정한 supergroup으로 압축하며, Eagles는 후대의 더 전문적이고 상업적으로 지배적인 Southern California sound를 구현한다. 이 artist를 함께 보면 influence가 straight line보다 dense map에 가깝게 느껴진다. 이것이 아마 이 책의 가장 유용한 historical effect일 것이다. house나 club 안의 한 musician photograph가 여러 career와 scene으로 뻗어나가며 visual archive 자체가 거의 network diagram처럼 작동한다.
bohemian retreat 바로 옆에는 늘 record business가 있다
Laurel Canyon mythology는 흔히 musician이 commercial pressure 밖에서 living room에 앉아 song을 나누는 모습을 강조하지만, Los Angeles는 major record-industry city였다. Lou Adler의 afterword는 producer, label, studio, management가 같은 ecosystem 안에 embedded되어 있었다는 reminder다. canyon의 creative density는 부분적으로 professional infrastructure가 가까이에 있었기 때문에 가능했고, artist는 recording에 자금을 대고 work를 distribute하는 business 바깥에 실제로 살지 않으면서 bohemian identity를 키울 수 있었다. 이 모순은 community를 부정하지 않는다. 오히려 역사적으로 그럴듯하게 만든다. informal과 professional은 처음부터 얽혀 있었고, Kubernik의 visual/oral approach는 Hoskyns가 Hotel California에서 적용한 더 날카로운 rise-and-fall argument 없이도 그 공존을 보여 줄 수 있다.
physical format은 historical experience의 일부다
2009 hardcover는 약 368페이지이며 명시적으로 lavish illustrated object로 기획됐고, 2012 Sterling paperback은 current bibliographic metadata에 따르면 약 384페이지로 확장된다. 이 책은 format이 실제로 추천을 바꾸는 Reading Room title 중 하나다. digital edition도 text와 image를 제공할 수 있지만, large physical copy가 이 책의 존재 이유인 scale과 design을 더 잘 보존한다. good-condition hardcover가 합리적인 가격에 남아 있다면 AbeBooks가 특히 유용한 이유다. image-heavy work에서는 binding wear, damaged page, poor reproduction이 매력을 직접적으로 떨어뜨리기 때문에 condition이 평소보다 더 중요하다. RetroForge는 따라서 physical edition을 neutral delivery mechanism이 아니라 editorial guidance의 일부로 다뤄야 한다.
특히 뛰어난 점
visual immersion이 가장 분명한 강점이다. photograph와 design을 통해 reader는 prose-only history와 다른 방식으로 Laurel Canyon을 이동할 수 있고, multiple-voice structure는 omniscient narrator 한 명 대신 participant의 chorus를 제공한다. Kubernik의 오랜 Los Angeles connection은 broader national study에는 등장하지 않을 수 있는 사람에게 접근할 수 있게 하며, 넓은 chronological range는 책이 또 하나의 Eagles-and-CSN&Y retelling으로만 남는 것을 막는다. 무엇보다 image와 memory의 결합이 canyon의 social density를 손에 잡힐 듯 느끼게 한다. 하나의 thesis를 증명할 필요 없이 voice, place, photograph의 accumulation 자체가 다른 형태의 historical understanding을 만든다.
한계
대형 illustrated oral history는 dense cultural study와 같은 analytical depth를 제공할 수 없다. singer-songwriter industry의 rise에 관한 strong argument를 원하는 reader는 Hoskyns를 선호할 수 있고, neighbourhood의 tightly structured narrative를 원하면 Walker가 더 적합하다. firsthand memory는 서로 모순될 수 있으며 visual book은 모든 차이를 adjudicate하기 위해 멈추지 않는다. RetroForge에서 가장 practical한 limitation은 동시에 가장 중요한 implementation warning이다. attractive interior는 temptation을 만든다. photograph를 설명하고 photographer를 credit하고 그 중요성을 이야기할 수는 있지만, 책 안에 실려 있다는 이유로 Henry Diltz, Nurit Wilde 또는 다른 copyrighted image를 그대로 재게시할 수는 없다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
chronology만큼 rock의 visual culture를 중요하게 생각하는 reader를 위한 책이다. Hotel California, Laurel Canyon의 physical companion으로 특히 잘 작동하며, 하나의 continuous argument 대신 photograph와 participant voice를 중심으로 같은 scene에 세 번째 perspective를 제공한다. photographer, album-art reader, Doors fan, Southern California rock obsessive 모두 분명한 entry point를 갖지만, 더 깊은 가치는 넓다. visual evidence, designed object, memory가 conventional prose narrative로는 근사치만 제시할 수 있는 music history의 dimension을 보존하는 방식을 보여 준다.
