12本のlandmark guitarと、電気が素晴らしい騒ぎを生むと人々が気付いていった一世紀
Brad TolinskiとAlan di PernaのPlay It Loudは、electric guitarを同時にいくつものものとして扱う。industrial product、visual designの一形態、amplificationのtool、commodity、status object、そしてpopular musicが獲得した最も強力なsymbolの一つである。本書はearly amplification、Leo Fender、Les Paul、Stratocaster、blues、The Beatles、Dylanのelectric turn、Hendrix、heavy rock、Eddie Van Halen、Japanese manufacturing、later guitar cultureへ進み、landmark instrumentsとその周囲の人々を使って広大なhistoryを読みやすく整理する。Doubledayから2016年に刊行された後、本書はMetropolitan Museum of ArtのPlay It Loud exhibitionのtitleとconceptual territoryの多くを提供した。このconnectionは本書最大の強みをよく表している。electric guitarはsoundを出すmachineであるだけではない。そのshape、material、brand、有名userによって、20世紀のmusicがどう聞こえるかだけでなく、どう見えるかまで変えたcultural objectなのである。
Solid body以前からamplificationはguitarの役割を変え始めていた
electric guitarはTelecaster、Stratocaster、Les Paulから始まったわけではない。solid-body instrumentがrock iconになるずっと前から、jazz、Hawaiian music、その他のensemble settingにいるguitaristは一つのpractical limitationに直面していた。acoustic projectionである。hornsやdrumsはguitarを簡単にかき消してしまい、playerはsingle-note lineやrhythmic detailをより大きなvolumeで聞かせる方法を探した。pickupとamplified archtopは、rock and rollが文化categoryとして存在する以前からinstrumentのmusical roleを変え始めていた。
Tolinskiとdi Pernaの広いchronologyが有用なのは、後世のrock mythologyがelectric guitarをrebellionのために最初から作られたobjectのように見せるからだ。現実にはamplificationは、musicianが日常的なperformance problemを解決しようとしたところから生まれた。しかしsoundをelectrical signalへ変えられるようになると、traditional resonating bodyをinstrumentのcentral engineering principleに保つ必要がなくなり、designerにははるかに広い可能性が開いた。そのshiftが、後にFender、Gibson、その他多数が入るdesign spaceを作った。
Rickenbackerの"Frying Pan"は、modern guitarのshapeが必然ではなかったことを示す
初期のcommercially successful electric instrumentsには、Rickenbackerの有名な"Frying Pan"のようなlap-steel guitarが含まれる。円形bodyと長いneckは、多くの人が"electric guitar"と聞いて思い浮かべるobjectとは驚くほど異なる。その違いは歴史的に重要である。designerは特定playing styleの特定problemを解いていたのであり、一つのpredetermined final formへ向かって進んでいたわけではない。
solid constructionはfeedbackをcontrolする助けになり、magnetic pickupはstring vibrationをelectrical signalへ変換したため、大きなacoustic sound boxから独立してamplificationできるようになった。このseparationが可能になるとguitar designは急速にindustrialになり得た。見慣れたsolid-body instrumentは突然の一発明ではなく、experimentのprocessから生まれた。Play It Loudは、FenderとGibsonの後の成功によって彼らのsolutionが必然に見える以前、いくつもの未来があり得たperiodを戻すことに特に優れている。
Leo Fenderはmanufacturing logicをmusical possibilityへ変える
Leo Fenderはvirtuoso guitaristとしてではなく、electronics、repair、practical observationからinstrument designへ入った。後にTelecasterとなるinstrumentにはそのmindsetが明確に現れる。bolt-on neck、比較的simpleなsolid body、replaceable components、straightforward constructionによって、traditional carved instrumentよりmanufactureとserviceが容易だった。一部にはほとんど無骨に見えたutilitarian designが、使用時には最大の長所の一つになる。
playerはそのindustrial designがmusically何をできるかを発見していった。country guitaristはbright attackを活用し、blues / rock playerはpowerとclarityを見つけ、punkからalternative musicまでのlater generationはdurabilityとdirectnessを受け入れた。Telecasterは本書のcentral themeを示す。manufacturing decisionは、playerがその中へexpressive useを繰り返し発見することでmusical styleになり得る。instrumentのcultural identityはfactoryを出た後に書かれる。
Les Paulは別routeを示す。inventorでありpublic figureでもある
Les PaulはFenderとは非常に異なる位置にいた。すでに有名guitarist、entertainer、recording innovatorだったからだ。solid-body conceptとmultitrack recordingを実験し、最終的にGibsonは急速に変わるsolid-body marketへ対抗するguitarへ彼のnameを付けた。そのinstrumentはtraditional Gibson craftsmanshipとvisual languageをamplified musicのpractical needsと組み合わせ、Telecasterのstripped industrial simplicityとはほぼ反対のcultural imageを作った。
Les Paul modelは後にhumbucking pickups、sustain、Eric ClaptonやJimmy Pageのようなplayerとのassociationによって独自のmythologyを獲得した。Tolinskiとdi Pernaはそのstoryを一世紀規模のpanoramaへ置き、Ian S. PortのThe Birth of LoudはFenderとLes Paulをめぐるpersonality、company、rivalryへfocusを狭める。二冊はきれいに補完する。一冊がaerial viewを、もう一冊がclose-upを提供する。
Stratocasterはergonomicsをfuturismへ変える
Stratocasterはcontoured body、three pickups、vibrato system、1950年代には異様にmodernに見え、その後もなぜかmodernに見え続けるshapeによってFenderのdesign languageを拡張した。Buddy Hollyがtelevisionへ登場したことでaspirational objectとなり、surf playerはclarityとvibratoから別languageを発見し、後にはJimi HendrixがStratocasterをpsychedelic rockを代表するvisual / sonic symbolの一つへ変えた。
このprogressionはinstrument historyがdesignerで終われない理由を示す。Leo Fenderがproductを作り、successive musiciansがmeaningを書き換えた。1960年代末までにStratはfeedback、fuzz、stage spectacle、そしてguitarがamplified stringsをはるかに越えるsoundを作れるtoolだというideaと分離できなくなっていた。instrumentそのもののphysical shapeはrecognisableなままでも、それを使う人々の周囲でcultural identityは何度も変化した。
The Beatlesはguitarのcultural volumeを上げる
British Invasionは別の形のamplificationを生んだ。televisionがguitarとbassを巨大なaudienceの前へ置き、brandとshapeはほとんど一夜でyouth cultureの一部になった。Rickenbacker、Gretsch、Höfner instrumentsはThe Beatlesとvisualに結び付き、若いviewerはself-contained guitar groupを完全なsocial / musical identityとして見るようになった。
ここでPlay It LoudはAndy BabiukのBeatles Gearと自然につながる。Babiukはobject levelでinstrumentをidentifyし、Tolinskiとdi Pernaは何百万人ものteenagerが突然そのobjectをmodernityの象徴とみなした時に文化上何が起こるかを説明する。gear sales、television、image、musicが一つのsystemになる。bandは正式なmarketing relationshipから始まらなくてもdemandとbrand meaningを変えられる。
Dylanがelectricになり、guitarが突然politicsを持っているように見える
Bob Dylanの1965年のelectric performanceが並外れたsymbolic weightを持ったのは、amplificationがすでに文化的意味を蓄積していたからだ。acoustic folkはseriousness、political tradition、authenticityを意味し得て、electric guitarはcommercial popやrockを意味し得た。それらのassociationはinstrumentそのものに内在したものではなくconstructedだったが、Dylanのswitchがtechnicalよりideologicalに見えるほど強かった。
だからNewportは本書のargumentに有用である。guitar model自体にpolitically radical / conservativeな性質はないが、audienceはtechnologyへvalueを投影し、「間違ったinstrumentに触れること」自体をstatementにできる。Play It Loudが最も強いのは、design historyがこのようにcultural historyへ開くときだ。objectが重要なのは、人々がそれを何かのsymbolだと決めたからである。
Hendrixはelectric chain全体をinstrumentへ変える
Jimi Hendrixのところで"electric guitar"というphraseは、より文字通りradicalな意味を持つようになる。feedback、fuzz、wah、high-volume amplification、controlled noise、studio layeringによってexpressive systemはwooden instrumentそのものを大きく越える。guitar、pickups、cable、effects、amplifier、speaker、room、playerのhandsがすべてsoundへ参加する。
RetroForgeにとってこれは本書でも特に重要なconceptual lessonである。有名toneをmodel nameだけへ還元してはいけない。同じStratocasterでもsetupが違えば、同じmusical systemではない。Hendrixは完全なelectrical chainをcompositionとperformanceの一部にし、その後のguitar cultureは本当の意味で元には戻らなかった。instrumentはecosystemになった。
Japanese manufacturingが重心を変える
1970s / 1980sになるとJapanese manufacturersがguitar marketを作り替え始めた。Western marketの一部で当初copyとして軽視されたinstrumentはdramaticallyにqualityを高め、companyはoriginal designを発展させ、industryは本当にinternationalになった。Ibanez、Yamahaほかのmanufacturerはlater playerとtechnical developmentに不可欠になった。
これは重要である。electric-guitar mythologyはCalifornia、Nashville、Fender、Gibsonの周囲を回り、rest of worldはただ追随したかのように、ひどくAmerican-centricになり得るからだ。Tolinskiとdi Pernaの広いchronologyはそのfreezeを防ぐ。manufacturing knowledgeは移動し、competitionは広がり、userはcompanyをnew designへ押し続ける。electric guitarがglobalになったのはAmerican instrumentがexportされたからだけではなく、manufacturing innovationそのものが別地域でも発達したからだ。
Eddie Van Halenはmusicianをproduct-development departmentにする
Eddie Van Halenはpersonal musical problemを解決するためにinstrumentを改造し、別のmajor shiftを作る。有名なFrankenstratは異なるtraditionと結び付くelementを組み合わせ、guitarをfinished productではなくplatformのように扱った。humbucker power、Fender-style body、custom wiring、hardware choicesがdo-it-yourself design languageの一部になり、later manufacturerもそれを吸収した。
このpatternが重要なのは、innovationがuser behaviourから上方向へ移動することを示すからだ。musicianがtoolをhackし、companyが観察し、modified practiceがcommercial specificationになる。electric-guitar historyはmanufacturerがplayerへ「必要なもの」を教えるsequenceではない。player自身が何が次に存在すべきかをmanufacturerへ何度も教えている。
Metropolitan Museumとのconnectionがdesign argumentを明文化する
Penguin Random HouseはPlay It LoudをMetropolitan Museum of Artの同名exhibitionへinspirationを与えたものとして説明している。このconnectionは本書のargumentに完全に合っている。guitarはsilentでもhistorical meaningを持てるvisual-design objectである。shape、finish、branding、wear、有名ownershipだけでもstoryを語れる。
museum contextはRetroForgeのbroader editorial instinctも裏付ける。instrument pageはspecification sheetの外側にあるcultural historyへ属する。guitarはengineering、sculpture、commodity、musical toolで同時にあり得る。Play It Loudはこのideaへの最も明快なbroad introductionの一つである。
特に優れている点
最大の長所はscaleである。著者たちはexperienced guitar journalistsで、design / technologyがmuseum labelにならないだけのenthusiasmを持って書き、landmark-instrument structureは一世紀のmaterialがendless catalogueへ溶けることを防ぐ。technology、race、youth culture、marketing、有名playerがすべて見えたままで、Carlos Santanaのforewordも、guitarをhardwareではなくexpressive voiceとして扱う本に合っている。

注意点
breadthがある以上、specialistはより深いmanufacturer historyや、有名designer / playerの背後に消えやすいengineer、factory workerへさらにattentionを求めるだろう。American electric-guitar historyがnarrativeの大部分を占め、acoustic guitarはほぼscope外である。2016年以降のdevelopmentも当然含まれない。
famous-player structureはinnovationを、actual manufacturing history以上にcelebrity-drivenに見せることもある。それは本書のusefulnessを否定する理由ではなく、supplementする理由である。electric guitarをcultural technologyとして理解する最初のmapとしては、このscaleこそ有効性の源になっている。

electric-guitar historyの棚を作り始める人には優れたgatewayである。newcomerをorientできるだけ広く、familiar designがなぜfamiliarになったのか考えたことのないexperienced playerにも十分にlivelyだ。Fender/Les Paulを深く追うならThe Birth of Loudを組み合わせ、その後の問いがspecific bandなのかinstrumentのより広いemotional lifeなのかに応じてBeatles Gear、Rolling Stones Gear、Guitar: An American Lifeへ進める。

Doubledayは2016年10月にfirst editionを刊行。Penguin Random Houseはebookを400 pagesとして掲載し、Smithsonianはphysical copyをxvi + 379 pagesとしてcatalogueしている。Anchor paperbackは2017年に続いた。

2017 paperbackが最も便利なreading editionであることが多く、2016 hardbackは魅力的なcollector/browsing copyである。
