Saint Etienneのmemberでありjournalist / pop historianでもあるStanleyは、1950年代初頭のBritish singles chartと45rpm cultureのriseあたりから始め、rock and roll、soul、girl groups、beat music、psychedelia、glam、punk、disco、indie、hip-hop、house、techno、mainstream popへ進む。

rising、falling、new entry、re-entry、one-hit wonder、Christmas number oneが、毎週renewされるpublic storyのrecurring plot deviceになる。

perfectな3-minute pop songは、side-long progressive suiteとは別problemを解きながら、extraordinary arrangement、compression、formal intelligenceを持ち得る。

Elvis Presley、Little Richard、Chuck Berry、そのほかfoundational rock-and-roll figuresはcentralなままだが、Stanleyはrockをpost-war popular music唯一のlegitimate centreへしない。

The BeatlesはStanleyのpop-first frameworkのperfect testである。 later criticismは彼らをserious rockのfoundationへreorganiseし、"She Loves You"のようなearly recordをRevolverSgt.

Top of the Pops、fan culture、chart competition、そしてglitter、clothing、compact songsがnew ideaをordinary homesへ運ぶefficiencyも見る。

Punkはpop machineをattackし、すぐgreat pop recordsを作り始める

Top of the PopsSmash Hits、music newspapers、radioはsecondary promotional channelsではない。

first Faber publicationは2013年。2014 Faber revised/reprint editionは800 pages、ISBN 9780571322404としてcataloguedされ、American editionはYeah! Yeah! Yeah!: The Story of Pop Music from Bill Haley to Beyoncéというtitle variantを使う。
