Bill Graham은 rock history에서 가장 중요한 non-musician 가운데 한 명이다. 그의 창작적 medium은 song이나 record, studio가 아니라 organised live event였기 때문이다. Room, audience, ticketing, schedule, security, artist, poster, crew, money, benefit, risk, 그리고 apparent chaos를 특정한 시간에 수천 명 앞에서 실제로 작동시키기 위해 필요한 모든 practical system이 그의 영역이었다. Bill Graham Presents는 Graham 자신이 남긴 목소리와, 1991년 helicopter crash로 그가 사망한 뒤 Robert Greenfield가 모은 거대한 oral-history chorus를 통해 그 일을 biography로 바꾼다.

이 구조는 subject와 유난히 잘 맞는다. Graham의 personality가 너무 강해서 conventional first-person autobiography였다면 또 하나의 자기 확장판이 되기 쉬웠다. 난민 아동의 이야기는 성인 promoter에게 rock보다 훨씬 큰 역사를 부여한다

Graham은 1931년 Berlin의 Jewish family에서 태어났지만 authoritative·archival source는 그의 original name을 Wolfgang Grajonca, Wolf/Wolodia 계열 등 여러 형태로 기록한다. RetroForge는 하나의 spelling을 억지로 확정하기보다 이 variation을 보존해야 한다. 논란의 여지가 훨씬 적은 더 큰 biographical arc는 분명하다. 그는 어린 시절 Nazi Europe을 탈출했고 displacement와 큰 상실을 겪은 뒤 결국 United States에 도착해 New York에서 성장했으며, 이후 Korean War에 참전해 Bronze Star를 받았다. 그의 mother는 Holocaust에서 사망했다.

이 사실들이 중요한 이유는 famously intense한 adult personality가 아무 배경 없이 등장하지 않았음을 보여 주기 때문이다. Graham의 anger, control 욕구, fierce protectiveness, incompetence에 대한 intolerance는 종종 abrasive promoter persona만으로 설명된다. Biography는 그 trait를 Fillmore가 존재하기 훨씬 전부터 instability와 survival로 형성된 삶 안에 놓는다. Context는 later behaviour를 면죄하지 않는다. 다만 그 사람이 역사적으로 이해 가능하게 만든다.

San Francisco에는 extraordinary music이 있었지만 그것을 지탱할 professional infrastructure는 충분하지 않았다

Graham은 conventional music-business career가 아니라 theatre와 benefit work, 특히 San Francisco Mime Troupe 주변을 통해 San Francisco counterculture에 들어갔다. 이후 psychedelic scene은 놀라운 속도로 커졌다. Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Chet Helms, Family Dog, poster, light show, Fillmore가 idea는 풍부하지만 그 새로운 규모를 감당할 established system은 부족한 문화 안에서 함께 움직였다.

Graham의 historical importance 일부는 organisation에 있다. 그는 어려운 event를 충분히 reliable하게 만들어 musician, audience, crew가 다음 날 다시 돌아와 반복할 수 있게 했다. LSD, improvisation, psychedelic poster art만큼 romantic하게 들리지는 않지만 scene은 누군가 building을 열고, 사람에게 돈을 지불하고, schedule을 유지하며 practical failure를 처리해야 살아남는다. Counterculture에도 문, 전기, 그리고 fire code를 두고 싸울 사람이 필요했다.

Fillmore는 booking 자체가 curation이 될 수 있기 때문에 cultural institution이 된다

Fillmore Auditorium은 local psychedelic act만으로 San Francisco concert experience를 정의하지 않았다. Graham은 그 group과 blues, soul, jazz, touring performer를 함께 배치해 young rock audience가 기존 taste만 따랐다면 찾지 않았을 musician에게 노출되도록 했다. Programming은 commercial booking인 동시에 cultural curation이 될 수 있었다.

Economics와 power relation이 magically equal했던 것은 아니고 Graham의 professional presentation 집착은 countercultural looseness와 직접 충돌할 수 있었다. 바로 그 tension 때문에 history가 흥미롭다. 같은 audience는 spontaneity를 사랑하면서도 scheduling에 집착하는 누군가에게 의존할 수 있었다. Venue는 listener가 individual artist뿐 아니라 그 room의 programming 자체를 믿기 시작할 때 identity를 얻는다. 결국 Fillmore라는 이름은 그날 lineup을 읽기 전부터 cultural meaning을 갖게 됐다.

Graham과 Grateful Dead는 commerce 대 counterculture라는 이분법이 거짓임을 보여 준다

Graham과 Grateful Dead의 긴 relationship은 culture를 대규모로 어떻게 운영해야 하는가에 대한 하나의 argument처럼 기능한다. Dead는 improvisation, communal value, conventional show structure에 대한 비교적 느슨한 태도를 대표할 수 있었고, Graham은 professionalism, start time, performance responsibility, audience에 대한 promoter 의무를 강하게 믿었다. 그들은 반복해서 충돌했고 또 반복해서 함께 일했다.

Useful한 historical lesson은 어느 쪽도 실제로 economics 바깥에 있지 않았다는 것이다. Dead도 crew, venue, touring infrastructure가 필요했고 Graham 역시 ticket cost와 schedule을 이해한다고 anti-art였던 것은 아니다. 그들의 갈등은 누가 culture를 scale에서 조직하고, 누가 비용을 부담하며, artist가 audience에게 어떤 obligation을 갖고, supposedly liberated scene과 얼마만큼의 control이 양립할 수 있는지에 관한 것이다. Backstage에서 누가 political vocabulary를 쓰지 않더라도 충분히 political한 질문이다.

Fillmore East는 venue identity가 대륙을 가로질러 이동할 수 있음을 보여 준다

Graham이 1968년 New York에 Fillmore East를 열면서 concept는 다른 city로 이동해 당대 rock의 핵심 무대 가운데 하나가 된다. Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix, Who, Grateful Dead, Miles Davis 등 수많은 artist가 그곳과 연결되었고, venue name 자체가 discography 안으로 들어갔다. Room은 microphone이 우연히 놓인 address가 아니라 live recording identity 일부가 될 수 있었다.

이 변화가 놀라운 이유는 venue가 trusted cultural brand가 될 수 있음을 보여 주기 때문이다. Artist는 그 stage를 원하고 audience는 booking을 믿으며 recording은 그곳에서 일어났다는 사실 때문에 추가 meaning을 얻는다. Graham의 work는 그 expansion을 따라 움직였고, major rock presentation이 industrial scale에서 실제로 functioning하게 만든 professionalisation 일부가 되었다.

이 과정은 counterculture가 corporation이 되는 순간이라고 단순하게 frame하기 쉽지만 practical reality는 훨씬 복잡하다. Scale에는 consequence가 있다. Stadium은 goodwill만으로 운영되지 않으며 professional system은 audience와 artist를 보호하는 동시에 power를 집중시킬 수도 있다. Promoter는 increasingly infrastructure designer가 되고, decision은 concert가 열리는지 여부뿐 아니라 어떤 종류의 concert가 가능한지까지 형성한다.

Benefit concert는 같은 machinery가 다른 목적에도 쓰일 수 있음을 보여 준다

Graham은 Live Aid, Amnesty International의 Conspiracy of Hope 같은 event를 포함해 political·humanitarian fundraising을 위해 대규모 concert organisation을 반복해서 활용했다. 이 history는 promoter를 단지 hard-nosed businessman으로 보는 caricature를 복잡하게 만든다. Artist를 화나게 할 수 있던 control 욕구가 동시에 extraordinary하게 복잡한 benefit를 가능하게 만들기도 했다.

그렇다고 commercial infrastructure가 pure altruism으로 변하는 것은 아니다. Logistical expertise가 다른 목적에 redirect될 수 있음을 보여 준다. Reading Room에서는 live-production history를 social action과 연결하면서 어느 쪽도 낭만화하지 않는 데 유용하다. Thousands of people, international broadcast, 복잡한 schedule이 involved되면 idealism도 organisation을 필요로 한다.

Oral history는 Graham이 자신에 대한 마지막 말을 독점하지 못하게 한다

책의 가장 큰 structural strength는 Graham의 강한 voice가 모든 page를 통제하지 않는다는 데 있다. Greenfield는 100명이 넘는 surrounding voice를 포함해 employee가 그를 묘사하고, artist가 불평하고, friend가 defend하며, associate가 특정 memory를 challenge하게 한다. Voice가 많다고 objective truth가 자동으로 생기는 것은 아니다. Oral history는 contradiction을 만들고, forceful personality에게는 바로 그 contradiction이 필요할 수 있다.

Graham의 personality 역시 polyphonic structure 안에서도 narrative를 휘게 할 만큼 강할 수 있다. 이런 limitation은 이 책을 concert business의 complete history가 아니라 unusually rich promoter biography로 규정한다.
