Tim BrookesのGuitar: An American Lifeはinventorでも、有名playerでも、landmark recordingでもなく、壊れたluggageから始まる。flightの後、Brookesがguitar caseを開けると、20年以上弾いてきたinstrumentがひどく損傷している。妻はdream guitarへ買い替えればいいと提案する。寛大なideaだが、すぐより難しい問いが生まれる。何がguitarをdream instrumentにするのか。そしてなぜ一つのwooden objectがこれほど大きなemotional weightを持ち得るのか。

その探求は最終的にVermontのluthier Rick Davisへつながり、彼がcustom acoustic guitarを作ることになる。Brookesはそのconstruction storyと、American cultureの中でinstrumentが歩んだselective historyを交互に置き、wood、craftsmanship、blues、Hawaiian steel、manufacturers、politics、personal attachmentを同じnarrativeへ入れる。Grove Pressが2005年に刊行した本書は、周囲のband-gear booksより意図的に静かな本である。serial numberより、それがidentifyするobjectを人がなぜ大切にするのかに関心がある。

Custom buildが本全体のphysical clockになる

Davisがinstrumentを作る過程を見ることで、Brookesのhistoryには触れられる構造が生まれる。woodが選ばれ、cutされ、bracedされ、shapedされ、joinedされ、finishedされ、adjustedされる。catalogue photographではなくmaterialからguitarが現れる様子をreaderは見ることになる。このprocessはindustrial electric-guitar historyの隣で特に示唆的だ。acoustic constructionではsubtleなphysical judgementが異様によく見えるからである。

guitarはknown planに従って作られても、wood、thickness、brace shaping、feelをめぐる数千の小decisionへ依存する。Brookesがそのchoiceへ惹かれることでluthieryはromantic mysticismにならない。craftとは蓄積されたjudgementに支えられたphysical workである。custom instrumentはmass productionへのnarrative counterweightになるが、handmade guitarがfactory instrumentより本質的にauthenticだと宣言する必要はない。

Guitarの"American life"はAmericanではないinstrumentから始まる

subtitleはAmericaがguitarを発明したと主張していない。Brookesの関心は、はるかに古いEuropean / global ancestryを持つinstrumentがAmerican cultureの中で何度もidentityを変えたことにある。parlour guitar、folk companion、blues instrument、Hawaiian slide guitar、jazz tool、cowboy prop、protest symbol、rock weaponが、一つの長いtransformationへ含まれる。

このadaptabilityこそguitarのextraordinary symbolic powerのkeyかもしれない。Americaはbasic objectを作ったわけではないが、 successive American musical culturesが、そのobjectが何を意味するかを繰り返しreinventした。Brookesのthematic approachは、一つのinstrument familyがsocial worldを渡り歩き、どのgenreにも永久所有されないことを見せるのに特に優れている。

Hawaiian steelはelectrificationへつながる隠れたrouteの一つ

Joseph KekukuとHawaiian steel-guitar techniqueの発展は、目立ちにくいが決定的なhistorical pathの一つを作る。string上をsteel barでslideさせて生まれるsinging toneはmainlandでも非常にpopularになり、country music、lap steel、pedal steel、そして最終的にはamplified guitarのearly marketへ流れ込んだ。

これは重要だ。guitar historyはelectricityがbluesとrockだけを通ってやって来たように語られがちだからである。Hawaiian musicもgreater volumeへの強いpractical demandを生み、early Rickenbacker lap steelsは直接そのlineageに属する。Brookesがこのrouteを追うことでhistoryは文化的にもtechnicalにもよりcompleteになり、instrumentがregional musicを通ってmanufacturing innovationへ移動する過程も見える。

Bluesはportabilityがなぜ重要かを示す

guitarのportabilityは、一つのobjectだけでperformance全体を支える必要があるmusicianに特に有用だった。bluesではvoiceとguitarだけで完全なmusical worldを作れ、instrumentはrhythm、accompaniment、独立したmelodic detailまで担える。Robert Johnsonは当然mythologyに登場するが、Brookesのより広い関心は一人のcanonical figureよりinstrumentのroleにある。

このthematic methodはstrengthであると同時にlimitationでもある。本書はcomplete blues historyではなく、そのつもりもない。代わりに、なぜguitarがsinger、itinerant performer、大ensembleなしで活動するmusicianと何度も結び付くのかを問う。portabilityはphysicalであるだけでなくculturalにもなる。簡単に運べるinstrumentはcommunity、performance context、personal identityの間を異様な自由さで移動できる。

MartinとAmerican acoustic guitarのstandardisation

C. F. MartinのdevelopmentはAmerican steel-string acousticsのhistoryで中心的である。body size、bracing、constructionの変化、そしてdreadnoughtのriseが特に重要だ。volume、durability、musical preferenceへのsolutionとして始まったdesignがあまりに成功したため、later playerはそれをhistorical choiceとして見なくなり、「acoustic guitarとはこういうshapeだ」と思うようになった。

これもBrookesが繰り返す強いideaの一つである。normalityはdecisionを隠す。obviousに見えるfeatureも、かつて誰かがinventし、testし、userがacceptしなければならなかった。custom-build narrativeはそのpointを補強する。readerが一つのguitarがdeliberate choiceによって形になるところを見る一方、historical chaptersではearlier choiceがindustry standardへ変わる様子を見る。

Politicsはmusical objectをportable signへ変える

Woody Guthrieの有名な"This Machine Kills Fascists" inscriptionは、guitarがinstrumentであると同時にpolitical imageになる最も分かりやすいexampleの一つである。folk musiciansはlabour、civil-rights、anti-war contextへguitarを持ち込み、later rock cultureはspecific politicsが大きく変わっても、guitarがresistanceをsymboliseできるというbroader ideaを受け継いだ。

instrumentのmeaningは矛盾している。working people、individual freedom、teenage sexuality、commercial advertising、patriotism、anti-establishment rebellionのどれも表せる。Brookesはそれらをreconcileする必要がない。そのcontradictionこそguitarをculturally durableにしている。six stringsは異なるAmericaを投影するには非常に使いやすいsurfaceなのである。

身体とinstrumentのrelationshipがmythologyの一部になる

guitarのphysical designはstage symbolismに異様によく適している。torsoの前に吊られ、playerと一緒に動き、contextによってintimate、aggressive、sexualに見えるperformance gestureを可能にする。rock cultureはそのassociationを増幅し、guitarはyouth、masculinity、rebellion、desireのvisual codeからほとんど切り離せなくなった。

Brookesはこのsymbolismをguitar poseの冗談ではなくinstrumentのcultural lifeの一部として扱う。designが重要なのは、あるobjectが他よりも身体とtheatrically interactionするからだ。guitarはwearでき、gripでき、身体をかがめ、持ち上げ、smashし、burnできる。このvisual possibilityは、20世紀popular musicでも最もdominantなimageの一つになった理由の一部を説明する。

Hendrixがguitarを燃やす行為が成立するのは、objectがすでにequipment以上の意味を持つから

BrookesはJimi HendrixによるMontereyのguitar burningをsymbolic excessの最も明快なexampleの一つとして使う。その行為が強く響くのは、audienceがすでにguitarをmusicianのextensionとして理解しているからだ。したがってdestructionは、ordinary stage objectへ火をつけるのとは違い、sacrificial、theatrical、dangerousに見える。

Pete TownshendはすでにdestructionをThe Whoのperformance languageの一部にしており、HendrixのMonterey actはpsychedelic rockを代表するimageの一つになった。このincidentはBrookesのpersonal instrument storyをbroader cultural historyへ結ぶ。人々はguitarへidentityとmeaningを強く付与するため、それを壊すことが単なるequipment damageではなくpublic ritualになる。

Custom luthierはindustrial mass cultureへのcounterpointになるが、factoryを否定しない

historical narrativeが広がる一方で、Rick Davisは一人のために一つのguitarを作り続ける。そのstructureがguitarをglobal mass-market commodityとして見ることと、handmade personal objectとして見ることの間に有用なtensionを作る。manufacturerはstandardiseし、luthierはcustomiseする。playerは両方を愛せる。

Brookesは一方をauthentic、もう一方をsoullessと宣言する必要がない。factoryもexceptional guitarを作れるし、custom instrumentには一人のmakerのchoiceと一人のplayerのwishがvisibleに残る。meaningはどちらにもuseを通じて付着する。instrumentへの愛情をconsumer fetishismにもmystical craftsmanshipにも還元しないところに、本書のemotional intelligenceがある。

特に優れている点

central strengthはaccessibilityである。personal questがhistoryをmuseum tourにせず、luthiery chaptersがconstructionをphysicalに理解させる。またstandard electric-rock routeを越えてHawaii、folk culture、blues、American symbolismへspaceを与え、guitar historyを広げる。

Brookesはmusicianとして書くためinstrumentへのattachmentがoutsider anthropologyのように感じられない。specification-heavy gear bookに疲れたreaderには、このbatchで最もhumanなrouteかもしれない。historyが大きくなってもquestionはpersonalなままだ。

注意点

historical surveyは意図的にselectiveで、exhaustive chronologyよりpersonality / themeでorganiseされている。electric-guitar developmentはPlay It Loudほどcomprehensiveではなく、American frameのためglobal guitar traditionは中心外になる。exact brand/model/provenance informationを求めるならspecialist referenceが必要だ。

こうしたlimitは本書のpersonalityの一部である。Brookesがより関心を持つのは、なぜguitarが人へmatterするのかであり、世界で最もcompleteなtechnical family treeを作ることではない。そのbargainを受け入れるreaderには、selectivityはfrustrationよりstrengthになる可能性が高い。
