Monkeesは初の長編映画で、自分たちが有名になった理由そのものを攻撃する
普通のpop-group filmは商品を守る。メンバーのpersonalityを分かりやすく紹介し、魅力的なsong performanceを配置し、comic obstacleを乗り越え、credits前には観客がrecogniseできる状態のstarへ戻す。Bob RafelsonのHeadは、その契約全体を壊す対象として扱う。
Criterionは本作をMonkeesのbig-screen careerの華やかな始まりであり不名誉な終わりでもあった作品として扱い、AFIはNew York premiereを1968年11月6日、上映時間を86分と記録する。Criterionのrestored editionは85分。Rafelsonにとってfeature-directing debutであり、Jack NicholsonはNew Hollywoodのcentral actorsの一人になるyears beforeに脚本／共同producerを務めている。
MonkeesはRafelsonとBert Schneiderによってtelevision向けに作られた。しかしMicky Dolenz、Davy Jones、Michael Nesmith、Peter Torkはその後real recording／touring groupになりながら、「manufactured」だという非難にも閉じ込められた。Headはその非難へpoliteに反論しない。むしろそれをfilmのarchitectureに変え、「productが自分の箱を嫌うほどself-awareになったら何が起こるか」を問う。
television showが終わったのでmovieはstudio内部からtelevisionを壊す
AFIはHeadが2 seasons後のThe Monkees television series cancellationに続く作品だと記す。このtimingがcentral。groupのoriginal imageを作ったmachineryがalready collapseし始めた後にfilmが現れたからだ。
safeなproductionならcinemaを使ってtelevision formulaをpreserveできた。Rafelson/Nicholsonは逆をする。
opening leapはcharactersがliteralにpicture外へ飛び出してもescape不可能かもしれないと宣言する
filmはMicky Dolenzがpublic ceremonyをrun throughしGolden Gate Bridgeから飛び降りるところで始まる。television bandへexpectedされたharmless comedyをimmediately rejectする。
"Porpoise Song"はGoffinとKingがtelevision brandの葬送曲を書いたように響く
Gerry Goffin／Carole Kingの"Porpoise Song"はsoundtrack most distinctive piecesの一つ。
grand、melancholy psychedelic scaleを持ち、Monkeesへstill attachedしていたcheerful television imageからfar removed。
"Circle Sky"がlive performanceを「manufactured-image argumentが不可能だとしたこと」の証拠へ変える
Criterionも"Circle Sky" sequenceをfilm most powerful momentsの一つとして取り上げる。Michael Nesmithのsongはgroup television reputationとsharp contrastするaggressionでperformされる。
Vietnam War imageryがpop absurdityはhistory outsideにexistできないと壊す
AFIはfilmがVietnam War atrocitiesとconnectedするfootageをuseしていると記録する。
movieでもmost jarringな部分。Monkees career problemsとはfar beyond consequencesを持つimagesでentertainmentをinterruptするから。
Jack Nicholson脚本が重要なのはsellし方が誰にも分からないpop projectからNew Hollywoodがarrivalしているから
Rafelson、Nicholson、Schneiderはsoon BBS ProductionsやEasy Rider、Five Easy Pieces周辺のchanging American film cultureとassociatedする。
cameo群がpopular cultureをdiscarded iconをanother sceneへ引き出せるwarehouseのように見せる
Victor Matureは"The Big Victor"としてappear。Annette Funicelloはolder pop-cinema worldからenter。boxer Sonny Liston、Frank Zappaほかもstable fictional universe justificationなしにfilmをmove throughする。
black-box imageryがthesisを直接言いすぎるほど言うのでsubtlety不要になる
