A documentary about modular synthesizers inevitably becomes a documentary about people who enjoy making simple things difficult
The modular synthesizer is one of electronic music's most seductive contradictions. It can generate sounds unavailable from almost any conventional instrument, but reaching those sounds may require patch cables, multiple modules, control voltages, tuning decisions and an acceptance that yesterday's perfect patch can be difficult to reproduce tomorrow. Waveshaper Media describes I Dream of Wires as a documentary about the rise, fall and rebirth of the modular synthesizer, featuring more than one hundred inventors, musicians and enthusiasts. The standard feature runs 96 minutes, while an approximately four-hour Hardcore Edition was released independently in 2013 before the shorter theatrical feature premiered at Moogfest in April 2014. The existence of the Hardcore Edition is almost too appropriate. A documentary about people who reject convenience in favour of deeper technical involvement developed a version more than twice as long for viewers who considered ninety-six minutes insufficiently obsessive. That is not merely a joke about synthesizer culture. It is the film's subject.
Moog and Buchla provide parallel beginnings that prevent one inventor from becoming the entire creation myth
The historical opening places Robert Moog and Don Buchla at the centre of early modular synthesis in the United States. Their systems developed independently through different musical communities and design assumptions.

Software can offer thousands of parameters behind one screen. Modular hardware gives each function physical presence. A cable creates an obvious relationship. A knob moves only one or a few parameters. Building a patch requires decisions that can encourage musical commitment. Vintage systems were expensive and scarce. New manufacturers began creating modules for modern users, including the Eurorack format associated strongly with Doepfer. Once a common mechanical/power format exists, independent builders can produce modules that users combine across companies. The instrument stops being one manufacturer's closed system. Modular synthesis survives because it turns the studio into an instrument that cannot be completed

Another module can always be added. A signal can be rerouted. A sequencer can control something previously controlled by hand. One manufacturer's idea can interact with another's.
