Why this album matters
Obscured by Clouds captures Pink Floyd between extended experimental forms and the concentrated album architecture of The Dark Side of the Moon. Written for Barbet Schroeder's film La Vallée, it returns to shorter, self-contained pieces after Atom Heart Mother and Echoes.
The soundtrack commission imposed speed: the band recorded over two weeks near Paris while Dark Side was already developing in performance. That compressed process gives the record directness without making it minor. Instrumentals, rock songs and reflective pieces reveal a band testing concise forms.

Historical and recording context
Schroeder approached Pink Floyd after their earlier work on More. La Vallée used the music sparingly, sometimes through sources such as radios inside the film. Mudmen and Stay did not appear in the soundtrack.
Pink Floyd released the album in June 1972. It reached number 6 in the UK and charted for fourteen weeks. The official archive places it immediately before The Dark Side of the Moon.

What to listen for
The sound
The opening instrumentals use synthesiser, percussion and guitar to establish terrain before conventional song form arrives. Elsewhere, acoustic guitar and close vocals give the album an unusually plain surface.
Because the tracks are short, colour changes happen quickly. Mudmen can function as an instrumental reflection of Burning Bridges, while Absolutely Curtains abandons rock-song closure for environmental sound.
