같은 Kinks에 거의 동의하지 않는 사람들로 만든 Kinks biography
independent Kinks biography를 쓰는 일은 유난히 어렵다. contradiction이 band history의 주변 요소가 아니라 material 자체이기 때문이다. Ray Davies는 fiction, evasive wit, self-analysis를 통해 자신의 past를 쓴다. Dave Davies는 또 하나의 intensely personal version을 갖고 있다. Mick Avory, Pete Quaife, manager, partner, later musician도 서로 다른 grievance와 loyalty를 통해 event를 기억한다. career 역시 equally uncooperative하다. violence, management trouble, American touring ban, personnel change, abrupt commercial reversal, 그리고 British pop에서 가장 rich한 songwriting catalogue 중 하나가 함께 존재한다. Nick Hasted의 You Really Got Me: The Story of The Kinks는 2011년 Omnibus Press에서 출간됐고, 모든 contradiction을 해결할 수 있다고 가장하지 않으면서 이 contested material을 coherent band history로 바꾸려 한다. 그래서 X-Ray의 natural external companion이며 chronology를 self-mythology보다 먼저 원하는 reader에게는 arguably stronger first book이다.

한계
Kinks는 substantial biography 하나가 comfortably 담을 수 있는 것보다 더 많은 incident를 만들어 내고, 일부 reader는 later decade를 줄이고 classic era에 더 많은 space를 원할 수 있다. 하지만 Hasted의 long chronology 자체가 book을 distinctive하게 하므로 그것을 줄이면 한 preference를 해결하면서 다른 strength를 파괴한다. personality도 elusive하게 남는다. interview는 decades 동안 incompatible account를 만든 사람들에게 agree하라고 강요할 수 없기 때문이다. independent biography는 testimony와 document를 compare할 수 있지만 contested human relationship을 mathematical proof로 바꿀 수는 없다.

broad Kinks biography 하나를 원하는 사람은 여기서 시작한 뒤 X-Ray를 함께 또는 이후에 읽어 Hasted가 reconstruct한 history 내부에서 Ray Davies의 literary self-portrait를 경험하면 좋다. famous single은 알지만 extraordinary album sequence, commercial setback, later reinvention까지 탐색하지 않은 reader에게 특히 효과적이다.
