Please Kill Me는 특정 music scene에는 oral history가 거의 이상적인 형식이 될 수 있음을 보여 준 대표적인 책 가운데 하나다. Legs McNeil과 Gillian McCain은 punk 위에 서서 하나의 polished explanation을 제시하지 않는다. scene이 스스로 논쟁하기 시작할 때까지 voice를 쌓는다. Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Nico, Richard Hell, Patti Smith, Dee Dee and Joey Ramone, Debbie Harry, David Johansen, Wayne Kramer, Danny Fields, Malcolm McLaren과 수많은 musician, manager, photographer, participant가 등장한다. 그들의 testimony는 funny하고 vicious하고 self-serving하며 contradictory하고, 때로는 뜻밖에 moving하다.

Grove Press가 1996년에 처음 출간한 이후 anniversary edition을 통해 책은 확장됐고, 2016 twentieth-anniversary edition에는 새 photograph와 저자들의 afterword가 추가됐다. RetroForge의 일반 추천은 이 version이 가장 깔끔하다. 하지만 진짜 중요성은 method에 있다. Punk는 하나의 manifesto가 지배하는 movement가 아니라, memory가 서로 겹치면서도 하나의 official origin story로 정착하지 않는 사람들의 network로 나타난다. 그 기억 사이의 noise 자체가 history 일부다.

chronology는 아직 누구도 안전하게 punk라고 부를 수 없던 시기부터 시작한다

이 책의 가장 큰 공헌 중 하나는 story를 1960s까지 뒤로 밀어 넣는 것이다. Velvet Underground, Stooges, MC5, Warhol's Factory, Detroit, New York은 CBGB가 후대 audience가 알아보는 상징이 되기 전에 등장한다. mid-1970s punk가 안정적인 이름을 얻을 때쯤에는 이미 그 sound, attitude, social network의 precursor가 존재했고 later scene과 직접적인 human connection도 있었다.

이 점이 중요한 이유는 British punk mythology가 1976을 Year Zero처럼 만들 수 있기 때문이다. Please Kill Me는 Sex Pistols, Clash, 그 뒤의 specifically British explosion의 중요성을 부정하지 않으면서 그런 단순화에 저항한다. later term "proto-punk"가 존재하는 이유는 retrospective하게 보이는 continuity를 설명할 방법이 필요했기 때문이다. McNeil과 McCain은 이 continuity를 musical할 뿐 아니라 social하게 만든다. 사람들은 earlier band를 실제로 봤고 participant를 알았으며 idea를 새로운 room으로 옮겼다.

Velvet Underground influence는 abstract family tree가 아니라 사람을 통해 이동한다

Velvet Underground의 original commercial reach는 후대 reputation의 규모에 비해 제한적이었다. Lou Reed의 urban writing, John Cale의 drone, Moe Tucker의 unconventional drumming, Factory context는 conventional beauty를 거부하면서도 enormous artistic ambition을 가질 수 있는 music의 model을 제공했다. Please Kill Me는 influence를 record 사이 resemblance가 아니라 실제로 살아 있는 transmission으로 보여 주기 때문에 가치 있다.

누군가는 band를 듣고, 누군가는 Warhol's circle을 알고, 누군가는 Max's Kansas City에 있었고, 또 누군가는 later project로 attitude를 가져간다. 이것이 oral history의 큰 장점이다. cultural permission이 이동하는 human route를 드러낼 수 있다. 따라서 Velvet Underground에서 punk로 이어지는 line은 decades 뒤 critic가 그린 arrow가 아니라, later testimony가 messy할 수 있어도 proximity 자체가 중요한 overlapping lives의 집합이 된다.

Detroit는 proto-punk 안에도 서로 양립할 수 없는 정치와 aesthetic이 이미 존재했음을 보여 준다

Stooges와 MC5는 이 책의 prehistory에서 핵심적인 위치를 차지하며, 서로의 차이는 proto-punk가 하나의 unified recipe가 되는 것을 막는다. Iggy Pop은 physical performance와 personal history 자체가 후대 punk와 연결된 danger를 구현하기 때문에 책에서 가장 기억에 남는 testimony 일부를 제공한다. MC5는 high-energy rock를 더 explicit한 political rhetoric, revolutionary culture와 연결하는 다른 route를 보여 준다.

두 impulse는 같은 것이 아니다. later punk mythology에는 nihilism과 politics, individual self-destruction과 organised opposition이 모두 들어가지만 하나의 안정된 ideological programme이 된 적은 없다. Detroit가 essential한 이유는 precisely 이런 복잡성 때문이다. loudness, aggression, confrontation은 서로 전혀 다른 cultural end를 위해 쓰일 수 있었고, punk에는 이름 붙여지기 전부터 하나의 essence가 기다리고 있었던 것이 아니다.

New York Dolls는 glam spectacle을 punk wreckage로 바꾼다

New York Dolls는 또 하나의 필수 bridge다. clothing과 theatrical presentation은 glam을 punk와 직접 연결하고, raw rock and roll은 progressive rock의 long-form complexity를 거부하면서도 show-business excess를 버리지는 않는다. Johnny Thunders와 Jerry Nolan은 이후 New York punk 주변 drug mythology의 중심 인물이 되고, band의 commercial failure는 chart success로는 얻기 어려웠을 역사적 생산성을 나중에 갖게 된다.

Malcolm McLaren의 involvement는 특히 중요한 transatlantic connection을 만든다. 이후 Sex Pistols와의 작업이 idea, styling, mythology가 New York과 London 사이에서 이동하도록 했기 때문이다. 그렇다고 British punk가 America에서 그대로 import되었다는 뜻은 아니다. Please Kill Me는 scene을 rebellion patent를 놓고 경쟁하는 nation이 아니라 서로 영향을 주는 network로 볼 때 가장 유용하다.

CBGB의 중요성은 매우 다른 band를 물리적으로 같은 장소에 놓았다는 데 있다

CBGB는 logo가 club에 대한 지식과 분리되어 움직일 수 있을 정도로 commodified되었다. oral history는 venue를 다시 social·physical context 안으로 돌려놓는다. Television, Patti Smith Group, Ramones, Blondie, Richard Hell, Talking Heads는 하나의 scene에서 겹치지만 서로의 sound는 크게 다르다. "punk"라는 단어는 처음에는 후대 genre definition보다 훨씬 느슨한 범위를 덮었다.

Ramones의 brevity와 speed는 Television의 extended guitar interplay와 다르고, Patti Smith는 poetry와 rock performance를 결합하며, Blondie는 pop을 흡수하고, Talking Heads는 또 다른 art-school·downtown sensibility를 통해 움직인다. venue는 하나의 sound를 제조하지 않으면서 proximity와 audience crossover를 만든다. contradiction은 이 책의 가장 큰 즐거움이자 가장 큰 factual hazard다

conventional historian은 보통 testimony를 비교하고 disputed event를 해결하려 한다. McNeil과 McCain은 여러 version을 서로 옆에 그대로 두는 경우가 많다. 누가 무엇을 했는지, 누가 누구와 잤는지, 누가 phrase를 만들었는지, 누가 idea를 훔쳤는지, 유명한 순간에 누가 있었는지가 몇 page 안에서 argument로 변할 수 있다.

이 때문에 memory가 consensus로 polish되지 않은 conflict 형태로 등장하며 책은 짜릿해진다. 동시에 Please Kill Me를 factual source로 사용할 때는 주의가 필요하다. quotation은 participant가 그렇게 말했거나 기억했다는 사실은 증명하지만 underlying event가 정확히 그 방식으로 일어났다는 것을 자동으로 증명하지는 않는다. RetroForge는 disputed claim을 재사용할 때 attribution을 보존하고, copy가 더 멋있다는 이유로 가장 자극적인 anecdote 하나를 선택해 사실처럼 만들지 않아야 한다.

lurid story가 entertainment로 작동하는 동안 human cost는 한 문단 정도 사라질 수 있다

Drugs, sex, violence, poverty, death가 책 전반에 흐르고 participant는 destructive behaviour를 놀라운 comic timing으로 묘사하는 경우가 많다. 이런 honesty가 이 oral history를 계속 읽히게 하는 이유 일부다. 동시에 survivor가 punchline을 잘 전달하기 때문에 self-destruction이 재미있게 느껴지는 불편한 효과도 만들 수 있다.

독자는 story 속 여러 사람이 죽게 된다는 것을 안다. 어떤 이는 젊게 죽고, 어떤 이는 긴 addiction 끝에 죽는다. 그래서 같은 anecdote가 scene mythology의 entertaining한 일부이면서 동시에 사람을 소비할 수 있는 culture의 evidence가 될 수 있다. 책임 있는 RetroForge article은 이 긴장을 보존해야 한다. funniest horror story만 캐내서는 안 된다. chaos가 중요한 이유 일부는 실제 consequence가 있었기 때문이다.

Britain은 punk라는 말을 세계적으로 만들면서 즉시 또 다른 origin dispute를 시작한다

후반부는 Malcolm McLaren, Sex Pistols, broader punk explosion을 통해 Britain으로 이동한다. 여기서 terminology 자체가 contested된다. McNeil은 New York의 Punk magazine과 연결되어 있었고, British media는 곧 이 단어를 자체 political condition, fashion, public confrontation을 가진 매우 visible한 youth movement에 적용했다.

Please Kill Me의 American centre 때문에 transatlantic relationship은 특정 angle에서 보이며, dedicated UK history에 비하면 British punk의 interpretive depth는 당연히 얕다. Jon Savage의 England's Dreaming이 이상적인 companion이 되는 이유다. British scene을 자체 조건으로 복원하기 때문이다. 두 책을 함께 읽으면 어느 쪽도 "punk"라는 단어를 독점하지 못하고, cultural label이 다른 national environment에 들어가 얼마나 빠르게 다시 발명되는지 볼 수 있다.

anniversary edition은 object를 확장하지만 source type을 바꾸지는 않는다

original Grove Press book은 1996년에 424 pages로 나왔다. 1997 Abacus edition은 additional testimony를 광고했고, Grove의 tenth-anniversary edition은 2006년에 afterword와 추가 material을 포함해 뒤따랐다. twentieth-anniversary edition은 2016년에 나왔고 448 pages로 표기되며 new photograph와 McNeil·McCain의 afterword를 더했다.

digital metadata는 상당히 messy할 수 있고 서로 다른 record가 크게 다른 pagination을 보여 주기도 한다. 따라서 RetroForge는 title 전체에 universal page count 하나를 붙이지 말고 exact format에 page count를 연결해야 한다. 일반 독자에게 추천 자체는 간단하다. 2016 twentieth-anniversary edition은 여전히 흔하게 구할 수 있는 책을 collector hunt로 만들지 않으면서 mature하고 accessible한 version을 제공한다.

특히 뛰어난 점

voice가 이 책의 결정적인 성취다. 모든 사람이 historian 한 사람의 prose로 번역되지 않기 때문에 class, vanity, humour, resentment가 audible하게 남는다. Velvet Underground에서 Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls로 이어지는 prehistory는 특히 가치 있다. decades 뒤에 만들어진 genre theory가 아니라 실제 relationship을 통해 scene formation을 보여 주기 때문이다.

cast가 enormous한데도 놀랄 만큼 readable하다는 점도 장점이다. 더 중요하게는 historical lesson 하나를 가르친다. contradiction을 항상 제거할 필요는 없다. 때로 disagreement 자체가 scene이 자신의 origin을 어떻게 기억하고 mythologise하는지를 보여 주는 evidence다. 이것이 Please Kill Me를 RetroForge가 oral testimony와 independently verified fact를 구분하는 이유를 설명하는 최고의 사례 가운데 하나로 만든다.

한계

Oral history는 verified transcript of reality가 아니다. participant는 exaggerate하고, forget하고, perform하고, story를 반복하고, old score를 settle한다. charismatic voice는 equally important했을 수 있는 quieter participant를 가릴 수도 있다. lurid material은 drugs와 personal catastrophe가 더 강한 anecdote를 만들기 때문에 musicianship과 creative method에 대한 discussion을 압도할 위험도 있다.

American centre 때문에 British punk는 dedicated UK history보다 cultural interpretation이 얕다. 이런 limitation은 책의 중요성을 낮추지 않는다. 올바른 사용법을 규정한다. attribution하고 비교해야 하는 vivid testimony network이지 unquestioned factual database가 아니다.

이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?

punk, proto-punk, Velvet Underground, 1970s New York에 관심 있는 사람은 essential에 가깝게 볼 만하다. Bockris의 Lou Reed biography 다음에 특히 좋다. individual life 하나가 influence가 이동한 much larger social network로 갑자기 열리기 때문이다. 그 다음 Jon Savage를 읽으면 British story가 더해지고, "punk는 어디서 시작했는가?"라는 단순해 보이는 질문이 어떤 one-line answer보다 훨씬 흥미로워진다.
