Saint Etienne의 멤버이자 journalist, pop historian이기도 한 그는 early 1950s British singles chart와 45rpm culture의 부상에서 시작해 rock and roll, soul, girl groups, beat music, psychedelia, glam, punk, disco, indie, hip-hop, house, techno, mainstream pop을 지나간다.
Rising, falling, new entry, re-entry, one-hit wonder, Christmas number one은 매주 갱신되는 public story의 반복적인 plot device가 된다.
Older chart culture는 shop, radio, television과 물리적으로 연결되어 buying과 owning the record 자체가 experience 일부였다. Countdown은 shared time을 만들었다.
완벽한 3-minute pop song은 extraordinary한 arrangement, compression, formal intelligence를 가질 수 있으며 side-long progressive suite와는 다른 problem을 해결한다.
Rock and roll은 훨씬 큰 pop machine 안의 하나의 revolution이 된다
Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry와 foundational rock-and-roll figure는 당연히 중심적이지만 Stanley는 rock가 post-war popular music의 유일하게 legitimate한 centre가 되는 것을 막는다. Crooner, teen idol, girl group, country crossover, soul, Brill Building songwriting, easy listening, novelty record가 모두 system 안에 남는다.
The Beatles는 Stanley의 pop-first framework를 시험하기에 완벽하다. Later criticism은 그들을 serious rock의 foundation으로 재조직하면서 "She Loves You" 같은 early record를 Revolver나 Sgt.
The Funk Brothers, Holland–Dozier–Holland, Smokey Robinson, Supremes, Marvin Gaye와 더 넓은 Motown network는 individual excellence를 지우지 않으면서 continuity를 만드는 system 안에서 작동한다.
Top of the Pops, fan culture, chart competition,
Top of the Pops, Smash Hits, music newspaper, radio는 Stanley의 account에서 secondary promotional channel이 아니다.
First Faber publication은 2013년에 나왔다. 2014 Faber revised/reprint edition은 800 pages, ISBN 9780571322404로 catalogued되며 American edition은 Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!: The Story of Pop Music from Bill Haley to Beyoncé라는 title variant를 사용한다.
RetroForge는 US title variant를 search와 discovery에 보존하면서 canonical page는 하나로 유지해야 한다.
