Twenty-seven minutes are enough to explain why a small London electronics company could sound larger than an industry

What the Future Sounded Like has the shortest runtime of any Screening Room entry so far. Screen Australia catalogues Matthew Bate's 2007 film at 28 minutes, while Closer Productions gives 27. The subject could easily support a feature several times longer: Electronic Music Studios, usually shortened to EMS, and the people who helped turn experimental electronic technology into instruments used by Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Brian Eno and countless later musicians. The short format works because Bate chooses one clear story.

Electronic sound had often required institutional studios, expensive equipment and specialist knowledge. EMS developed compact instruments such as the VCS 3 that made sophisticated voltage-controlled synthesis available in a form adventurous musicians could place in studios and, with sufficient courage, carry toward stages.

"Affordable" remains relative. A VCS 3 was not a cheap consumer keyboard. Compared with large electronic laboratories and some rival modular systems, it changed the scale of access. That change was enough to alter British electronic music.

Tristram Cary gives EMS a history beginning in composition rather than product development

Tristram Cary had worked with electronic sound long before synthesizers became normal commercial instruments. David Cockerell turns experimental requirements into circuits musicians can carry

Engineer David Cockerell is one of the central figures because design ideas become culturally significant only when they can be made reliable enough to leave the prototype environment. His work on EMS instruments translated electronic-music concepts into compact hardware whose matrix patching system became visually and functionally distinctive. Instead of a wall of patch cords connecting every module, the VCS 3 uses a pin matrix to route signals. This saves space and changes the instrument's physical logic. A player can make complex connections on a compact panel, although the matrix itself introduces quirks and the instrument's tuning behaviour can challenge anyone expecting a conventional performance synthesizer. Those imperfections became part of the machine's identity. The VCS 3 is famous not because it behaves like a perfect keyboard instrument. It is famous because it encourages sounds a perfect keyboard might never suggest.

The VCS 3 makes the word "portable" mean something radically different from modern portable electronics

Launched around 1969, the VCS 3 placed oscillators, filter, envelope/shaper, ring modulation, noise and routing into a wooden cabinet small enough to move far more easily than large modular systems. The instrument's form immediately distinguishes it from the Moog wall. This physical difference encourages a different relationship with users. A VCS 3 can become part of an existing studio rather than requiring the studio to be built around it. Pink Floyd's relationship with EMS technology is one of the documentary's most recognisable bridges. The band used electronic equipment within an experimental studio practice already interested in tape, signal processing and nonstandard sound. This is crucial because later synthesizer imagery often centres on a keyboardist playing a lead line. EMS instruments could be used far more broadly.

Oscillators become texture. Filters and modulation alter signals. Sequencing and effects become part of arrangement. Bands such as Hawkwind embraced instability because atmosphere mattered more than perfect repeatability. The machine becomes a generator of event rather than a preset provider. This attitude anticipates later electronic and noise performance where the unpredictability of hardware becomes part of the appeal.

Brian Eno demonstrates how the non-musician idea depended on instruments whose interfaces were open enough to reward curiosity

Brian Eno's early Roxy Music role is one of the most culturally important examples of electronic instruments changing who can participate in a rock band. Eno famously developed a public identity around being a "non-musician," although the phrase can obscure the depth of his listening, technical curiosity and later production skill. EMS technology suited this approach. A synthesizer could process signals, create textures and alter the band's sonic environment without requiring the performer to behave like a traditional keyboard virtuoso. This is the opposite of the Emerson/Wakeman progressive-rock model even when some hardware histories overlap. The synthesizer becomes a way to escape instrumental hierarchy. Roxy Music's visual and musical identity benefits because Eno can occupy a role not already defined by guitar, bass, drums or conventional keyboards. The future sounds strange partly because the job title is new.

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop belongs beside EMS even when institutional electronic music has a different history

The film's broader framing connects British electronic innovation to television and science-fiction sound, including Doctor Who and the culture surrounding the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This relationship deserves precision.

The Radiophonic Workshop developed electronic sound through tape, oscillators and custom techniques before commercial synthesizers became widespread. Delia Derbyshire's realisation of Ron Grainer's Doctor Who theme is one of the most famous examples. EMS instruments later entered a world that this institutional experimentation had helped make culturally legible. The connection is therefore historical rather than simply product-based. A television audience had already learned that electronic sound meant other worlds. Companies such as EMS gave musicians more direct access to the tools capable of producing related timbres. The future had been heard before it could be bought.

EMS continued reducing the physical footprint through instruments such as the Synthi A and Synthi AKS. The suitcase format becomes iconic because it makes an electronic studio look almost deceptively portable. A composer no longer needs a dedicated room full of fixed equipment, while a touring musician can carry a sophisticated system and a studio can add electronic processing without redesigning its entire infrastructure. Again, reliability and tuning remain complicated. Portable does not mean effortless. The importance lies in changing the logistical threshold. Electronic experimentation can travel.

EMS's later commercial difficulties demonstrate that historical importance does not guarantee a stable company

Inventive companies often produce technologies whose influence greatly exceeds their business durability. EMS belongs to this pattern. Specialist design, small production scale and a rapidly changing synthesizer market made long-term commercial stability difficult even as the instruments became legendary. Competitors developed more performance-oriented keyboards, integrated synths became normal and later digital technology changed expectations again. The VCS 3's influence survives precisely because later musicians keep rediscovering what the market once considered inconvenient. This is similar to the Mellotron story. A machine can lose commercially because the industry solves its practical problems. It can return culturally because those practical problems contributed to the sound people miss.

Australia enters the history through Don Banks and Keith Humble, reminding viewers that electronic-instrument development was internationally connected

Australian electronic-music history provides one of the film's less obvious routes. Screen Australia and later research around the documentary connect composer Don Banks and Keith Humble with ideas feeding into early EMS development. This is valuable because synthesizer history can become overly concentrated on New York, California, London and Germany. Composers moved internationally, exchanged technical ideas and carried electronic-music problems between institutions. The VCS story therefore belongs to a wider network than one London company. It also means viewers should not treat it as a complete technical history. Moog, Buchla, the Radiophonic Workshop, EMS's internal business history and later synthesizer developments require other sources. This is not a weakness if the Screening Room presents the work honestly. A short documentary can be the perfect gateway. The problem begins only when a gateway is mistaken for the entire building.

The film's title becomes more accurate with every decade that follows

The phrase What the Future Sounded Like contains an intentional paradox. The future in the film is already historical by 2007. VCS 3 oscillators, patch matrices and early sequencers once represented radical novelty. Later generations hear them as vintage sound. This shift is one of electronic music's recurring cycles. A technology arrives as futurism, becomes ordinary, becomes obsolete and then returns as character. EMS instruments completed that cycle early enough for the documentary to watch the future become nostalgia. The sound survives because musicians keep discovering new futures inside it.
