꿈은 매우 수익성 높은 corporation으로 변한다
Barney Hoskyns의 Hotel California는 counterculture가 자신이 얼마나 많은 돈을 벌 수 있는지 알게 되던 시기의 Los Angeles music history다. 등장인물은 거의 민망할 정도로 유명하다. David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Eagles, David Geffen이 musician, manager, producer, lover, label figure가 얽힌 거대한 network를 통과한다. 하지만 Hoskyns는 단순히 celebrity anecdote를 배열하지 않는다. 진짜 주제는 transformation이다. 1960년대 말의 communal하고 folk-influenced한 Southern California scene은 1970년대의 polished singer-songwriter와 country-rock industry로 바뀐다. acoustic intimacy는 arena로 이동하고, friendship은 professional network가 되며, idealism은 cocaine, wealth, management power, enormous record sales와 공존한다. Eagles의 Hotel California는 이 transformation이 만든 정신 상태를 literal location보다 더 잘 상징하는 완벽한 endpoint가 된다.
Summer of Love 이후의 Los Angeles
San Francisco가 1967 counterculture의 대중적 이미지를 지배하지만, Los Angeles는 다른 조건에서 발전했다. 이 도시는 이미 Sunset Strip, major recording studio, established label, film·television industry, session musician, commercial entertainment와 훨씬 가까운 관계를 갖고 있었다. singer-songwriter era가 완전히 등장하기 전부터 The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Love, Mamas & the Papas를 통해 folk-rock는 번성했다. 1960년대 말이 되자 Laurel Canyon과 주변 neighbourhood는 새로운 writer·performer network와 연결되었지만, Hoskyns는 이들이 하나의 uniform sound를 만든 것으로 보지 않는다. Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Jackson Browne 등을 연결한 것은 proximity, friendship, collaboration, 그리고 personal songwriting을 점점 더 적극적으로 marketing하려는 industry였다. 따라서 commerce에서 물러난 듯한 이미지는 세계에서 가장 정교한 entertainment business 중심지에서 불과 몇 분 떨어진 곳에서 형성됐다.
Troubadour는 하나의 room이 infrastructure가 될 수 있음을 보여 준다
West Hollywood의 Troubadour는 scene이 반복적인 social exchange를 통해 형성되는 방식을 보여 주기 때문에 이 책의 핵심 장소 중 하나다. club은 performance만 host하지 않는다. songwriter는 서로의 곡을 듣고, manager는 artist를 발견하고, musician은 collaborator를 만나고, relationship이 시작되며, label은 더 넓은 public에 알려지기 전에 무엇이 일어나고 있는지 정보를 얻는다. 그래서 venue는 record company가 아니어도 music-industry infrastructure의 일부가 된다. RetroForge에서는 이것이 venue history가 famous concert보다 더 중요한 이유를 설명하는 특히 유용한 역사적 model이다. 같은 공간을 누가 반복적으로 점유하느냐에 따라 career가 형성될 수 있고, Troubadour 주변에서 생긴 network는 loose Southern California scene을 professional ecosystem으로 바꾸는 데 기여한다.
CSN&Y는 supergroup 문제를 드러낸다
Crosby, Stills & Nash는 처음에는 scene의 communal promise를 구현하는 것처럼 보였다. 세 명의 강한 writer가 distinct voice를 결합하여 commercial scale이 거대해져도 intimate하게 들릴 수 있는 music을 만들었다. Neil Young의 참여는 음악적 가능성을 넓히는 동시에 interpersonal structure를 더 불안정하게 만들었다. "supergroup"이라는 단어 자체에 문제의 상당 부분이 들어 있다. musician은 이미 reputation, ambition, artistic identity를 갖고 들어오기 때문에 누구도 자연스럽게 junior partner 역할을 맡기 어렵다. Hoskyns는 CSN&Y 주변 관계를 이용해 huge audience와 large sum of money가 들어오는 순간 friendship, ego, creativity, business를 거의 분리할 수 없게 되는 방식을 보여 준다. tension은 단순한 gossip이 아니다. participant가 동시에 valuable commercial property가 되었을 때 informal collaboration의 이상이 어떻게 변하는지 보여 준다.
Joni Mitchell은 singer-songwriter category가 단순화가 아니라 확장도 가능했음을 보여 준다
singer-songwriter의 부상은 흔히 psychedelia의 excess 이후 더 작고 intimate한 music으로 이동한 이야기로 설명되지만, Joni Mitchell은 이를 복잡하게 만든다. 그녀의 writing, alternate tunings, harmonic language는 홀로 acoustic guitar를 들고 고백하는 performer라는 단순한 이미지를 계속 넘어선다. Hoskyns는 personal songwriting이 점점 더 marketable해지는 scene의 중심에 그녀를 두지만, 가장 강한 artist는 자신들 주변에 생긴 category로 축소되는 것을 거부한다. 이 긴장은 중요하다. 1970s singer-songwriter boom은 artistic development이면서 동시에 industry formation이었기 때문이다. label은 intimacy를 판매하는 법을 배웠고, musician은 package 안에서 music language를 계속 바꿨다. 두 과정을 함께 다루는 역사가 hillside house에서 만들어진 섬세한 record 목록보다 훨씬 유용하다.
David Geffen과 Asylum은 business를 보이게 만든다
David Geffen과 Asylum Records의 부상은 manager, publisher, label structure가 순수했던 scene을 나중에 상업화하기 위해 밖에서 들어온 힘이 아니었음을 보여 준다. 이들은 처음부터 network 안에 있었고 어떤 artist가 resource, visibility, leverage를 얻는지 결정하는 데 관여했다. Hoskyns는 intimate song과 sophisticated business strategy가 서로를 무효화하지 않고 같은 환경 안에 존재하는 모습을 보여 줄 때 가장 강하다. record는 confessional하고 private하게 들리면서도 highly professional management, expensive recording, carefully constructed release campaign에 의존할 수 있다. 이 모순은 Los Angeles만의 위선이 아니다. popular music이 작동하는 방식의 일부이며, Hotel California는 그 machinery를 유난히 선명하게 드러낸다.
Eagles는 regional culture를 global product로 바꾼다
Eagles는 Linda Ronstadt, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, country-rock musician, professional management가 얽힌 동일한 interconnected world에서 등장한다. 1970년대 중반이 되면 Southern California sound는 arena를 채울 수 있는 international commodity가 되었고, 1976년의 Hotel California는 Hoskyns에게 거의 지나치게 완벽한 symbolic destination을 제공한다. polished production, enormous sales, darker thematic undertow는 scene이 자신이 만든 세계를 되돌아보는 것으로 읽을 수 있다. 그러나 이 symbolism이 모든 earlier period는 순수했고 later period는 부패했다는 verdict로 변해서는 안 된다. band의 commercial dominance가 규모의 변화를 표시하는 것은 분명하지만 commercial skill과 artistic value는 상호 배타적이지 않으며, earlier scene 역시 ambition, competition, power에서 자유롭지 않았다.
fallen-Eden 이야기는 저항해서 읽을 필요가 있다
바로 이 지점에서 Hoskyns의 framing은 독자가 반론을 제기해야 하기 때문에 오히려 더 흥미로워진다. rock history는 아름다운 scene이 순수하게 시작해 money와 cocaine을 발견하고 영혼을 잃는 이야기를 좋아한다. 현실은 그렇게 편리하지 않다. commercial success는 ambitious record에 자금을 제공할 수 있고, early counterculture에도 이미 ego, exploitation, professional calculation이 존재했으며, later polished production이 돈 이전의 rougher work보다 자동으로 inferior한 것도 아니다. Hoskyns는 이런 복잡성을 상당 부분 이해하지만, title과 chronological structure는 자연스럽게 fall-from-paradise reading을 유도한다. RetroForge는 따라서 이 shape를 objective law of cultural development가 아니라 책의 argument로 제시해야 한다. tension이 보이는 상태로 남을 때 역사가 더 강해진다.
특히 뛰어난 점
industry와 social network가 책의 defining strength다. song, romance, house, venue, manager, label이 겹치면서 독자는 Los Angeles scene이 community이면서 business로 작동하는 모습을 볼 수 있다. Hoskyns는 대략 1967~1976년을 잇는 clear chronological arc도 제공하여 각 artist가 동일하게 경험했다고 주장하지 않으면서 transformation을 쉽게 따라가게 한다. music critic으로서의 background 덕분에 business와 relationship이 dominant해져도 record가 서사 안에 남는다. 마지막으로 huge cast는 RetroForge internal linking에 매우 유용하다. 거의 모든 주요 thread가 또 다른 artist, venue, label, genre history로 뻗어 나가기 때문이다.
한계
cast가 방대해 일부 인물은 full portrait가 아니라 sketch 수준으로 다뤄질 수밖에 없고, 당시 review 역시 figure 수가 각자에게 할애할 수 있는 depth를 넘어설 수 있다고 지적했다. rise-and-fall structure는 earlier canyon의 innocence와 later industry의 corruption을 과장할 수도 있다. physical geography와 Laurel Canyon의 social life 자체에 더 관심 있는 독자는 Michael Walker를 선호할 수 있고, heavily illustrated oral-history experience를 원하는 독자는 Harvey Kubernik으로 가는 편이 낫다. Hotel California는 특정 lens를 분명히 이해할 때 가장 강하다. 하나의 scene이 powerful professional network로 변하는 이야기이지, 그곳을 지나간 모든 musician의 definitive biography는 아니다.
이 책은 누구에게 적합한가?
late-1960s folk-rock에서 1970s singer-songwriter·country-rock culture로 이어지는 transition에 매력을 느끼는 독자라면 이 shelf의 중심적인 책 중 하나로 볼 수 있다. 특히 music business를 artist mythology 뒤에 숨기지 않고 보고 싶은 독자에게 가치가 크다. manager, label, professional relationship이 causal story 안에 남아 있기 때문이다. Michael Walker의 Laurel Canyon, Harvey Kubernik의 Canyon of Dreams와 함께 읽으면 동일한 Southern California world가 industry, place, visual/oral memory라는 세 개의 다른 lens를 통해 나타난다.
