Simon Reynolds는 Shock and Awe를 platform boots, glitter, Top of the Pops montage보다 glam을 훨씬 흥미롭게 만드는 전제에서 시작한다. Alice Cooper는 horror를 theatre로 바꾸고 New York Dolls는 rock-star posing을 pose 자체가 content가 될 때까지 과장했다.
그래서 Shock and Awe는 RetroForge의 anchor text가 된다. glam이 music, fashion, photography, gender, celebrity, nostalgia, technology, authenticity politics를 연결하는 network로 바뀌기 때문이다.
timing은 이 책의 argument 중심에 있다. late 1960s와 연결된 idealism은 political violence, economic uncertainty, cultural exhaustion 속에서 갈라졌고, supposedly authentic한 rock의 visual language도 하나의 convention으로 굳어졌다. long hair, denim, roots, seriousness는 fashion을 거부하는 척하면서 또 다른 uniform이 될 수 있었다.
T. Rex가 foundational position을 차지하는 이유는 Marc Bolan이 acoustic psychedelic world of Tyrannosaurus Rex에서 concise electric pop으로 변신하며 Bowie가 glam의 가장 intellectually famous한 symbol이 되기 전 British glam에 불을 붙였기 때문이다. "Ride a White Swan", "Hot Love", "Get It On"은 simplicity, sensuality, visual sparkle을 결합해 chart의 분위기를 바꿨다.
Bryan Ferry의 persona는 old Hollywood glamour, torch song, highly stylised romance를 끌어오고, Brian Eno는 synthesizer, processing, 눈에 띄게 futuristic한 presence를 가져온다. album sleeve는 fashion imagery를 통해 뒤를 돌아보지만 music은 종종 미래가 고장 난 것처럼 들린다.
Alice Cooper의 theatrical horror, Lou Reed의 post-Velvet Underground solo career, New York Dolls는 Slade, Sweet, T. Rex 또는 그 주변 British chart machinery와 다른 cultural environment에 속한다.
Roxy Music, New York Dolls, 다른 glam performer도 costume, pose, performance를 통해 conventional masculine code를 흔들었다.
Reynolds가 Bowie의 later transformation까지 따라가는 이유는 glam as sound와 glam as method의 차이를 드러내기 때문이다.
punk, pop, twenty-first century까지 이어지는 aftershock
마지막 section은 glam legacy를 punk, post-punk, New Romanticism, goth, hair metal, Prince, Madonna, Suede, Marilyn Manson, electroclash, Lady Gaga, later pop culture까지 추적한다.
책의 규모 덕분에 critically unfashionable하거나 morally difficult한 figure도 Bowie, Bolan, Roxy Music과 함께 존재해 curated hall of approved genius가 아니라 실제 scene을 보여 준다.
